Q&A

Hello Players! 👋

Welcome to the first devlog after the release of El Dorado: The Golden City Builder Prologue. We’re very impressed by how many of you decided to give the Prologue version a try as well as with the warm welcome we’ve received. ❤️‍ The amount of feedback you gave us and all the questions you’ve asked showing your genuine interest were very encouraging and today, instead of a normal devlog, we’d like to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the game.
1. In which historical period does the El Dorado: The Golden City Builder take place? 📅
The gameplay in our game takes place at the brink of the classical period- over 600 years before conquistadors discovered these lands.
2. Why is there no money as an in-game resource? 💰
Ancient Mayan did not have any need for money. Most commonly, the goods were being exchanged in a barter trade. The best example of something that replaced money for them were cacao seeds or valuable ores. There was no universal currency that would be honored in all the Mayan cities. This is the reason why in the game, the city does not get richer in money but in people.
3. Why are the slaves painted in blue? 🔵
Slaves in the game are more than often used as sacrifices. According to texts dating back to the XVI century, blue was a color reserved for sacrifices for gods. To stress that the slaves are property of gods they were painted blue. If you’d like to read more about the meaning of blue dye in the Ancient Mayan culture we’re giving you a link to a fascinating article covering this topic! 🤩
4. What are the cenotes? 💦
Cenotes are natural karst wells filled with drinking water. Mayan people paid special attention to those natural formations not just because of the drinking water. They believed, those are the gates to the realm of gods. That’s why many settlements were placed nearby them.
5. Why are there so many trees on the map? 🌳
The game takes place on an Ancient Yucatan Peninsula, an area densely overgrown with humid equatorial forests. While creating your cities and braving the wilds you’ll get to feel like the Ancient Mayan and each house, farm field or temple will be a silent proof of the struggle your people put against those ancient forests.

That’s it for today. Hopefully now you know more about the background of the game and armed with this new knowledge you’ll enjoy the gameplay more! 👍 As always, we’d like to invite you to join our discord and add the game to your wishlists on Steam to not miss out on any further updates!

Ancient city builder El Dorado has a free prologue, with some angry gods to appease

Basically the only sort of strategy games I like are city builders, so I was interested in the playtest for El Dorado: The Golden City Builder, which casts you as the leader of an ancient Mayan-ish city. The playtest is only the prologue, but the eventual goal is to take over the Yucatán peninsula, and if nothing else it's refreshing to see a city-builder that doesn't feel overwhelmingly European. It also has a complicated system of religion. Whereas in a similarly polytheistic game like Zeus, the gods would turn up to stomp on buildings and/or bless them, at fairly large intervals, in El Dorado I was getting a home immolated every few days. Building shrines that have an area of effect, and that require resources to run and protect your town, is its own supply chain in El Dorado. This is a very interesting idea that I liked.

But. The aforementioned deities are figures from Maya mythology, and the Yucatán peninsula is the bit where the Mayans lived, so I just find it a bit sus the word "Mayan" does not appear anywhere on the Steam page or in the press release materials. Sometimes said materials say "the Yucatán peninsula", and sometimes "the mystical land of Jukatan", which could well be an innocent translation mistake, but doesn't make me less sus. I've hedged my bets by saying "Mayan-ish" - just as an uncharitable person could say the devs are doing...
