How to improve mood in The Alters

How do you improve mood in The Alters? You would be forgiven for thinking that your alters are created merely to perform a function - that's how it seems on the face of things. You'll soon, however, discover that these creations are people, with thoughts and feelings and motives, and you need to find a way to balance their mood, lest you face the wrath of an alters revolt.

Many of the things you can do to improve mood in The Alters require additional sections of your base, so make sure you know how to upgrade your base before trying to tackle that bad mood that's been plaguing your group. Some of these also require specific alters, so make sure you're up to speed on how to create new alters before you continue.

[p]One run won’t show you everything: The Alters is designed for replayability. Scenes and outcomes change based on your choices and which alters are present.[/p][p][/p]
[p]Consider the Scientist early: We recommend creating the Scientist as your second alter - it can really help down the line if you’re not used to survival games.

[p]Adjust difficulty if needed: If you're struggling with production or just want to focus on the story, lower the economic difficulty.
[/p]
[p]Talk to your Alters: Might sound obvious, but if you see an icon by their portrait, don’t ignore it. These optional conversations can impact major moments later on in the game!

[p]Choices have consequences: Small decisions early on may have big effects later. Trust us on this.[/p][p][/p]
[p]No need for perfection: You won't see everything in one playthrough (e.g. you can’t create all alters), and that’s how it’s meant to be.

[p]Stockpile essentials: Keep metals, organics, filters, and repair kits handy. Running out at the wrong time can set you back significantly.[/p]

How long is The Alters?

How long is The Alters? Jan doesn't know the extent of how much trouble he's in, at least not at the beginning. Crash landed on an alien planet, the entire crew dead, a deadly sun on its way; things are looking great for old Dolski. There's a lot of work to be done, and a lot of alters to create.

It's easy to get lost in the mission in The Alters, with hours spent at your mining outposts, and nights spent watching movies with your newly-created pals. If you plan on unlocking every alter and neutralizing every anomaly, here's how long it will take, not factoring in any disastrous The Alters base breakdowns like we had.

The Alters review - a half-hearted gesture to a question never answered

One of my alters is hurt. He's being torn apart by what he is, both physically and mentally, and isn't sure if he can take the strain of existing in this body. He takes a drastic step in the night and needs urgent medical attention. I approach him, wanting to offer comfort; I think I know how he feels, after all - I'm him. Standing at the side of the infirmary bed, I select the only dialogue option: "I can see you've been a little tense lately."
