Modding
• A change has been made to the way scenarios are handled in the Map Editor. To make your custom scenarios work, you MUST re-export all of them from the Map Editor.
After re-exporting, you also need to move the file "CamPaths_LevelDesign.ndfbin" from the "CamPath" folder and place it directly in the root of each of your scenario folders, located in "Saved Games\\EugenSystems\\WARNO\\Scenario", otherwise they won’t be playable.
  • Improved system to prevent unintended changes to weapon angle values after updates.

LANDJUT Division #5 - 15 Dywizja Zmechanizowana

Hello commanders!

We hope you are well. In today’s DevBlog, we take a look at another new WARNO - LANDJUT division (and the final Warsaw Pact one): the Polish 15 Dywizja Zmechanizowana or 15th Mechanized Infantry Division.

Let’s go!
The Polish 15 Dywizja Zmechanizowana
We already briefly mentioned the 15 Dywizja Zmechanizowana in our write-up for WARNO - NORTHAG’s Grupa Desantowa. To recap: this mechanized infantry division was to form the third component of the Polish “assault corps,” tasked with taking the Danish Isles. It would act as a follow-up wave behind the 6 Brygada Powietrznodesantowa, or 6th Airborne Brigade, and the 7 Brygadę Desantowa, or 7th Sea Landing Brigade.

While the Grupa Desantowa was tailored to storm the Danish Zealand, with the two elite brigades performing a combined strike from the air and the sea, with the 15 Dywizja Zmechanizowana ferried to hostile NATO shores to “mop up” any remaining opposition.

Unlike the two brigades of the assault corps, which were the pride of the Polish People’s Army, the 15 Dywizja Zmechanizowana was a mobilization division. Kept at reduced strength during peacetime, the mechanized infantry division would see an influx of reservists during conflict, tasked with manning mostly older equipment dragged out of storage.
The Polish 15 Dywizja Zmechanizowana Further Detailed
The formation’s history is uneventful: it was first formed as an infantry division in 1954 in Warsaw, then reshuffled, downgraded to a mobilization division, and ultimately assigned in the late 1960s to support the Polish landings aimed at Denmark. As such, it was transferred to the Pomeranian Military District in 1975 and bolstered in terms of equipment and personnel (though it was still manned by reservists).

Two independent units were potentially earmarked to support the division:
  • The Polish People’s Army 24 Brygada Moździerzy, or 24th Mortar Brigade, which was - as could be guessed - an artillery unit. Likewise, a mobilization formation would bring to bear an arsenal of older but big guns.
  • The Nationale Volksarmee Küstenverteidigungsregiment 18, or Coastal Defense Regiment 18. This was the closest the East Germans had to “marines”. While originally lent to be under the control of the Volksmarine, to be trained in landing operations in support of Warsaw Pact comrades against Denmark, in 1988 the formation was officially transferred from the army to the East German navy, with a new regiment taking its place within the 20. Motorisierte Schützendivision (as featured in WARNO’s Army General campaign “Six Days to the Weser”). Being the Volksmarine’s sole infantry regiment, it was lavishly equipped and used to support the Polish-led invasion of Denmark in WARNO.

As a Warsaw Pact reserve division, with older equipment, the 15 Dywizja Zmechanizowana will have a unique advantage among other mobilization formations in WARNO: it will be able to field both cheap reservists, a core of regulars, but also well-trained and Resolute East German marines.
The 15 Dywizja Zmechanizowana in WARNO
How will the 15 Dywizja Zmechanizowana look like in WARNO - LANDJUT? New units are both italic and bolded. All the following is still a work in progress.

LOG
  • A pretty good category. After all, these are the second assault wave, bringing the supplies!
  • Command units include the WD-43 jeep, SKOT R-2M APC, and the BWP-1K3 IFV.
  • Supply units can deploy as an FOB, the amphibious BAW-485 (the World War II-era DUKW), and the heavy KRAZ-255B trucks, plus the Mi-8T supply helicopter.

