AGE OF PHOTOGRAPHY UPDATE
Good day Newsbearers!
The cameras are flashing, the ink is drying, and today the 'Age of Photography' update enhances your 1930s newsroom experience in News Tower!

With this update, your newsroom gets an exciting makeover, adding depth and new challenges that breathe fresh life into your journalistic empire.
Here’s why you should jump back in:
• Exciting new roles: Bring on board photographers, cartographers, and illustrators to give your newspaper a visual edge. These roles open up new strategies and opportunities to boost your paper's appeal and profitability.
  • Reader's Perception system: Shape your newspaper’s identity! Will you be a sensational tabloid or a reputable source of in-depth news? Your choices now impact subscriber loyalty and your paper's long-term success.
  • New year, new stories: Experience the events of 1933 with an enriched narrative that includes both historical and fictional news, making each edition more compelling than ever.

To fully appreciate these updates, we highly recommend starting a new game with the tutorials enabled. They'll guide you through the new features step-by-step, ensuring you make the most of these exciting additions!
Important information regarding your saves
The game should clearly state that your previous saves are incompatible with this new update due to the numerous additions and changes we had to implement.
However, here is what you need to know about this topic, just in case!

You will:
  • Have to create a new game and new save with this update.
You will not be able to:
  • Continue playing with your old saves - that means both the saves from the previous build on the main branch AND the saves from the Community Test Build.
However, we are creating a legacy branch that you can switch to if you want to finish the game you had going on in the previous build.
It will be accessible to everyone at the same time as this update goes live, and you can use it to continue your ongoing games. This branch will not be updated in the future - it is only here so you can finish your current games :)
KEY ADDITIONS

IMAGE PRODUCTION CHAIN

Your newspaper is getting a massive upgrade!
•
Photographer - Can add a picture to news item (Gold tag)
• Photographer desk - This is where the photographer sits when it’s not assigned to a news item. Similar to how reporter desks work.
    • Darkroom - Unique to photographs. When the photographer comes back from a news item, he/she develops the negatives into a “real” photograph. The darkroom can not be under a regular light. There is a red development light available as a buff item.
    • Repro Camera - “Scans” the photo into a format that can be used by the engraver for creating the printable image.
    • Engraver - Makes a printable “mold” of the image. After this step the graphic is ready to be assembled.
    • Assembler - As with any item that can be placed in the newspaper, the final step is the assembler.
  •
Cartographer - Can add a map to news item (Silver tag)
• Cartographer desk - This is where the cartographer sits when it’s not assigned to a news item. Similar to how reporter desks work.
    • The cartographer chain is similar to the photo chain, except that it does need to go into the darkroom.
  •
Illustrator - Can add an illustration to ads (extra money)
• Illustrator desk - This is where the illustrator sits when it’s not assigned to a news item. Similar to how reporter desks work.
    • The illustrator chain is similar to the photo chain, except that it does need to go into the darkroom.
Here is a quick look of an image production chain in our news tower!!
NEW (BUFF) OBJECTS:

  • Photographer desk: Camera Cabinet, Camera Cleaning Kit, Camera Tripod
  • Darkroom Technician: Chemicals Cabinet, Development Light, Dry Mount Press, Blackout Curtains
  • Repro Camera / Photoprocessor: Sharpness Chart, Wet Plate Rack, Blackout Curtains
  • Engraver: Drying Oven, Engraving Equipment, White Coat Rack
  • Illustrator: Desk Pencils, Paint Can Cabinet, Painting Easel
  • Cartographer: Drafting Triangles, Map Cabinet, Telescope, World Map
  • Sweeping: Sweeping Tools, Big Trash Can (already existed but now buffs sweeping)
  • Editor: Dictionary Books, File Cabinet, Issue Board, Paper Cutter
READERS' PERCEPTION
We are introducing a new mechanic called “Perception”. It’s about how your readers perceive your newspaper. You can be a “Sensational” newspaper, focusing more on fast, tabloid style news. Or an “Informational” newspaper, with more in depth coverage. The middle ground is also possible and it’s called “Moderate”.

We are laying a foundation to build upon in future updates, where perception will play a big role in long term planning, rivaling newspapers and other interesting mechanics.
With this update, its main focus is gathering subscribers.

