New Dredge update lets you fish in peace and take cute photos

Dredge is easily one of the best PC games I've played in 2023, and there's certainly been a few contenders for the spot at the top on that list. The nightmarish fishing adventure thrusts you into the waterlogged boots of a budding fisher, looking to make a small fortune on the isle of Greater Marrow. If you've been waiting for a photo mode to take pictures of Dredge's gorgeous scenery, then the new update is exactly what you've been waiting for.

DREDGE Update: v1.2.0

Hey anglers! We’ve just released our second chunk of content for DREDGE. In this update we’re adding photo mode, passive mode, new aberrations, and a bunch of new random encounters!

Watch the video below, then read on for the full notes - or dive in to the game first for a spoiler-free experience!
Patch Notes:

Features
• Added Photo Mode
    • This new ability can be unlocked after providing some assistance to a new character - The Photographer! You’ll find her at a new camp on an island to the south of The Marrows.
  • Added Passive Mode
    • This mode can be activated at any stage by selecting the option from the Settings menu. In this mode, you’ve nothing to fear from the creatures of the deep.
  • Added 10 new aberrations
  • Added 8 new types of wildlife for you to encounter, including one that isn’t afraid of the shallows...
  • Added new settings
    • V-sync
    • Pause In Background - the default behaviour of this has changed so that the game does not pause when it loses focus.
    • Camera Follow Mode - you can now detach the camera from the boat’s turning orientation. This means that when the boat turns, the camera won’t automatically turn to look in the boat’s new direction.
    • Spyglass Sensitivity - sliders for horizontal and vertical movement.
    • Haste VFX - disables the visual effects (FOV pull & screen shake) that occur when the Haste ability is activated.
Adjustments
• Added a new “General” tab to Settings and moved some options around.
  • Added a couple of new names to the credits.
  • Updated Dolphin SFX.
  • Dolphins and some other events are discouraged from swimming over the abyss of Stellar Basin.
Fixes
• Fixed an issue where the Crab Pot / Trawl Net information panel didn’t show correctly the first time if the game was loaded with either of these abilities pre-selected.
  • Fixed an issue where the game could freeze when downgrading a trawl net to another net with a smaller internal capacity.
  • Fixed an issue where discarding the package from The Mayor never removed the associated map marker.
  • Fixed an issue where an island in Devil’s Spine was culling incorrectly.
  • Fixed some localization issues.

And for our speedrunning community...
  • The Haste activation SFX does not play if Haste was deactivated recently.
  • The game now reports a few values to an Autosplitter.

Three indie games you need to grab during the Steam Summer Sale 2023

Every year I look through Steam sales, and there's always one game that stands out. Normally, this is because it's been on my wishlist for some time and has only just dropped to a value I'd be willing to pay, such as a triple-A game that I'd been on the fence about, or a smaller game that I couldn't justify paying full whack for.

However, as I was looking around the store during this year's Steam Summer sale, I noticed three indie games that I feel deserve far more exposure than they may be getting. One of these games is a self-published effort from a developer releasing their first game, while the other two come from smaller publishers. So if you're looking for an indie game that just hits a little differently, then we have a small selection of games that you should consider.

Dredge is one of those indie games that sticks with you long after you've played it. It features a creepy atmosphere inspired by the likes of H.P. Lovecraft which you traverse while out on various fishing adventures. The idyllic seascape setting offered by Dredge is overshadowed by its sinister twists in a unique blend that proved to be very successful for indie developer Black Salt Games. If you want to get a taste of the game's dark depths yourself, then there is no better time than now to do so as Dredge is on sale.

DREDGE Hotfix v1.1.2

Hey Anglers,

We've released a small patch to address some continued reports of players encountering issues with their save data. It makes us really sad to hear that a few players have lost their progress in the game, and we want to apologize to those affected. With that in mind, these are the notes on the improvements to our save system:
  • Players who were unable to open the game due to corrupt settings files should now be able to play.
  • Added multiple levels of data verification before, during and after saving the game.
  • A history of up to 50 backups is now kept (per save slot). These are stored inside the backup-saves folder.
As always, please continue to report any issues you encounter in our forums so that we can check them out.

Right, now we're back to working on our upcoming 1.2 update! Here's a quick peek at one of the new wildlife species that will soon be showing up alongside your boat. We can't wait to see what amazing photographs you all take when photo mode releases!