INF
  • A very good category. Some usual Polish suspects include:
    • PIECHOTA ZMECH. in command, "vanilla", and SVD variants. The latter two squads are both on a single card, representing the few professional mechanized infantry squads in the division. All units come in (new) LO-1800 (East German) trucks or the BWP-1.
    • PIECHOTA squads in command, "vanilla" and SVD variants. It follows the same card distribution as above, representing the few professional APC-based soldiers, all coming in LO-1800 trucks or the SKOT-2A.
    • Combat engineers take the form of the usual DOW. SAPERY and SAPERY SZTURMOWI squads, with the addition of the new REZ. SAPERY, which are 8-strong squads fielding 7x PM-63, 1x PKM, Satchel charges and the Reservist trait. They can be deployed in softskins or the SKOT-2 APC.
    • The division also has access to the standard array of support SPG-9, FAGOT, SWS, military police, and the DRUZYNA PPANC. tank hunters. The East Germans also bring a few KONKURS ATGM teams.
    • As with any Polish division, the 15 Dywizja Zmechanizowana had its own organic commando company, hence the KOMANDOSI special forces squads in HONKERS 4011 or helicopters.
  • New units include some of the most soldier-filled squads: the REZERWISCI, 12-strong with kbk AK, 1x PKMm and RPG-17VM, and the REZERWISCI (SVD), which are the same size with 2x PKM and 1x SVD but fielding Komar anti-tank weapons. Both receive the Reservist trait, and come in LO-1800 or TOPAS-2A.
  • East Germany’s specially trained “amphibious soldiers” were dubbed PANZERMATROSEN (literally “armored sailors”) and came as 8-man squads with 6x MPI-AK-74N, 1x LMG-K, 1x SVD, and RPG-7VR.
  • The PANZERMATROSEN FÜH. are 3-strong command squads with 3x MPI-AK-74N, 1x RPG-7VL, and Smoke grenades. Both deploy with the Resolute trait, riding to battle in softskins or the SPW-70 APC.

ART
  • An average category with the division’s organic artillery being of mediocre quality, but reinforced in WARNO with the 24th Mortar Brigade.
  • This results in older M43 120mm mortars, and the M30 122mm and ML-20 152mm howitzers, with the MLRS being the older BM-14M type (though new to Poland, already featured with the Soviets in WARNO - SOUTHAG’s 17-ya Gvardeyskaya Tankovaya Diviziya).
  • The East German Coastal Defense Regiment 18 brings some more modern 2S12 120mm mortars (new to the East Germans, but featured extensively with Soviets in WARNO) as well as the self-propelled 2S1 GVOZDIKA.
  • The influx of new weaponry comes courtesy of the 24th Mortar Brigade:
    • The new heavy M43 160mm and super-heavy M240 240mm mortars, the latter already featured with Nemesis #1 - Air Assault’s Soviet 56-ya O.G. Desantno-Shturmovaya Brigada, but here without the extended rocket-assisted rounds (hence less range) nor Cluster rounds. Both units also feature the Reservist trait.
    • The D-1 152mm howitzer and the A-19 122mm towed gun, the latter with a decent 1925m anti-armor round to counter any wayward light tank or APC.
    • Plus the “poor man’s Urugan” BM-24M 240mm MLRS (new to Poland in WARNO).

TANK
  • Rather average with the division only having access to the older-generation T-55 tank.
  • This means you’ll get to deploy the T-55AD command tanks and a single card each of T-55A and T-55AS "coffin-tank" with it's mine-clearing rocket charges.
  • More numerous are the (new) T-55U, which are locally upgraded old T-54 tanks to the slightly less venerable T-55A standard. Visually different from other T-55 versions, these tanks do carry the same stats plus the Reservist trait.
  • The East German Coastal Defense Regiment 18 brings a single card of Resolute KPZ. T-55AM2B.
  • Anti-tank options include the Polish BRDM-2 MALYUTKA-P and the D-44 85mm towed anti-tank gun (the latter was previously featured with the East Germans but is new to the Polish armed forces in WARNO).
  • Lastly, the East German SPW-40P2 KONKURS will also make an appearance.

REC
  • A pretty good category with the usual complement of:
    • Polish ZWIADOWCZY and SAPERY ZWIADOWCY scout teams, as well as ROZP. SPECJALNE commandos.
    • Recon vehicles include the BRDM-1 PSNR-1 radar and BRDM-2 armored cars.
    • The Volksmarine provides its AUFKL. MI-14PL radar recon helicopter.
  • New units are:
    • Polish reserve REZ. ZWIADOWCY 3-strong scout team in UAZ, OT-65, or BRDM-1.
    • The R-330T TARAN SIGINT recon vehicle, based on the MT-LB.
    • And one of the most eagerly awaited, the FORMOZA naval special forces. These are 6-strong recon squads with 6x PM-63, Igla MANPAD ("borrowed" from their Soviet comrades, no doubt), Satchel charges, and the RPG-18.

