Bramble World Creation Process: The Tiny Gnomes

Hello everyone,

Today we want to give you a little heads up about what we’ve been working on in the last month or so. A little sneak peek of our current and latest work so that you can see how Bramble is progressing. So let’s go!

One of the main things that we've been working on recently has been these little creatures that inhabit the forest - the tiny gnomes.

You will come across these lovable folks on your journey. When you come across them, they will ask you for a little favour (little gnomes only ask for little favours. Nothing big here, oh no!). Without going into too many spoilers, you will have to help them to reach their destination. They will follow your steps and follow your lead. They pretty much put their trust in you. Hopefully you will be able to repay their faith.

To bring these gnomes to life, we were working a lot on their AI/behaviour. We want to make sure that they will follow your steps, and that they move in unison - not in chaos. And while we’re on the subject of walking, we’ve also worked on their animations and general look too.

Although they have short legs, they are fast enough to follow your lead.

Without giving away too much - the gnomes will have their own village too! Over the last weeks, we were creating their little houses for them to live in. We want the village to look alive, vibrant. So for this reason, we are working on many of the details to make that happen. One of those details is that each house will have a little chimney from which smoke will come out. I wonder what kind of delicacies they cook there, or maybe they are just cold and want to get warm? Who knows…

Working on such details takes a lot of time. But, in our opinion, little details like that are worth it. Hopefully it will all add to make the world of Bramble a very unique and atmospheric place to be in. We can’t wait to show you more things from it in the future.

Speaking of the future, we are preparing something special that we will reveal in a couple of weeks, so stay tuned! That’s all we can say for the time being.

So, let us know what you think of the gnomes in the comments below! Always keen to hear your thoughts.

Until next time when we speak soon,

Your Dimfrost Studio

Who you’ll meet: Näcken, The Dancing Fool

Hello my Dear,

It’s time for a little story about one of the creatures of Bramble. Is he worth fearing, or does he not pose a threat? Sit back my dear, let me tell you about a man known as the Nacken.

Is it my imagination? Is my head playing tricks?
Why is it so hard for me to resist?

What a piece of music, what a tune coming from these depths.
I just want to bounce, follow it, and rest.

Nacken, The Dancing Fool

He once was just an ordinary, but troubled, soul who just wanted to share his love for music with the whole world. Although an ordinary man, he wasn't considered “normal” amongst the local town folks. As a child, he often broke out into dance every time he heard music walking down the streets, and inevitably got the nickname “The Dancing Fool”. Ever since he has been mocked by the people of the town, his hate towards them has been growing steadily. He slowly became more and more isolated with only his love for music keeping him company. Music became his sanctuary.

One day, our ordinary man needed to get out of his isolated home to get some food from the town he had rejected for so long. He needed to silence his hunger. And apart from delicious food, there was one other thing in that God forsaken place that he actually looked forward to - a beautiful, angelic-like girl managing the food stand. She had always been warm and kind towards him, even if others in the village were not. So he took the courage, ventured out, but it wasn’t too long before he started getting harassed and beaten by the people in town. They repeatedly yelled at him to dance like the fool he is. And suddenly, something broke inside this ordinary man. Hehad had enough of the put downs, and he craved revenge. He picked himself up and told the beautiful woman by the food stand not to come to the town by the end of two weeks from now.

During these two weeks he was practicing his violin, neglecting any other health needs, slowly deteriorating and submerging into his own music. He needed to suffer to succumb to the power that music could give him. When the two weeks passed, he went into town with only one goal in mind - vengeance. Once he reached the town square, people started to gather around him. He picked up his violin and before anyone could approach him he started playing. When the music started, all the people in the town began to dance, uncontrollably. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t stop. Eventually, they all danced themselves to death. Our now not so ordinary man was so lost in playing his violin that, when he eventually stopped playing, all he could see were piles and piles of dead bodies around him. His vengeance was complete. What he wasn’t prepared to see was that the beautiful girl from the food stand was also amongst the dead. Although he asked her not to come to town that day, it seems she didn’t listen - and he didn't notice. With a huge amount of guilt and pain in his heart, he left the town for good to wander off deep into the woods, and all he carried with him was his violin.

If you hear a sweet tune in the woods, it could be the Nacken playing your last song…

I will tell you another story soon my Dear. Now it’s time for bed. And whatever you do, do not go into the forest at night.

Sweet dreams,

Dimfrost Studios

Creatures of the Forest

Creatures wandering, of dark woe
Friend or Foe, I do not know.

So watch your step and tread with care
Keep alert, and beware.

Hello everyone,

Are you ready to meet more creatures who lurk within the forest, hidden amongst the trees? Learn who will be a friend to you, and who you must be wary of? Will they cause harm or help? Only time will tell...

As mentioned before, some have origins in, or are inspired by Nordic folk tales, which we hope to show you more of over the coming months and share with you the rich history of our Nordic folklore and legends.

These dark, fearsome creatures have been brought to life by our Lead Artist Ellinor Morén, with her concept art featured in this update.

For now, a small glimpse into more of the creatures of the forest, all waiting for you to wander into their lands...

The Pinecone People are a tribe of small, mischievous creatures. These tiny inhabitants of the forest are mostly harmless to you, and you will meet many of them along your journey through the forest. They praise their leader through a ritualistic dance, and although not dangerous, they can be a bit annoying.

KärrHäxan, once a midwife and owner of an orphanage in the swamp, the local villagers accused her of being a witch and burned her and the orphanage down. She now spends her days as a protector of the deceased children of the swamp. Although her story is tragic, her heart still knows how to love.

Grey Dwarfs are a primitive and evil group of dwarfs living among poorly built red wooden structures. Be wary of them. They are not the friendliest creatures you’ll meet on your travels.

The Bramble Mare are dark creatures made up of bramble and the evil that seeps throughout the whole forest. They live on the negative energy that surrounds all living creatures.

There are more creatures to come, with more stories to tell, you will be hearing from us again soon.

And remember, do not venture into the forest at night.

Regards,

Your Dimfrost Team.

Monsters, Creatures, and Oddities

Shhh…
Who is that over there in the dark?
Watching every step, eyes bright like a spark.

Shhh…
Is it my enemy or my friend?
It is hard to tell, but I won’t be afraid.

Hello everyone,

In this update, we want to tell you all about the characters that you saw in our trailer and which you will meet on your adventure. The forest hides many secrets, and one of them is its inhabitants. What are they like, what can we expect from them, and how did they get there in the first place? Well, let’s find out!

All of our creatures either have their origins in, or are inspired by, Nordic legends and tales. We are a Swedish studio, and all of us grew up on these stories told by our parents and grandparents. Bramble is a small tribute to these tales, a little glimpse into our childhood. It’s also our way of sharing these stories with the rest of the world.

Here are three creatures that you met in our trailer, in a bit more detail.

Näcken - he is a male spirit living in the water. Depending on which part of Nordics you are, his story is slightly different. One thing that’s in common is that he plays enchanted songs on his violin to lure you in. Be careful of his melody. Although it sounds sweet, the end will be bitter.

Lemus - this creator is a figment of our imagination in the studio. Although not directly lifted from Nordic legends, it was inspired by a John Bauer painting, specifically this one here! Don't worry, this creature is not a threat to you. He is one of the few friendly faces you will meet in this dangerous world.

Rumpnissar - they are little residents of the forest. They're tiny, cute, and you don’t need to be afraid of them. If you can, take good care of them too.

These are just some of the inhabitants of this wild enchanted forest. There are many more that you will meet on your way. But remember - not everything and everyone in Bramble is your friend.

Regards,

Your Dimfrost Team
