The least-popular Battlefield game is now bigger than Call of Duty on Steam

The Battlefield resurgence is well and truly in flow. The Battlefield 6 beta smashed player records as series vets and new recruits flocked to check out EA's big, shiny upcomer, and it looks like the sheen has rubbed off on series ugly duckling, Battlefield 2042. Right now, EA's futuristic shooter is currently outperforming Call of Duty on Steam. No, I'm not joking.

Battlefield was once a bastion of the FPS genre. Its gritty miltary action and great gunplay put it head and shoulders above most of the competition. However, that fortune has fallen in recent years. Battlefield 2042 in particular felt like the series' nadir, as it launched light on content and heavy on frustrations. However, the recent Battlefield 6 open beta has drawn players back in. It's more reminiscent of the classic games, a return to form of sorts. And it's even had the knock-on effect of getting folks back on board with Battlefield 2042.

The Battlefield 6 beta may be over, but 2042's just gotten a massive new update

The past couple of weekends have been an absolute dream for this Battlefield enjoyer. Between ratting my way around Siege of Cairo's narrow corridors, shotty in-hand, and snaking my way through Iberian Offensive's ravaged structures, shotty still in-hand, I've been having a blast. Yes, the maps on offer were a bit too small to properly capture the big ground warfare mamajams of Battlefields past. And yes, the netcode is a bit queasy in places, but there's a prevailing sense that EA's finally getting the series back on course after Battlefield 2042.