AA
  • Pretty good, with the division’s anti-air umbrella specifically brought up to reinforce the Polish 6th Airborne and 7th Sea Landing brigades already on enemy shores.
  • Most units available will be classical: STRZALA-2M MANPAD teams, ZU-23-2 23mm and AZP S-60 57mm guns, plus STRZALA-1M mobile SAM and the HYBNERYT and ZSU-23-M1 SZYLKA SPAAGs. One new addition is the light LO-1800 ZPU-2 AA truck.
  • The East Germans bring their W50 LA/A 25mm gun truck and the long-range OSA-AKM SAM.

HEL
  • A very bad category, as all available Polish helicopters were committed to support the first assault wave.
  • As such, this division only gets to deploy a single card of East German Mi-8TB.

AIR
  • Three different air forces will provide the air cover for the 15 Dywizja Zmechanizowana:
    • The Air Force of the Polish Army deploys the Su-7BKL in [HE] and [RKT] variants, which are similar to the Czechoslovakian variants from Nemesis #5 - Southern Flank. New variants include [NPLM] with gun and 8x ZB-500 napalm bombs, and the unarmed [EW] with, you might have guessed it, the Electronic Warfare trait which will try to scramble enemy air defense's targeting systems.
    • The capable Su-22M4 in [HE], [CLU], [AT], and [SEAD] loadouts.
    • Also, we thought the Lim-6M ought to be featured in at least one Polish division, to be especially fitting in a reserve one.
  • The East Germans provide some air superiority cover with the MiG-21bis [AA2].

  • Finally, the Soviet Air Forces operated two regiments of Su-27s in Poland, granting the 15 Dywizja Zmechanizowana several Su-27S [AA1] and the new Su-27S [AA2]. This latter variant features a new model with prominent jammers on its wingtips, raising the aircraft’s ECM to 40%, while also bringing an on-board gun, 4x R-27ER and 2x R-27T anti-air missiles.

The 15 Dywizja Zmechanizowana is a mobilization division that can count on plentiful reservist units, with a small core of professional soldiers, further supported in the field by East German “marines” and Soviet air power.

LANDJUT Division #4 - Jyske Division

Hello!

Rejoice, commanders, we return with another preview of our upcoming WARNO - LANDJUT expansion.

In today’s DevBlog, we’ll take a look at a brand-new NATO nation, Denmark, and its one and only Cold War standing formation: the Jyske Division or Jutland Division.

Let’s go.
The Danish Armed Forces
Denmark was one of NATO’s founding members in 1949, occupying a strategically important position: the entrance between the Baltic Sea (mostly controlled by communist-aligned or neutral nations) and the North Sea.

The Royal Danish Army, our focus in WARNO, was part of the Forsvaret (Danish Defence), the unifying armed forces of the Kingdom of Denmark, charged with the defence of Denmark and its overseas territories of Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

Based in Karup, the Royal Danish Army Command was divided into two parts during peacetime: Western and Eastern Command. In conflict, the Western Command would be transferred in its entirety to NATO’s LANDJUT (covering Jutland), while the Eastern Command would become part of LANDZEALAND (covering Copenhagen).

While the Royal Danish Army was small, the Home Guard would have played an important role in getting more able-bodied men under arms in times of war. They were tasked with securing key military facilities and reinforcing regular army units.
Denmark in NATO
As WARNO - LANDJUT is taking the fight to Denmark, so too, we are exploring new military theatres. Though part of the actual “continent” of Europe, the Danish Armed Forces were nonetheless attached to AFNORTH or Allied Forces Northern Europe, instead of AFCENT, being Allied Forces Central Europe (of which NORTHAG, CENTAG, and SOUTHAG were part).

However, as we can all see on the map, the country was separated from Norway (forming the bulk of AFNORTH) by the Danish Straits, including the Kattegat and Skagerrak. This meant that Denmark was de facto its own subcommand, called BALTAP (Allied Forces Baltic Approaches), whose main component was LANDJUT (Allied Land Forces Schleswig-Holstein and Jutland).

LANDJUT regrouped most of Denmark's small regular army, chiefly made up of the Jyske Division and the Jutland Battlegroup, which was an independent reinforced regiment/brigade, as well as several smaller independent units. Just like NORTHAG’s I (NL) Corps, these formations were considered too slow to mobilize or too weak to resist a full-on communist land invasion through West Germany’s Schleswig-Holstein on their own. Therefore, the northern-most Bundeswehr division defending the approaches to Denmark, the 6. Panzergrenadier-Division was attached to LANDJUT instead of NORTHAG.

