Devblog#2: Goblins & Breeding

In the public demo, breeding currently isn't playable. However, there has been no shortage of questions from players as to what this will involve. Although you'll have to wait until Early Access to get your hands on breeding, here's some key information.

The average Goblin isn't much to look at. In fact, even the most remarkable Goblin still pales in comparison to the evolutionary advances of men. No matter how careful a band of Goblins are, they're going to suffer losses when battling the races of men and beast and will always need to seek replacements.

This is where Goblins have the advantage. What they lack in strength, speed, smarts, and looks, they make up for in abundance. Provided they have the right facility, Goblins can multiply with great abandon. The magic all happens in the Warrens of their Lair.

Between adventures, breeding is how you keep your roster of Goblins well stocked. While you could pick up some capable fighters at the campgrounds above the Lair, success relies on the Goblins producing their own unique warriors. Between expeditions, you may go to your Lair's Warrens to assign any two Goblins from your roster to the two breeding slots. If you have more than one Warrens, you could even breed multiple pairs. Breeding will begin once you embark on an adventure.

Upon returning from your adventure, you'll find the goblins ready to spawn. Visit the warrens to see your new Goblin spawns, along with their unique and inherited traits! Some spawns may be better than others, so be sure to keep the best of the lot. Growing up a goblin and assigning their combat class requires food. It's worth noting that breeding is an exhausting process for Goblins, and the more times a Goblin breeds, the longer it will take that specific Goblin to recover and repeat the process.

In Goblin Stone, inheriting genetic traits is simulated. When two Goblins breed, their offspring can inherit the parents' traits. However, you can never be sure which traits will be passed on. All goblins carry both dominant and recessive genes. So it can be entirely possible for two green Goblins to suddenly produce a blue one, provided it's in their genes.

And that's Goblin breeding in a nutshell. So long as you allow your best Goblins time off to breed and spawn, then your Goblin colony is sure to flourish and have better chances versus wayward adventurers.

Devblog#1: Goblins, Energy and You!

It’s a well known scientific fact that Humans are highly successful persistence hunters. With bodies built for endurance, they can keep a chase (or a fight) going for hours where other creatures would tire themselves out in minutes. This makes them powerful warriors, capable of holding out better than any beast, natural, mystical or otherwise.

The humble Goblin, however, is a scavenger and has to rely on its other merits. With light, fragile bodies optimized for scurrying into hiding and staying there, they easily tire in a fight - a tactical problem that any aspiring Goblin leader must learn to work around.

In combat, Goblins are eager to make their move, so long as they have the energy to do it. Every combat action has an associated energy cost (indicated by a gem in the upper left corner of the action card), showing how many time units it will take them to regain their stamina and make their next move.

The color of the action gem should also factor into your strategy. The color will range from Yellow to Red. Yellow energy cost indicates a standard cost and won't tire your goblins too much. More specialized abilities will cost more, typically 30 energy (orange) or 40 energy (red). Not only will they take a significant amount of time to regain their footing, but their exhaustion will make them more vulnerable to damage. Given how fragile the average Goblin already is, this can lead to devastating wounds, or even instant death.

Though goblins are comparatively safer at the back of the line, ranged or multi-target attacks from an enemy can hit goblins at the back, and these will deal with increased damage to tired or exhausted goblins. Those pushed to the very back of the time bar by especially draining abilities with a red-colored cost, will suffer terribly if an attack manages to find them.

This is one of the main problems that you’ll have to face against those invading goblin lands. Keep a close eye on the time bar at the top of the combat screen, and make sure that when powerful ranged enemies come into play that there’s no goblins exposed to attack. Sometimes it’s better to hold back and use weaker abilities, and sometimes you’ll want to go all-in to bring down a powerful target quickly.

Remember that there’s safety in numbers, and there’s more to bravery than obnoxious Human behaviour.
