Still Wakes the Deep News

Still Wakes the Deep fixes the worst feature in modern gaming

Recently, the Resident Evil 4 Remake sparked discussion around the prevalence of yellow paint in videogames. As a journalist who both reviews and guides games pre-embargo, before there's any guidance out there on how to progress, I like the bright splatters pointing me in the right direction. But for those of you who can't stand it, new indie horror game Still Wakes the Deep is going to be adding an option to reduce the amount of spilled paint markers that appear throughout your playthrough.

Still Wakes the Deep review - low on scares, big on heart

Christmas has come early. Christmas 1974, to be precise, and Caz McLeary has just received an ultimatum from his wife. This domestic affair to Still Wakes the Deep is pulled straight from developer The Chinese Room's narrative playbook, and the studio's return to horror is as welcome as it is long overdue. Even its landmark releases - Dear Esther and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture - conjure up an unease analogous to a horror or thriller. However, instead of a remote Hebridean island or a quaint Shropshire village, this latest offering transports players to one of the most primordial places on Earth: the middle of the North Sea.

Game Preview round-up. The love is real.

Two weeks ago, members of the press got to play the first two hours of Still Wakes the Deep. The reviews are in, and well, we couldn't be more pleased...

"Every so often, there's a horror game that manages to get the balance of beautiful, intriguing, and horrifying just right - Still Wakes the Deep is exactly that." - PC Gamer

"The Chinese Room appears to be firing on all cylinders here - they’re on the cusp delivering another masterpiece of gaming horror." - Xbox News

"Still Wakes The Deep was never going to be a journey of sunshine and rainbows, but I'm fascinated by how well Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 developer studio The Chinese Room executes its claustrophobic hide-and-seek gameplay in such a unique setting." - GamesRadar

"Still Wakes The Deep could well end up being one of those memorable games that makes you ask, ‘Why hasn’t anybody done this before?" - Play Magazine

"That cross-disciplinary line is the moment it all clicks for me, actually. There are scares here, clever set-pieces, , but it's the cross-disciplinary Design, the way Art and Sound and Level creation come into play that make it so special." - Eurogamer

And a brilliant Preview video on PlayStation Access:

Alec Newman is our Caz! | Voice Cast Reveal

Leading the Voice cast of our game as the main character is Alec Newman as Cameron "Caz" McLeary - an accomplished Glaswegian actor with a long history of video game performances. Cyberpunk 2077 fans may recognise him as the voice behind Adam Smasher in both the game and anime.
"The thing was so well written, and so well-conceived, that I don't recall having very long conversations about what Caz should sound like," says Newman in the mini-documentary, discussing what struck him about Still Wakes the Deep. "With this, you can feel the writing, you can feel the characters."