Not only, as we explained previously, the West German formation was reinforced to make it the biggest NATO land division in the late 1980s. The West Germans were tasked to delay the Warsaw Pact land offensive against Denmark long enough for the Danes to mobilize their (numerous) Home Guard units. An amphibious assault was also anticipated against the Danish Isles in the straits, which we will cover on a later date.
The Danish Jyske Division
Today’s focus will be on Denmark’s only standing division, the Jyske Division (Jutland Division). Made up of three mechanized infantry brigades and one artillery brigade, plus several battalions, this formation fields as many tanks as a full-blown West German Panzergrenadier division, but with notably older-generation equipment.

The Jyske Division was formed in 1951 and headquartered in Frederica. With little in the way of peacetime strength, reservists (not Home Guard, that’s a different service arm altogether) would have been used to fill out the ranks quickly. As mentioned, the Jyske Division was to move - at haste - to the south, to help defend the approaches to Denmark with their West German allies.
The Jyske Division in WARNO
How will the Jyske Division look like in WARNO - LANDJUT? New units are both italic and bolded. All of the following is still a work-in-progress, including the localisation of unit names.

Note that the LARO mentioned below is the Danish designation for their variants of the venerable Land Rover jeeps.
All new Danish units will have new infantry models and dialogue

LOG
An average category.
  • Command units include the LARO KOMMANDO and the M113A1 KSN armored vehicle.
  • Deployable supply units are BEDFORD MJ2P medium and MD JUPITER heavy supply trucks, as well as a FOB.

INF
A good category.
  • The most common infantry are the capable PANSERINFANTERI mechanized infantry squad. The following flavors are available:
    • They come as either 8-strong, with 7x Gv m/75 (which are G3 battle rifles), one MG m/62 (which is a West German MG-3 machine gun) and a Carl Gustav recoilless rifle. This squad can deploy in either a BEDFORD M2JP or M113A1.
    • PANSERINFANTERIFØRER are 8-strong command squads with 3x Hovea SMGs, 4x Gv m/75, one MG m/62 and a Redeye MANPAD. They come in either BEDFORD M2JP or M113A1.
  • INGENIØRER are combat engineer squads, with the same strength and small arms loadout as the regular infantry, but instead carrying LAW and Satchel charges. They can deploy in the same transports.
  • INGENIØRERFØRER are 3-strong command squads with Hovea SMGs, Carl Gustav, and Smoke grenades. They deploy in LARO jeeps.
  • Specialist infantry come in the form of the PANSERVÆRNSSKYTTER anti-tank squad, 6-strong with 2x Hovea, 4x Gv m/75, and two Carl Gustav. They deploy in either LARO or the M113A1.
  • As a single battalion of motorized infantry was attached to the division; they provide a single card of INFANTERI (PNÆV) which field 1x Hovea SMG, 6x Gv m/75, and 1x MG m/62, plus a LAW, and can only deploy in a BEDFORD M2JP.
  • Weapon support teams are the regular MG M/62 7,62mm (being the MG-3) and the TMG M/50 12,7mm (the M2HB) medium and heavy machine guns, plus the M/87 I-TOW and MILITÆRPOLITI military police. All can deploy in LARO jeeps, while the latter squad can also be whisked to the battlefield in a Volkswagen bus, with the Military Police trait, the M/255 MILITÆRPOLITI.
  • Finally the well-known and famous JÆGERE special forces squad completes this roster. These are 6-strong, and armed with 4x Kb m/85 (being the American M4 Carbine), 1x MG m/85 (Minimi), 1x Fsg m/85 (MSG-90) and LAW, plus the Airborne, Special Forces and Shock traits.

ART
A pretty good category.
  • Mortars come both in 81mm caliber, being towed as the MORTER M/57 81mm or self-propelled as the M125.
  • Artillery pieces further include the towed HAUBITS M114/39 155mm (already featured with the Netherlands) and the HAUBITS M/55 203mm (a World War II left-over, already featured with Belgium), as well as the M109A3 (a brand-new model redone for this division).

TANK
A good category.
  • The main Danish armored workhorse is the LEOPARD 1 DK, an improved Leopard 1A3. It comes in vanilla and Command variants. Due to the WARNO’s March to War, we added one additional card of the more advanced LEOPARD 1A5-DK, an upgrade program started in 1990, but which is a different variant and model than the West German 1A5 (although with similar stats).

