Let's Build a Zoo News

Our FAVOURITE updates, with ONE WEEK TO GO!

Hey everyone!

Can you believe there's only ONE WEEK to go? We certainly can't!

I've been doing updates in our discord for a while, and I really do hope you've been enjoying them! They've been SUPER cool to write and looking back on them now, I can't believe how far the game has come! I've got to watch new buildings, conservation efforts, farms and evil plots spring to life, and it really has been magical!

I don't want to spoil anything else now, we're all so close to you discovering it for yourselves, but I figured I'd share some of my favourite features I've talked about!

Nurseries and Breeding Variants

For a little while, breeding variants in the game was a bit nebulous. You'd put two rabbits in a pen, and eventually get a brown rabbit. GREAT! Except, well, what did that even mean?

The breeding system has become one of my fast favourites, with screens in the nursery to show each breeding pair and all their possible outcomes, as well as an ultrasound upgrade to help you save time on your way to the coat colour of your dreams. This whole system became a deep rabbit hole I fell into for a long, long time, collecting up at least two of every horse in the game!

Quests and Critical choices

I'm all for a nice lengthy sandbox game, but one of my favourite things in Let's Build a Zoo is definitely the silly NPCs and their quests and choices. From Scamimals (which are incredible, and you should absolutely collect as many as possible) to collecting animals to help out a _very familiar_ video game, they're all so full of personality, regardless of your morality!

Honestly, these have changed a lot throughout development, but I'm really excited by how they encourage you to keep making your zoo bigger and better but hopefully will give you some silliness and some real dilemmas to think about throughout the game!

Lots and LOTS of visual flair

I think the original post I made here still stands in a lot of ways:

There are so, so many things I could write for this one, and I feel like I need to keep most of them a secret, as they never fail to delight me every time I see them! When we published the demo to Steam, some of the icons over visitors heads were new, as well as lots of pixel art that you've seen. Since then there have been SO MANY new additions, so many updates and so many cool extra bits of visual flair to show, teach and help make Let's Build a Zoo bright and clear all the way through your playthroughs. It's been an interesting challenge for the artists working with so many systems and making them all accessible and understandable to players, and I think they've done an AMAZING job!

My favourites though, obviously, are the animals interacting with the enrichment. 10/10 each and every time

Pollution and Utilities

A lot of work has been put into the ability to steal/create your own energy, depending on your zoo type and how your morality has been doing. It's entirely possible (and encouraged) to become self-sufficient, and I love all the pieces, from wind turbines to our horrible, terrible sewage machines!! These are all ways to constantly improve and balance your zoo, and are something I'm constantly coming back to and tweaking in my own zoos!

Wildlife Reintroduction

There are few things better for me in-game than feeling like I'm making a difference. I've got a zoo background, so the ability to reintroduce animals into the wild made me so so excited, and the day this building arrived I was beside myself with happiness!

Data is pulled from real-life population numbers from the IUCN, which means you can get an accurate idea of which animals are thriving, and which species may need a bit more help! You can find this here: https://www.iucnredlist.org/. Numbers will fluctuate, and you can help support populations by breeding and cloning endangered or extinct animals then releasing them back to their homes!

aaaand I think that's enough of my favourites. Again, thank you so much to everyone who has supported, wishlisted, chatted, asked questions and all the rest.

I'll see you on the 5th! xoxo

Meet the Factory Zoo!

Hey everyone!

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT'S ONLY TWO WEEKS UNTIL LET'S BUILD A ZOO LAUNCHES??

I'm beyond excited to get you all building and getting stuck into the game, it's been a VERY exciting week for the whole team this week as we cross t's, dot i's and add a whole host of new exciting SOUND EFFECTS to your game. It's been wild hearing all the animals in my zoo come to life this week, although...

With this zoo, I'm not sure that's a good thing. There's a lot I could show you here, so I'm going to pick some of the basics so as not to ruin TOO much for you.

I promised it last week, so let me run you through my FACTORY BASED ZOO. This will, as always, have some spoilers in it, so read on at your own peril. I know LOTS of people have been waiting to see what your bad morality options are, and as I've just hit -85 morality this seems like a great time to show you!

This zoo is built not with guests in mind, but with using my animals for... other purposes. That, unfortunately, means I need to save every penny where I can, and the first step for me was to stop paying for water and electricity. Thankfully, I've researched THIS building.

It's uhh. Well. If the water tastes funny here, it's because this is a Sewage Recirculator. The animals don't mind the funny taste, and who cares what my visitors think. It's saving me a WHOLE HEAP of money that I can pump into buying and generating tonnes and tonnes of animals, which I use for my main money-making schemes.