Some of the tags that you will encounter have a “Perception side” associated with them. For example, the “Gossip” tag, skews your perception towards Sensational.

When you assemble your newspaper, the total perception value gets summed for the articles, and that determines the character of your newspaper.

Every week, the public perception gets nudged towards the character of your latest print. This moves rather slowly, simulating the real world where public perception doesn’t change overnight.

A big change that comes with this new mechanic is that the subscribers you gather from completing districts are no longer subscribers directly. Instead, they become “Potential” subscribers. They have gotten to know your newspaper based on the character of your latest edition. In order for them to subscribe, you have to be consistent in your newspaper’s character. The potential subscribers remember the character of your newspaper, and if you stay consistent, they will become subscribers after a couple of weeks.

Every perception “side” (Sensational, Moderate, Informational) has a distinct set of negative tags associated with them. For example, if the perception of your newspaper is Sensational, readers may find certain stories boring. With this update, you will probably not notice this as the content that utilizes this is still a work in progress.

Reader's Perception gets introduced and unlocked after you’ve completed 12 districts on the N.Y.C. map. Before it is unlocked, the subscriber system works the same as before.

Again, this update is laying the foundation of this mechanic. Expect more in-depth and interesting mechanics using the perception system in future updates.
1933
For the Community Test version, the content of this news is still placeholder content.
For the full release, the news will utilize a mix of events that truly happened in 1933 and some fake events we created to give additional content.
The new content also uses the new graphic chain items like photographs, illustrations and maps.

What about scores then?

Scores that were made with an older version of News Tower aren’t valid anymore. We’ve added so much new content that it doesn’t make sense to compare old scores with the new ones.
SMALLER ADDITIONS

AD BOYCOTT
You’ve printed something controversial and the ad companies aren’t too happy with that.
You will be punished and get only partial, or no ad deals at all!
AD QUALITY SYSTEM
With the addition of the illustrator, you can now make higher quality ads that contain illustrations. An illustrated ad is unlocked if you hit the top tier (8) in a given category.
AREA MAP LEGEND
Visible from january 1930, the area map legend helps you navigate the map. It shows you where all of the upgrades in a given category can be found.
IMPROVEMENTS & CHANGES

EDITOR
• Text (copy) editor and graphic editor remove all pre-production nags.
    • The editor was undercooked in previous versions. With this update, the editor removes all negative tags from an item. (Except for sloppy production and old news, because this can happen after the editor by for example a sloppy typesetter).
    • Negative tags now have a larger sales penalty, so in most cases it makes sense to edit those negative tags out. This is of course at the cost of longer production times…
    • You have to manually enable the editor in the reporting menu itself. It will appear as a checkbox beneath the story file.
    • Enabling the editor later is also possible via the right drawer. Click on the small diamond that represents the editor to toggle it on and off. Note that once the item has passed the editing stage, it is not possible to toggle it anymore.
    • Editor can be enabled directly on the story file (if applicable). Default is OFF for now.
MISCELLANEOUS
• Added numerous new sound effects and ambience sounds.
  • Newspaper x3 and x2 slots instead of only the above the fold
  • Toggle all notifications at once can be done with N by default
BUG FIXES
• Fixed tower score recording ad revenue and newspaper sales profit a week behind
  • Fixed employees picking an occupied side at the coffee machine
  • Chain bubble log overhauled where it's now a separate root like Rush Mode brains and no longer interferes with employee logs
  • Various minor fixes

Community Test Build
Welcome and gather 'round, newsbearers and aspiring media moguls of the roaring 1930s!
The presses are rolling, the news is hot off the wire, and today the 'Community Test Build' branch is now OPEN!

As you continued showing your unwavering enthusiasm for News tower, we have worked hard to make this playtest happen.
In this initial phase, we are testing many new additions and improvements and are gathering your feedback and opinion on it to improve it as much as we can before we release it on the main branch.
You can find a detailed list of what is implemented in this community test below!
Here's everything you need to know:

What's included in the Community Test Build?
• Reader's Perception: This is a brand new system that will be detailed in the changelog below. The key point here is that it will be unlocked once you have obtained 12 districts. We will keep improving and enriching this system with future updates.
  • Image Production Chain: This new production chain lets you add a cartographer, photographer, and illustrator to your team. We have also added a bunch of buff items for the new equipment in this production chain!
  • Last but not least as one says, we have also added a whole new in-game year: 1933. This should give you plenty of time to enjoy all the new features we've included in this update.