  • Used as a support tank for the motorized infantry battalion, and as tank destroyers, the division also fields older CENTURION MK.V. These aren't British Centurion Mk.5, but instead an Mk.3 with the coaxial machine gun replaced with an M1919, while retaining the original 20-pounder (84mm) gun - a fragile but more accurate tank gun. This unit also comes in vanilla and Command variant, as well as the CENTURION MK.V/2, upgunned with the L7 105mm, and closer in stats to the Dutch CENTURION MK.5/2, though differing in some details.
  • Tank destroyers come in the form of LARO M/87 (Landrover with an I-TOW) and the M113 TOW-2 (missiles courtesy from the Americans).
  • Lastly, the M113A2 PNMK, which is a locally modified M113A1 fielding an Oerlikon KBA 25mm autocannon - the same one as mounted on Dutch and Belgian AIFV 25mm. These are used as fire support vehicles, with two attached to each infantry company. In WARNO, they will be considered a light tank.

REC
Not too stellar, with infantry scouts coming in the following variants:
  • SPEJDERE (DYKN): 3-man team with 2x Gv m/75, 1x MG m/62, and a Carl Gustav. They come in a LARO.
  • SPEJDERE: 4-man team with 1x Gv m/75 and 2x MG m/62. They come in a LARO.
  • PANSERSPEJDERE: 10-man squad with 9x Gv m/75, 1x MG m/62, and a Carl Gustav. They come in BEDFORD MJ2P and recon M113A1.
  • SEP/VLK: these 6-man Long Range Recon Patrols are not part of the regular Army, but the Home Guard. They are the Home Guard's elite, and as such, don’t feature the Reservist trait. Armed with Hovea SMGs, LAW, and Smoke grenades, this recon unit deploys with the Special Forces, Shock, Airborne, and GSR traits.
  • Aerial recon comes in the form of an unarmed OH-6 helicopter, Vietnam-era (and Magnum P.I.’s) iconic "Loach".
  • Armored recon vehicles are:
    • The MPR M/67, which is the GREEN ARCHER ground radar in Danish disguise.
    • The M41-DK1. While clearly not the most modern NATO army, Denmark invested heavily in modernizing and keeping its old M41 light tank fleet in service. One result is the M41-DK1, probably one of the best light recon tanks in WARNO. Although it retains the armor, lack of stabilizer, and 76mm caliber gun from the original M41 (as found with Belgium in-game), this Danish recon unit has improved ammunition, improved long-range fire (its range is 2275m!), improved accuracy, improved engine, dedicated recon (Very Good) optics, and smoke dischargers!

AA
  • Rather mediocre with three well-known units.
    • The LRKT HAMLET, which is the Danish designation for a REDEYE MANPAD team.
    • The LVK M/70 40mm, Danish designation for the same BOFORS L70 West Germany deploys.
    • And the I-HAWK.

HEL
Likewise mediocre, though not in quality, but in the number of choices and slots.
  • Only one option is available: the PVH FENNEC. This is the French Ecureuil helicopter (as found with 152e Division d’Infanterie) fitted with four AGTM tubes, loaded in this case with TOW-2. Since this is a March to War unit (ordered in 1987 but only entered service in 1991), it will only be available in limited numbers. Denmark had only a few of these otherwise excellent (and sly) heliborne tank killers.

AIR
The Royal Danish Air Force operated two planes in the late 1980s.
  • The ubiquitous F-16A, coming in many loadouts:
    • [AA1] with 4x AIM-9N and 2x AIM-9L.
    • [AA2] with 4x AIM-9L, similar to the variant fielded by the Dutch.
    • [AA3] with 4x AIM-9L(i), the improved German Sidewinder.
    • It also comes in the [AT] variant with 4x AIM-9N plus 2x AGM-65G Mavericks. In real life, these were ordered in 1988, but only delivered after the end of the Cold War.
    • [CLU] with 10x Rockeye II cluster bombs and 2x AIM-9N.
    • [HE] with 4x Mk.84 925kg HE bombs and 2x AIM-9N.
    • [HE/CLU] with 6x Rockeye II cluster bombs and 2x Mk.83 454kg HE bombs, plus 2x AIM-9N.
  • The iconic Swedish Saab 35 Draken, known in Danish service as the F 35 WDNS (not that F-35!). While designed as an interceptor, the Danish fielded variant was intended to be purely used as a strike fighter. In this division, it will come as the F 35 WDNS [RKT] with twin ADEN guns and six 19-rounds pods of Hydra 70 rockets.

The Jyske Division is a capable mechanized infantry division with an array of older armored vehicles. Air cover is powerful, as well as its artillery and infantry forces.

