Serum Scanner - Keep vertical on use

I will remember the day I found the Serum Scanner till the end of my life. At first, I didn’t know what it was at all. The only thing written on it was “keep vertical on use.” When I pressed the button on the device, it sent a visible signal outwards that formed a
circle around me.

I tried it in a few different spots without any luck, and then I finally understood its purpose. It worked like a radar that showed me plants rich in Serum, growing around the area. (Imagine going mushroom picking with a device that would show you the placement of all mushrooms in the forest)

… the last signal I picked up on the scanner that day was different. As I came closer, I could see that the dot was changing position. At that moment, I realized that the scanner wasn’t only discovering plants, but it was picking up any living thing that had Serum inside. The dot was moving towards me, fast.

Something out there

The day started well. It was sunny outside, and my pain was almost gone. For the first time in here, I felt like I was in control. I had my supplies, around ten traps set up outside the shelter if some uninvited guest wanted to visit me, and enough Serum to survive for a while. Plus, there were still two fume toad corpses hanging upside-down in the corner of the shed, ready for extraction.

It was time for me to look for answers, to find the way out from this god-forsaken place. I went back to the spot I found the other day. There was still an entire wing of the building that I didn’t search. I went in through the big hole in the door that looked like a cannonball just went through it. It was pretty dark inside, but I could see that someone or something had trashed this place entirely. Floors were covered with broken equipment, cables were hanging from the ceiling, and radioactive warnings were posted all over the walls.

I gathered some stuff I thought I could use for my crafting table. I also found a journal that I couldn’t wait to read. When I was going back to the safe zone, It was already getting dark. I wasn’t far away from my shelter when I heard a high-pitched sound. I’ve heard it before. It was the last sound a fume toad makes before it dies. Another trap did its job, I thought to myself and went to examine it.

I was surprised to see that my trap was untouched, but I saw something that scared the living thing out of me right next to it. An animal was feasting on a fume toad, a big one, looking like a mutated wolf, ripping the frog apart with its teeth. I froze in place, my hand tightly gripped on the wooden spear. The wolf looked up from above its prey, and our eyes met.

Right then, I knew only one of us would make it home tonight.