These new features are thoroughly explained in the game's tutorials. We highly recommend starting a new game "with an introduction" to fully understand and explore them. The tutorials will guide you step-by-step, ensuring you make the most of these additions!

Keep in mind this is a preview build, and as such, much will still have to be improved. This is also why we ask for your help!

Join the "Community Test Build" channels on the Discord to share your feedback on this playtest: https://discord.gg/V9ZRjXaq
Why a Community Test Build?
First off, we think the reader's perception system is going to be a game-changer, and we want to share it with you as soon as possible. This new system also changes how you gain subscribers, impacting the revenue your newspaper generates, which required some rebalancing in the game. We're eager to hear what you all think about it.
Since perception and the new production chain add more complexity to the game, we've added tutorials at different points to explain them. We've tweaked these tutorials internally, but now we want to see how they work for the players, you!

Your feedback during this testing phase will play a crucial role in shaping the final version - so thank you!
How do I join the Community Test Build branch on Steam?
To access the "Community Test Build" branch, simply follow these steps:

  1. Open the Steam client.
  2. Click on the "Library" tab.
  3. Right-click on "News Tower" and select "Properties".
  4. Click on the "Betas" tab.
  5. In the "Beta participation" field, select "community_test".
  6. Click on the "Close" button.
  7. The game will now be updated to the "community_test" branch.

You're in! :)
Important information regarding your saves
The game should clearly state that your saves are incompatible - however here is what you need to know in case!

You will not be able to:
  • Continue playing with your old saves in this Community Test Build. It will allow you to access the content of the next update we're working on.
  • Load a save of the Community Test version into the Live build available on the default branch.
KNOWN ISSUE
• To bring the new image production chain to life, we've added a bunch of new news items that include images, illustrations, or maps. We haven't had time to write all of them yet, so you might see some news items with placeholder titles and subtitles. This shows just how fresh our version is!

Patch v0.13.28.r
GOOD MORNING to all and to everyone else as well!
This patch brings a new batch of fresh improvements and fixes.
Check it below!
IMPROVEMENTS

User Interface
• The main menu has been updated:

    • Improvements to the Load menu:
      • The game versions a save was created in is now displayed.
      • Autosaves are now displayed next to the corresponding game.
      • The month is now also displayed.
    • A new “Score” menu has been added, allowing players to review their past score screens shown at the end of December 1932.
    • The Settings menu has been revamped.
  • The Score screen at the end of December 1932 now displays the “Total Net Earnings” graph.
  • In-game hamburger menu has a new style.
Elevators
• Elevators are weighted better now, employees chose their path more wisely regarding stairs or elevator. An elevator becomes more attractive the more floors an employee has to travel. If an employee only has to go one floor, taking the stairs is often preferable (but not always, depending on how close the elevator is to the target).
  • Elevator doors close faster.
Audio
• Audio added for: Newsbook opening, the unlock of story files, UI tracing links for both the Newsbook and the Area Map, and when employees level up.
Miscellaneous
• Silver tags don’t appear before March 1930 anymore.
  • Trash discomfort range is a bit shorter.
  • Employee bubble for a lawsuit has a tooltip now that says “Lawsuit”.
  • AI regarding transportation has had a slight overhaul. Resupply can carry a max of 3 crates, > lv 3 = 2 crates, from level 9 is 3. This only applies to paper, coal, food and lawsuits.
  • An animation has been added for the floor addition.
FIXES
• We've implemented a change that prevents the same news article title from appearing twice in a single week. No more duplicate headlines!
  • Pressing space bar while changing employee name no longer pauses the game.
  • Protester guide icon displays "Protesters" as tooltip instead of Mobsters.
  • Bug fixed where the ad menu would block when it had multiple pages.
  • Fixed intro postcard input field getting selected after confirming newspaper name.
  • FMOD upgraded from 2.02.04 to 2.02.20, should fix the no sound issue some people reported.
  • Some minor issues regarding confirm dialogs have been fixed.
  • Fixed some animation glitches when an employee is holding an item.
  • Employees that were holding an item when the game got saved: when the game is loaded again, they would wander around without a goal at first, often dropping their items or taking a detour. This should be fixed now.
  • Fixed the annoying automatic desk pickup when selecting an object while zoomed out pretty far
  • Fixed the 15th floor crash. Max floors is 31 now and the crash will never happen because adding gets blocked.
  • Various minor fixes.