Nemesis #6 - The Magdeburg Counterstrike Models Preview

Hello all!

We (briefly) interrupt our regular WARNO - LANDJUT showcases with a visual preview of the latest toys finished for Nemesis #6 - The Magdeburg Counterstrike.

Only two models remain missing in action. The Strike Team has already been sent to the digital battlefields for their testing duties, which leaves us with a chance to highlight the upcoming additions to the ever-expanding WARNO arsenal.

Let’s take a look!
Nemesis #6 - The Magdeburg Counterstrike Detailed
You’ll lead the charge in the upcoming Nemesis - The Magdeburg Counterstrike, a mini DLC bringing two new “premier” divisions, featuring new units, vehicles, and weapons. NATO’s U.S. 1st Cavalry Division, with extra British armor, will go up against the anti-tank forces of the Warsaw Pact’s Soviet 1-ya Gvardeyskaya Proletarskaya Motostrelkovaya Diviziya or 1st Guards Proletarian Motorized Infantry Division.

An arsenal of new units will be available to command, from M2 BRADLEY IFVs, up-armored M1 MOD main battle tanks and the YCQM-121A PAVE TIGER drone, to T-72AV tanks, PERO UAVs, and MiG-25PD interceptors.

We hope to release Nemesis #6 - the Magdeburg Counterstrike soon.
Nemesis Unit Preview - NATO
Let’s start with NATO, and with two new Bradley IFV variants specifically:

The M2A2 BRAT is an up-armored variant of the existing IFV, gaining the ERA trait as well as +1 Front and Side armor. There are main battle tanks in WARNO that are less protected, and yet this American armored vehicle is "just" an IFV!

Next up is the unusual M3 ETAS armored recon IFV, with its electro-optical extendable observation mast stolen from an OH-58D Kiowa! This grants the recon unit Exceptional Optics (but limits its ATGM use to one single volley).

Another new unit found with the 1st Cavalry Division is the PAVE TIGER Electronic Warfare UAV.

And while we stick with the topic of EW, we’ve added (unannounced during the Nemesis vote, so this is a first) the new AN/MLQ-334 TACJAM as a recon/jammer vehicle. It is based on the M548 supply vehicle.

The 1st Cavalry’s TROOPERS squads will also have their own infantry models, either with the Stetson or helmet, but all with the divisional shoulder patch. And, of course, their own unit cards.
Nemesis Unit Preview - Warsaw Pact
Let’s go to the communists: the 1-ya Gvardeyskaya Proletarskaya Motostrelkovaya Diviziya will feature two new T-72 models, the T-72 Obr. 77 and ERA-protected T-72AV.

A blast from the past, yet looking like the best sci-fi space fighter out there, we present the Yak-28PP Electronic Warfare plane.

And while not a new model, the long-range anti-tank MT-LB SHTURM ATAKA received a new lick of paint, with a brand-new three-tone camouflage as a result.

To bring some diversity into the Soviet Army’s infantry roster, the division will receive a few new infantry units (not included in the original proposal, so new!).

  • MOTOSTRELKI (RPG-7VS), which are BMP-borne infantry squads with fewer RPGs but cheaper to deploy. These represent the division’s mobilization status and called-up infantry to fill out the ranks.
  • REZERVISTI (SVD) is a more anti-infantry orientated reserve squad.

That’s all for this preview. We’ll be back soon with more details on Nemesis #6’s release.

LANDJUT Division #3 - 336-ya OG Brigada Morskoy Pekhoty

Hello, commanders!

We are back again. In today’s DevBlog, you’ll find the third preview of our upcoming WARNO - LANDJUT expansion.

Let’s go and check out the Soviet “Black Death” naval infantry of the 336-ya Otdel’naya Gvardeyskaya Brigada Morskoy Pekhoty or the 336th Separate Guards Naval Infantry Brigade.

Onwards!
The Soviet 336-ya OG Brigada Morskoy Pekhoty
Let’s welcome to the stage the elite Soviet Naval Infantry, a combat arm of the Soviet Navy. The 336-ya Otdel’naya Gvardeyskaya Brigada Morskoy Pekhoty or the 336th Separate Guards Naval Infantry Brigade was stationed in Kaliningrad from 1963 until the end of the Cold War. The so-called “Black Death” naval infantry (a nickname given to the sailors as a whole by the Germans in World War II, when they were employed on land to combat the Axis) was the main amphibious combat arm of the Soviet Army. The elite Soviet naval infantry earned its nickname for its stubbornness and black uniforms.

