Development Update

[h3]Hi everyone! Right now we’re actively working on level design and environment, therefore in this update we’d like to tell you about interesting finds you can come across in the world of Aarkalia.[/h3]

[h3]As we have already mentioned, the world of Aarkalia is divided into two parts, and our heroine is able to travel between the present and the future, exploring both realms. In the game, there’ll be a system of quests given by NPCs — sometimes these quests will be linked between worlds: in order to solve some of the riddles, you’ll have to change something in the present, so that it plays a role in the future.[/h3]



[h3]One of such NPCs, Ina Tsukumo, is the head of the Museum of Rare Birds of Aarkalia. She will ask you to find her lost birds.[/h3]



[h3]Also, as you explore the world, the heroine may discover strange purple gems. An unknown person nicknamed the Ambassador, who travels through the worlds, will tell the heroes about their function.[/h3]



[h3]With the help of gems, the heroine will be able to acquire blessings — special passive properties that will remain with the character, strengthening her forever. Combined with some amulets, the right blessings will significantly strengthen the character, emphasizing the specific playstyle. There are three skill trees in total: inspiration, vitality and courage, and each of the trees has nodes that enhance the character in a certain way.[/h3]



[h3]In the previous update we showed you the lost quiver. From now on, with each update, we will talk about some of the amulets that can be found in the game. Since amulets can be equipped in two types of slots, each of them will have two properties.[/h3]

Development update

First of all, thank you so much for your support. Due to some minor issues, development has slowed down a bit lately — however, we’re now happy to report that we’re making significant progress indeed, and many things related to development organization are back to normal. We hope to meet your expectations in the nearest future 🙏

[h3]While working on the alpha version, we came to the conclusion that in order to release a public demo, we need to achieve the right level of polish and amount of content in that upcoming demo, and we’ll need a little more time for that. That is why we had to postpone certain activities. At this stage, we can say with confidence that the key components of the gameplay and mechanics are already working, so we’re putting all our efforts into filling the game with content. On the one hand, we’d like to save some interesting details for the future, however, there are some things that we can show right now and even tease some small features.[/h3]


[h3]Our Discord server residents could have noticed a hint about one of the game’s bosses for quite a while now, since from the moment the server was created we had this special turtle emote.[/h3]

Play time-limited demo of There Is No Light — an upcoming dark action RPG

Hey everyone,

Hope you’re doing well! Today we’d like to present you a game our friends are working on, because they’ve just released its new demo, and we think that it deserves your attention.



We’re talking about There Is No Light — a pixel-art action-adventure set in a grim underground world ruled by the mysterious Church of the Great Hand, where the entire human population has been eradicated by a global catastrophe.

Explore the game world, listen to the stories of survivors, vanquish hordes of bloodthirsty demonic creatures and fight deadly Bosses to fulfill your goal — save your child who has been taken away by the Church.

There Is No Light takes part in the Steam Next Fest, thus there is a brand new demo version available on Steam from June 16 to June 22 — don’t forget that the demo is time-limited and it will be removed from the platform after the event, so make sure to check it out!

The new demo features all the core gameplay and three in-game locations: New Nimbus, Path Of Sorrow and Steel Forest, as well as one mini-boss and one full-fledged boss at the end.

Also, the team has recently published a teaser of a launch trailer, which will be released later this summer — you can watch it on YouTube.

[h2]✨Development updates✨[/h2]



Over the past few months, we’ve been developing the new Cherry Blossom Square location. Above all, we’ve tried to ensure balance between the charming visuals and good readability/clarity of the environment.



Personally, I’ve found the level design tasks quite exciting, yet often I had to stop myself from overloading the location with enemies and interesting findings — overall I’m pleased with the result and can’t wait to see your opinion on it.



In the nearest future, we’d like to improve the combat system by adding more variation and hit combos to it. Despite it looking quite fun, there’s a whole lot of work ahead to reach the complete smoothness of the combat system.

Devblog #1: from DeathStick to Akatori

Hello everyone!

In today's devblog #1 we’d like to share some news regarding the development and other important updates. And we do have A LOT of subjects to share and discuss here cause it's still the early development stages, so stay tuned!

First, we have an important confession to make. DeathStick wasn’t meant to be the game’s name initially. We simply hadn’t time and resources back in October to come up with a real one. So with a little delay, we finally created a real and final title for the project – Akatori.



A short introduction to the meaning behind Akatori: it consists of two Japanese words: 赤い “Akai” – red and 鳥 “Tori” – bird. It refers to a red canary the main character meets at the game’s start, which transforms into a staff and becomes her weapon after that.



This title is shorter and quite memorable, or at least we hope so. Thumb up if you like Akatori more than DeathStick :') (We'd be really happy to receive any feedback from you on this topic).

To other important updates:
The first in-game location – “Azure Roots Garden” is almost complete. We’re already working on the other locations that were shown in the teaser – “Metropolis” and “Haunted Ruins”. A preview of other gorgeous locations will be shown within the following updates.



Besides the main content, a significant part of the in-game UI is complete, which was the hardest part of the development so far (who would have thought lol). Here is the most recent part – the save slots menu:
