Lost Ark’s latest effort to tackle its bot problem ended up banning lapsed players

Free to play fantasy MMO RPG Lost Ark got a bit too happy with its banhammer over the weekend, with lapsed players taking to the game’s Steam page to complain that they’d been banned for no reason other than inactivity. Players, or at least former players, of Lost Ark left more than 1300 negative reviews of the game on Saturday, and more than 1000 on Sunday. They claimed they’d received bans that appeared on their Steam profile without actually logging into the game recently.

False Bans Following January Bot Ban Waves

Greetings Heroes of Arkesia,

Following a recent wave of bot bans, we saw an increase in ban appeals from players who were been incorrectly impacted by these bans.

We determined the error that triggered these false bans, and have reversed for all affected players regardless of whether a support ticket has been filed. This means any game bans or marks on your Steam account have been removed, or will be removed without penalty shortly.

If for any reason you have persisting issues, please reach out to Customer Support. Thank you!

Thank you for your reports and patience as we worked to make this right with affected players.

Lost Ark dev Smilegate is working on bringing back all those real accounts it accidentally banned

Lost Ark developer Smilegate recently banned a wave of bots to prevent cheating, but a number of real players have found they were banned too.

Bot bans obviously aren't uncommon in any online game, particularly MMOs which can have huge playerbases. Smilegate recently put a ban wave into effect on Steam, getting rid of a large number of bots, but it also seems real players were caught up in the crossfire.

The ban appears to have mostly affected players that haven't logged in in a number of months, or those that have a small playtime. While a ban might not really matter to the player that isn't too invested in the game, bans do matter for your overall Steam account. Recent reviews on the game's Steam page are mostly negative at the time of writing as a result of the recent ban.