The 336-ya OG Brigada Morskoy Pekhoty started as a regular formation, as the 347th Rifle Regiment, part of the 308th Rifle Division. These men fought, with distinction, during the Battle of Stalingrad, including crucial combat at the Barrikady Factory. Subsequent fighting saw them engaged in combat on the Bryansk Front and in Orel, and in liberating Bialystok, as well as earning the honorific “Guards” status.

Converted to the 336th Motorized Rifle Regiment, it was only two decades after the war’s end that the formation was selected (after a favorable performance during training exercises) into a specialized naval infantry unit in 1963.
The 336-ya OG Brigada Morskoy Pekhoty’s in the Cold War
The main Soviet Naval Infantry formations were assigned to Soviet Navy fleets, with the brigades and divisions receiving amphibious-capable APCs and armored vehicles, transported to the battlefield in dedicated landing ships or massive hovercrafts.

The 336-ya OG Brigada Morskoy Pekhoty was part of the Baltic Fleet. The naval infantrymen would most likely see action against the Nordic countries, specifically Denmark, to secure the crucial Baltic Straits. The Soviet naval infantry’s role was likely to support ground operations in Western Europe rather than serve as an expeditionary force.

The 336-ya OG Brigada Morskoy Pekhoty was a small brigade in peacetime, requiring mobilization to bring it up to war strength. Reorganized into full brigade status in 1979, reservists would not only beef up the battalions but also create one or two new naval infantry battalions and one additional air assault battalion. This influx would effectively turn the formation into a small division, ready to be sent to Danish shores.
The 336-ya OG Brigada Morskoy Pekhoty in WARNO
So, how will the 336-ya OG Brigada Morskoy Pekhoty look like in WARNO - LANDJUT? New units are both italic and bolded and are still work-in-progress.

All of the “Black Death” units (with the prefix MOR.) will receive the Resolute trait, unless stated otherwise.

LOG
  • Command units are the ubiquitous (but Soviet Navy-used) MOR. BELOZOR jeep and MOR. CHAIKA armored vehicle.
  • Supply units are plentiful and include the good ‘ol World War II-era DUKW, already featured with communist Poland in WARNO, known as the MOR. BAV-485.
  • Plus, you’ll get the following new units: the PTS-2 heavy amphibious barges, the MOR. ZIL-131 SNAB truck, favored by the Soviet Navy, and the MOR. Mi-14PS helicopter.
  • And more: although the division has no FOB, the KALMAR hovercraft will act as a smaller, semi-mobile one. Able to move on water as well as on land (at a crawl), it is the first vehicle of its kind to join WARNO's arsenal.

INF
  • A very good category with all infantry units featuring the new Soviet Naval Infantry models. These can be divided into two categories: “wet” marines and “airborne” sailors. The former excel in amphibious landings; the latter in striking in-land objectives by parachute or helicopter-borne air assault.
  • The “wet” Soviet Naval Infantry in the division:
    • MORPEKHI are 9-strong squads with AKS-74 and one RPK-74. As a default, they come armed with the RGP-7VR, but also in RPG-22 and SVD squad variants.
    • The MORPEKHI KOMROTI are 5-strong squads with AKS-74U SMGs, one RPK, Igla, and Smoke grenades.
    • The reservist REZ. MORPEKHI are represented by an 11-strong squad wielding the RPG-18 and lacking the Resolute trait. They all come in ZIL-131 trucks or the MOR. BTR-60, with a selected few also having the MOR. BTR-80 as a transport option.
    • There is also the large MORPEKHI (PTS) 14-strong squad with AKS-74, two RPK-74, one SVD and RPG-7VL, delivered onto enemy shores via the MOR. PTS-2 barge.
  • The “airborne” Soviet naval infantrymen are:
    • ”Airborne” DESANT. MORPEKHI are also organized as 9-strong squads, with the same weapon distribution as their “wet” counterparts but instead fielding the RPG-7VM.
    • The DESANT. MOR. KOMROTI are 6-strong squads with AKS-74, one RPK-74, and Smoke grenades.
    • The REZ. DESANT. MORPEKHI are 11 strong, with the same small arms and the RPG-18, but also lacking the Resolute trait.
    • With the lack of BMD vehicles, the paratroopers are dropped as infantry with GAZ-66 truck only, but still get the Airborne trait.
  • The MOR. SAPERI squads contain 5 soldiers, featuring the same loadout as above, plus a Satchel charge, as well as an RPO-A.
  • The MOR. SAPERI KOMROTI are 4-strong leader squads with AKS-74 and RPG-7VM. The above squads come in either MT-LB or the MOR. BTR-60PB, while the command squads can also deploy in the small MAV amphibious jeep.
  • Support weapon teams include the usual arsenal of SPG-9, FAGOT, KONKURS, PKM, and PLAMYA, in both "wet" or "airborne" variants.
  • Lastly, the MOR. SPETSNAZ are 12-man special forces squads wielding the AKS-74U, two PKM, and RPO-A, plus the Special Forces and Airborne traits.

