Server Maintenance - Wednesday, January 26, 2022

WHAT: Server Maintenance (Matchmaking Servers)
WHEN: Wednesday, January 26, 2022, @ 2:00p PT / 5:00p ET / 22:00 UTC (Countdown)
EST. DOWNTIME: 1 - 2 HOURS
GAMES & PLATFORMS IMPACTED

OBJECTIVES
• Routine server updates and maintenance.
DETAILS
This coming Wednesday, January 26th, the platform team will be taking the multiplayer servers down for regular maintenance. Please note:

  • Ranked matchmaking will disabled exactly one hour before the maintenance window to prevent disruption to newly-formed matches.

  • Any matches still in progress at the start of the maintenance window will be disrupted when it begins.

  • DURING THE MAINTENANCE WINDOW, YOU WILL STILL BE ABLE TO LAUNCH THE GAME, BUT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MATCHMAKE OR ACCESS ANY ONLINE FEATURES.

To prevent any interruptions, we recommend wrapping up any games at least 10 minutes before the maintenance window. The downtime is expected to last 1 to 2 hours. You can watch this thread with any changes to the schedule as they arise, as well as the all-clear when the maintenance is complete.

Thank you for your patience!

Age of Empires 4's next patch speeds up matchmaking, slows down scouts

The next patch for real-time strategy game Age of Empires IV will be available January 19, and it's making some small but impactful changes. In addition to a balance pass on most of the strategy game's civilizations, it's also reducing the amount of time you'll have to wait for a multiplayer game by making its matchmaking system a bit less picky.

The developers at Relic and World's Edge say they've been keeping an eye on matchmaking queue times, and they've found that the system is a bit too discriminating - it can take a few minutes before it settles on another evenly-skilled player. In the upcoming patch, the developers have sped up the time it takes for the matchmaking system to broaden its search to a wider pool of players by 67%.

Not everything is speeding up, however. Scouts across the board are going to be 35% slower while carrying animal carcasses, and the Rus' warrior monks are getting slowed by 25% whilst carrying relics. The devs say this should open up more counter-play options, and it should at least have the effect of making scouts less reliable as a source for food in the early game - they'll be vulnerable if used for this task.

Age of Empires IV — Patch 10257

Starting tomorrow, you’ll be able to download the first Age of Empires IV patch of 2022, and we thought you might appreciate an early view of the patch list ahead of the main event!

Patch 10257 focuses on balance changes and bug fixes across a variety of civilizations with the goal of addressing some of the most critical issues faced by each. As seen in the full list of patch notes below, we’re addressing player feedback related to the Mongol civilization and Fire Lancer unit feeling overpowered, as well as resolving several Delhi Sultanate bugs to ensure the civilization’s distinct mechanics shine through.

NOTE: Upon updating to this patch, you will no longer be able to utilize replays from previous updates. At times, saves will also be impacted, though we’ve taken additional steps to ensure your campaign saves are not impacted by this particular update. Skirmish saves from the previous patch are impacted and will no longer be accessible after you update.

Age of Empires 4 is having a ranked seasons test this week

After releasing back in October, Age of Empires 4 is set to receive some welcome new features this month - including a January patch with "pointed balance changes and bug fixes" and the first 1v1 ranked seasons preview test, which is due to hit later this week.

First up is the introduction of 1v1 ranked seasons competitive play, which is promised to go live later this Spring but developer Relic has revealed that the first ranked seasons beta test will begin this week - on Thursday, January 20, to be precise, which will then run for just over a week to January 28.

Only players who have signed up to be an Age of Empires Insider will get to participate in the beta, so head here to do that. Once you've filled in the form and provided the necessary information, you should receive an email that allows access to the game's beta branch. The preview will only offer 1v1 matches but it'll be a taster for the longer "structured seasons" Relic is planning to add.

UPDATE: We're incredibly excited to preview Ranked Seasons and gather your feedback! We planned to start our event on January 20th; however, our villagers need to gather a few more resources. We're targeting the week of January 24th to get started, but we'll be in touch when we have more specifics. In the meantime, we have reopened sign up - become an Age Insider for your chance to join this preview!

2021 was a huge year for World’s Edge and Relic Entertainment with the release of Age of Empires IV! As we enter a new year, we’re grateful for the opportunity to continue building experiences and learning with our Age community.

  • It’s our goal to make the game better and better over time, and January brings with it our next patch. • Last year we shared our first Age of Empires IV Roadmap, outlining some of the big beats planned for the first few months of 2022. Later this month, you’ll be able to experience one of those features for the first time – as part of our 1v1 Ranked Seasons Closed Preview.
January Patch
The upcoming January patch will focus on pointed balance changes and bug fixes across a variety of civilizations with the goal of addressing some of the most critical issues faced by each. We’re addressing a sampling of high-profile player feedback related to the Mongol civilization and Fire Lancer unit feeling overpowered, as well as resolving several Delhi Sultanate bugs to ensure the civilization’s distinct mechanics shine through.

You can tune in for a stream next week where the development team will talk in more depth on the purpose behind each change! Make sure to keep an eye on our official Age social channels for timing.

We’re excited to share the January Patch with you very soon, and even more importantly, we look forward to reading through your feedback as we continue to balance the game. As you may already know from the Age IV Community Roadmap, we have a big update planned for the spring, and we’re also looking to introduce other improvements in the short term with a patch planned for February!
1v1 Ranked Seasons Closed Beta
If there’s one thing we know, it’s that Age players are eager to demonstrate their skills in battle! This spring, we’ll be introducing 1v1 Ranked Seasons, which will allow you to compete against other players and advance through ranked divisions to receive exclusive rewards.

While ranked play has long been a component of Age games, Age of Empires IV will be the first title to introduce structured seasons and we expect this tradition to only grow. As we start out, we’ll be implementing Ranked Seasons for 1v1 matches, but we look forward to growing our offerings as we hear more of what you want!

Be one of the first to try out 1v1 Ranked Seasons and help us prepare to launch this feature by joining the Ranked Seasons Closed Preview next week from January 20th to 28th! To prepare for this, you only need to complete a few quick steps:
  1. Sign up as an Age Insider.

  2. Confirm your communication preferences.

  3. Ensure your DxDiag is uploaded (This is a good step to check even if you have a pre-existing account!).

  4. Wait to hear from us by email with access steps and instructions on how to best provide feedback and bug reports.

    • Note: We will provide you with an access key for the Age of Empires IV beta product, which will be used to download and launch this preview.

    • Note: This opportunity is best suited for players who enjoy the Ranked game mode; however, if you’re interested in trying Ranked and helping us prepare for its release, your time and effort are appreciated!
Whether you’re preparing for the patch and planning to stick to the live game or looking to join us in our first ever post-release preview, we can’t wait to hear from you!