Once I'd saved up some money, I invested in a processor! This deals with all the raw materials my animals leave behind when they die and turns them into useful materials that I can both sell and use elsewhere to turn a bigger profit. While I could just jam them into my warehouse and forget about them, I've decided to take things a LITTLE bit further.

So (no judgement please), here's my pig enclosure and their happy neighbour next door, the bacon factory. I know it looks bad, but this way I remember which recipe ingredients go where and can easily check how well all my factories are doing! I can also check my warehouse to see what products I've got in stock and a breakdown of how much money I've made. I'll pop an early game screenshot of that in too, so as to not give TOO much away.

Aside from that, I have some horses and donkeys which feed into my glue factory - that's definitely earning me a fair chunk of money, but nothing QUITE compares to the CUTEST factory in the game. I'll let you work out what it makes ;)

My main focuses next are to work out how to produce more animals at a higher rate, though I'm not particularly worried about their care or the time they'll be spending with other animals!

Hopefully, that's not all been TOO distressing for a Friday afternoon! The question is, is this the zoo YOU'D love to build? I'm excited to hear all about your ideas, and in two weeks, see them all come to life! See you next week!

Introducing the Eco Zoo!

Hey everyone!

It's been a **HUGE** relief for me that you now all know that November 5th is our launch date!! Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who's spread the word and who has wishlisted the game over on Steam, it helps us out no end!!

With that out of the way, I've finally found a little time to relax, and just _play_ Let's Build a Zoo in the way that I wanted to, and it got me thinking about how you can build all kinds of zoos based on how you want to play, and so all the different types there are! I've been building a Factory Zoo, which I'm not 100% ready to share yet, but our lovely Sophie has been working on an Eco Zoo which relies on recycling as much as possible, collecting resources naturally and letting animals out into the wild, where their populations have been dwindling!

Let me show you around the key elements and tell you a little bit about how they work, in case this is this sort of utopia you'd like to build!

The Recycling Centre

So anyone who played the demo will know that trash can be a REAL issue - but maybe what you hadn't considered is what a global issue it could be too! An endless line of garbage trucks is terrible for pollution, and of course, no one wants to be endlessly filling landfills when you could make use of the facilities that you have!

So, introducing the RECYCLING CENTRE!

This bad boy can fit so many bits of garbage! If you replace your bins with recycling bins, you can redirect all your rubbish to this lovely building, and from there it will recycle it all to make plastic - which you can then either sell, or reuse in your gift shop! Sophie's done her best to make as much of the zoo self-sustaining as possible so this works a treat, powering her small city of gift shops on the way out of her zoo!

The other problem garbage brings is pollution from the trucks, but she's even thought of that, setting up a forest area!

All the trees in your zoo will help even out your CO2 emissions, and fill your zoo with lovely, breathable air! The other upside to this, is visitors always think her zoo is well decorated, and will happily follow the paths through these areas to get where they need to go!

RELEASING ANIMALS TO THE WILD

We've talked about this before over in our discord, but it definitely remains one of my favourite features. You can read a little more about it over in a previous update in the discord, but Sophie has been concentrating on breeding not for genomes, but to release endangered animals into the wild, stabilising their populations and encouraging them to thrive!

ENERGY SOURCES

Last but definitely not least, Sophie has entirely stopped buying her power from the grid, and instead is collecting her own rainwater, and generating her own electricity through these adorable wind turbines!

They're everywhere throughout her zoo, catching all the best breezes! Talking of breezes, she's also using methane to power some of her water pumps but uhh... I'll leave the machine she uses to do it as a secret. In all seriousness, watch out for the newspaper clipping about it, it's HILARIOUS!

Anyway, that's how Sophie's zoo runs! If I'm feeling brave, I'll give you a good look at mine next week! See you then!

Let's Build a Zoo launches NOVEMBER 5TH!

Hey there everyone!

We know lots of folks have been asking and waiting (and asking, and asking and asking...), so we're excited to announce that Let's Build a Zoo will be launching on NOVEMBER 5TH! Don't forget to hit that wishlist button to remind you - it helps us out a ton too!

In just over 3 weeks you'll be able to put on your Zoo Keeper's uniform and build the best (or worst) zoo to ever exist, splicing up animals, running farms and turning your animals into bags and belts! You'll be able to help or hinder a whole cast of characters and make your zoo YOURS, whatever you want that to look like!

Thank you so much to those of you who've shown an interest, chatted to us, asked questions, got involved with discord and read our dev updates - it's been an amazing journey. We cannot WAIT to see what you all think come November 5th!

Not long to go now!

Springloaded & No More Robots xoxo