ART
  • A pretty good category, with mortars coming in the form of either the MOR. 2B9 82mm or the MOR. 2S12 120mm.
  • Self-propelled artillery support deploys as the MOR. 2S9-1 SVIRISTELKA, a 2S9 naval variant carrying more ammo, and the MOR. 2S1 GVOZDIKA.
  • Soviet Naval Infantry can also count on the ever-present MOR. BM-21-1 GRAD, although reworked on the Soviet Navy’s favored ZIL-131 chassis.

TANK
  • The Soviet brigade had only a single tank battalion, filled with nothing else but the MOR. T-55AM (with Bastion ATGM). These capable long-range tanks come in vanilla, MOR. T-55AMK leader (without ATGM), and the MOR. T-55AMV with reactive armor.
  • A few of the rare and iconic Soviet Navy-delegated, and highly advanced for their time, MOR. T-55AMD with Drozd active protection systems can also be deployed. This particular self-protection device, the first of its kind in the world, consists of tubes filled with explosive shrapnel, mounted on each side of the tank’s turret. A Doppler radar would detect incoming ATGMs and detonate the system in the direction of the projectile at very close range, destroying it before the tank could be engaged. The Drodz was quite effective in tests, and saw operational use, but did have two shortcomings: projectiles fired couldn’t be engaged again if the first self-defense shot was a miss; and friendly nearby infantry could be shredded and possibly killed by collateral damage of the grenade-like Drodz charges. Both elements will be faithfully represented in WARNO.
  • The division’s arsenal will also include MOR. TO-55 to attack any enemy fortification with flamethrowers.
  • Anti-tank units featured are the usual MOR. MT-12 RAPIRA and MOR. BRDM-2 KONKURS.

REC
  • A pretty good category, with the foot soldiers making up the following units:
    • MOR. RAZVEDKA, which are 4-man recon teams with AKS-74 and one RPK-74, plus RPG-22.They can deploy in an MAV or MI-2T.
    • The DESANT. MOR. RAZVEDKA, a 6-man team with AKS-74 and RPG-7VM, plus the Airborne trait.
    • KHOLUY which are 6-man sneaky frogmen special forces teams with AKS-74, one SVD and RPG-26, and carrying the Special Forces and GSR trait.
  • Recon vehicles include the MOR. BRDM-2 and MOR. PT-76B.
  • Airborne intel is provided by the Mi-14PL with Exceptional Optics.
AA
  • A classic Soviet affair, with the MOR. IGLA in both "wet" and "airborne" variants.
  • The MOR. BIRYUSA and the MOR. MT-LB STRELA-10M will also be deployable.

HEL
  • Rather average, and while the brigade was intended to have a complement of Ka-27 and Ka-29 helicopters, delivery had been lagging in favor of the Northern Fleet. By 1989, the 336-ya OG Brigada Morskoy Pekhoty only managed to get a few, represented in WARNO by several Ka-29 gunships (few, but well armed) occupying a limited number of slots that quickly ramp up in costs.

AIR
  • A very good category. Air support is provided by regular Warsaw Pact air forces, with Denmark being only a few minutes away from Poland and East Germany at afterburner combat speeds.
  • This means the MiG-21MST and the MiG-23MLD provide air cover.
  • Close air support is given by the Su-17M4 and the Su-24M in a large array of RKT, CLU, HE, NPLM, LGB and SEAD loadouts.
  • And a newcomer: used in a conventional “carpet bombing” role, just to blast the Danish shores at the point of invasion, a few super-heavy Tu-22 [HE] will be available, as well as its Tu-22KDP [EW] unarmed electronic warfare variant.

The Soviet 336-ya Otdel’naya Gvardeyskaya Brigada Morskoy Pekhoty is a well-trained and regarded naval infantry division tasked with spearheading the amphibious assault on contested shores. Strong infantry, capable tanks, and a potent air force make up the division’s offensive firepower on the battlefield.
