Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away has been a "guiding star" for gorgeous platformer Planet Of Lana

Wishfully's upcoming cinematic platformer Planet Of Lana turned eyes and heads when it was first announced at E3 2021, and the comparison we instantly settled upon was "like Ori meets Inside". At a recent ID@Xbox showcase we attended last week, creative director and Wishfully co-founder Adam Stjärnljus acknowledged that Playdead connection, saying that both Limbo and Inside "had a huge impact on me". But he also said Studio Ghibli's animated film Spirited Away was another key influence, which, yep, that definitely tracks.

"I was very inspired by Studio Ghibli films, and especially the film Spirited Away," Stjärnljus told us. "That's been kind of like a guiding star from the beginning in terms of tonality with this serious, emotional story, but [also] still, like, a fun quirkiness to it, and really this sense of exploring another world, which we really want."

This cute platformer is like a Studio Ghibli movie about a hypnotic alien cat

On paper, Lana's situation isn't great. She's a young girl, lost in an alien wilderness, desperately trying to reunite with her family in the midst of an invasion of evil robots. But as soon as you see Planet of Lana in motion, the whole situation suddenly seems very chill. The gorgeous, painted backdrops have the soft colour palette of a Studio Ghibli movie, and there's a disarming tranquillity to the lush, vibrant land around here. With its child protagonist and weighty, 2D puzzle-platforming, it's strongly reminiscent of Limbo, but with completely the opposite tone—where that game was bleak and brutal, Planet of Lana leaves you feeling that everything's probably going to be alright in the end...

Planet of Lana demo will premiere in the Steam Next Fest: February!

Heya friends of Lana and Mui,

Adam here! It's been a while, right? Sorry for the radio silence, but we made great progress over the last month. And because of that I'm super happy to announce that Planet of Lana will be part of the Steam Next Fest starting on Monday! ːsteamhappyː

Even though Planet of Lana was playable at gamescom last year (it was so good to see you peeps playing!), the Steam Next Fest is an exciting premiere for us: it's the first time you can try the mouse and keyboard controlls, and it's the first time we make the demo available to such an incredibly vast group of players!

And that's why this is extremely exciting for us! We want to hear your opinion about our game of course, because we want to offer the best possible experience with Lana and Mui once Planet of Lana releases this spring.

Anyway folks, can't wait to see you all diving into the Planet of Lana demo next Monday! If you want us to ping you once the demo is live, feel free to sign up for our newsletter and stay in touch on Twitter.

Until then, I wish you all a relaxing weekend!

Planet of Lana release moved to spring 2023, coming day one to Xbox Game Pass

The lovely cinematic puzzle adventure Planet of Lana will miss its planned 2022 release and will instead arrive during spring 2023.

According to publisher Thunderful and independent studio Wishfully, the delay will provide the development team with extra time to ensure the game meets its full potential.

"We’re sorry that completing development on Planet of Lana will take longer than initially expected, but we promise it will be worth the wait,” said Wishfully director Adam Stjarnljus.
