Dev Blog #5: Naming our game

The Hexadome: Aristeia Showdown is our first game, the first project of our studio. We’re putting so much love into it, so much care, that it gets very easy to get stuck in analysis paralysis where you ponder the pros and cons of everything for ages.

I think we can safely say that the process of naming our game took us longer than the process of rebooting the game’s gameplay. I’ve stopped counting the discussions, heated debates, brainstorming sessions. We went through many stages to name the game. Here are a few of them:
Stage 1: Be happy and feel like you have everything figured out.
Our video game being inspired by an existing license, Aristeia, and based in the Infinity Universe, we figured that keeping its original name would do the trick. We don’t need to think about it, we have other things to focus on, let’s move on!
Stage 2: Realize that it’s not going to do the trick after all.
Branding wise, it didn’t make sense to name it the same as the game it’s inspired by. Or did it? The team was split in two:
 • The ones who felt like simply naming the game “Aristeia” would be a nice homage, it’s also catchy, unique, and as a bonus, starting with the letter “A” puts you on top of lists.
 • The ones who felt like it could be misleading to players who would find two games under the same name, negatively impacting the referencing on search engines.
Stage 3: Define what you want.
We wanted it to be short and memorable, – yes, yes, we know, our game name is long, more about that later, keep reading – a name that you can easily remember, pronounce, spell. We soon realized that unfortunately, many anglophone people we spoke to had trouble pronouncing “Aristeia”, let alone spelling it. But we liked that name! What should we do?
Stage 4: Brainstorm. And when we’re done, brainstorm some more.
So many ideas, so many names pitched, so many vetoes. We wanted our game name to have everything:
 • A catchy name that makes it clear that it’s a turn-based tactics game.
 • A name that sounds like an epic show.
 • A name that is unique yet easy to remember.

We had a list of about a hundred names, and we were stuck with it for months. Our teaser reveal date was approaching fast and still no decision was made. We realized that by trying to be catchy and original, we might have overthought the whole game name thing, and that the answer might be right in front of us.

In our universe, the Hexadome is where the action takes place. It feels grandiose, it feels important, it’s THE place to be if you want to see your favorite champions engage in epic combats. It’s easy to pronounce and it works in many languages. It has the “Hex”, typical of tactical games. It as the “Dome”, hinting at where the action is going to take place. The domain names are available. No other game is named like that.

We decided to add a subtitle even though it goes against the “make it short” rule, because we wanted to add a clear link between our game and the license it’s based on, without making it the main focus. And there you have it – The Hexadome: Aristeia Showdown was born.

In the end, we know that players will rename the game the way they like it best, and as a matter of fact, our community already simply calls it “Hexadome”, which we love. We wish good luck to all game devs struggling with naming their game, and we to all turn-based tactics game fans, we say: see you in The Hexadome!

Dev Blog #4: Pleasing sponsors to win big!

A show that has tens of billions of viewers is a show that attracts the attention of money makers. Today we'll be talking about the sponsor mechanic!

We're 175 years in the future, planets across the galaxy have been colonized by Humanity, now called the Human Sphere, and a whole set of interstellar nations are playing a power game over who has control over what. Meanwhile, The Hexadome: Aristeia Showdown is the most watched show in the entire Human Sphere. Naturally, who says show says audience, and who says audience says advertisements. Sponsors play a major role in our world. Some sponsors are closely tied to nations, which have everything to gain from putting their champions at the forefront to promote their interests, whether political or financial. And our champions return the favor by providing sponsors with great visibility during the matches.

The Hexadome attracts all kinds of sponsors, from entertainment TV channels to arms dealers, pharmaceutical companies to interstellar tourism agencies, there is something for everyone. Each will offer you different advantages during the game to help you achieve your goals. Are you the people pleaser kind? Oxyd, the #1 TV channel, will earn you Cheers. More of a trigger-happy type? Cinetics, PanOceania's main weapons supplier, will help you eliminate your opponents. Choose wisely, victory may depend on it.

In the same way that you will choose your characters beforehand, you will choose your sponsors before entering the Hexadome. Once the sponsors have been chosen, they will need to be given visibility in the arena. They are scattered around the Hexadome in the form of advertising panels, and you will have to position yourself next to them to trigger a mini cutscene which will highlight your champion and the sponsor who invested so much money for a few precious seconds of visibility. This means that you will have to make choices: take control of scoring zones and get victory points, or seek out a sponsor to benefit from a powerful advantage? Is there a way to do both?

Like the crowd mechanic, sponsors serve as a lever to fuel the strategic depth of the game. They provide a secondary objective allowing you to explore new strategies to win, and can be used as a comeback mechanic, giving you an advantage for the next round.

With a dice system revisited to be more dynamic, the crowd and its mechanics for improving characters and their skills, and the sponsors who make you evaluate what is the best strategy to win: we promise you that each game of The Hexadome will be exciting and unique!

Dev Blog #3 – The Crowd: make them cheer or die trying!

Have you ever wondered what it would have been like if The Rock, Hulk Hogan, John Cena and Shawn Michaels had teamed up to put on an epic show for their fans? We have. (No, our game isn’t a WWE game).

In The Hexadome: Aristeia Showdown, you control four champions and have them engage in brutal fights in an arena, the Hexadome, in front of a screaming crowd. From the movie star and hero of the nation (imagine a mix between Jean-Claude Van Damme and Captain America), to the austere soldier in search for revenge, to the man who’s zest in life is to get genetically modified to look like a panda wearing flowery shorts…: Each champion is a real star, with sponsors who support them financially, and their fans who show them unlimited admiration. Touching the fans’ hearts is what drives our champions. The crowd reacts to the characters' good moves, they encourage them, and they are there to see some action!

We were looking to introduce a currency mechanic that made sense and was aligned with the game’s lore. Building something around the crowd was the obvious answer.

We have linked the crowd to “Cheers”, which is our currency in-game. Each of your actions during a match will have a direct influence on the Cheer Gauge, which will fill up or empty down depending on your choices. Regain control of a scoring zone at the last moment, annihilate an opponent in single blow, be a team player and help a downed ally… or epically fail an attack that could have changed the course of the game: everything you do will have an impact on the crowd’s Cheers.

Accumulating Cheers serves three purposes:

 1. Improve your character's statistics during a game. All attributes can be improved: you can strengthen a character's attack, increase the success rate of an action, strengthen defense, etc. The idea here is to be able to shape your team for the upcoming match and have a feeling of progression. The more we progress in the match, the more Cheers we accumulate, the more we can increase our characters’ power in a personalized way. There is no predetermined path, and each new game has the potential to be different.

 • Buy consumables. They will have a direct impact on the course of the game. They can increase characters’ statistics, but they can also allow you to perform actions that will disrupt the course of the game: immobilize all the players around you, inflict a negative status on all your opponents in the Hexadome, or on the contrary give a bonus to all your allies, etc.

Cheer Gauge and Consumables - UI is FAR from being final ;)
 • Trigger your characters' ultimate skill. By reaching the last level of the Cheer gauge, you get access to the ultimate attacks of your champions. These attacks are impressive and drastically change the course of the game, hence their high cost.

The crowd and their “Cheers” are therefore a central element of our gameplay, a real lever which fuels the tactical aspect of the game.

In our next blog, we will tell you about Sponsors and the influence they can have on the game.