Hotfix v0.12.107.r
Hello hello to all newsbearers above and beyond!
Today we are implementing this hotfix to address the problem where in certain situations the loading and saving of a game will take a very long time. If your game was affected by this, saving it again with this patch should solve the issue.

This issue was reported to us respectively by both KnightModern and Cueball on Discord:
"After turn 30+, it's way longer to save the playthrough, load the save, and advance to the next week, sometimes it's crashed when trying to save and the new save became corrupted."

"I dunno why I'm still playing, but I'm on Day 67, and saving the game is getting laggy."

Thanks to you both!

Btw that's an excellent opportunity to remind you that the team and devs are present on the official News Tower Discord so if you want to ask or share anything with us, head on over there! You will be welcomed warmly :)

Cheers and until next time in the Tower!

UPDATE #2 - Endless Mode is available now!
Good day to all newsbearers, and to the others too!
After about a week of testing the Endless mode on a dedicated beta branch, we are happy to announce that it is releasing on the default branch of the main game for all to enjoy today!
A special thanks to all of you who participated in the test and sent us precious feedback that allowed us to release it for everyone this fast.

Please note, this new mode features randomized news items and lacks the score tracking and historical precision of the main game!
Although the gameplay balance in Endless Mode may shift, know that we are diligently improving the quality of this game mode during Early Access.

Below a list of all additions, improvements and fixes added to the main branch following this week of beta testing on the preview build.
Many of these elements were already implemented in the preview build and are simply now being put on the main branch - some others are newly added!
ADDITIONS

End of run recap screen
• After you print your December 1932 issue, a new screen will recap your newspaper’s achievements. It shows data such as your record sales numbers, your staff levels or even how many districts you unlocked.
  • While this screen appears even though you complete a run started on a previous version, some data will be missing (perfect district unlocks, tags colours).
  • For the time being, this screen is only shown once, and the game doesn’t allow you to review it after the end of your run. We are working on a solution for this. In the meantime, make sure you grab a screenshot if you want to show it around!
Endless Mode Preview Build
• After that recap screen, you will have the option to return to the main menu or to continue playing the game in 'Endless Mode'.
  • The 'Endless Mode' allows you to continue conquering NYC and developing your tower without any time constraint or limit.
  • Please note that 'Breaking News' are not implemented in the that game mode. News items that you will report on in this mode may also be historically inaccurate and more generic.
Printer
• Added a 5th printer module that can be purchased at the Industry City Harbor for 64 Influence points.
Tutorial Hints
• Added a tutorial hint that explains items prioritisation in the Article Drawer.
  • Added a tutorial hint that explains comfort items diminishing returns (e.g. multiple clocks are not the best way to improve comfort).
IMPROVEMENTS

Elevator
• The operation of the elevator has been significantly improved.
  • It will alternate up and down and pick everybody up along the way. It will let people out on the floors they want to go to.

    Explanation:
Imagine there are elevator doors on floors 1 through 4. If there are three reporters waiting on floor 1, each destined for floors 2, 3, and 4 respectively, the elevator will now efficiently pick them up in sequence, stopping at each designated floor in order.

Previously, the elevator would have gone directly all the way up to floor 4, causing delays for passengers bound for intermediate floors. For instance, an employee wanting to go to floor 2 would have experienced a significant wait before reaching their floor.

This issue was also exacerbated when additional passengers joined the journey, further prolonging the travel time for everyone.
Production chain
• We've enhanced the process for managing the "skipping" of the copy editor or re-inserting it into the production chain (via a simple click on the square on the article card in the drawer). In the previous and current version alike, you can remove the copy editor from the chain if it’s still on its way to the typesetter. However, previously, if you accidentally removed the copy editor, there was no way to reinsert it. With our latest update, you now have the flexibility to both remove and reinsert the copy editor as needed.
Miscellaneous
• Severe AI improvement for chain items! Walking time is now taken into account. Should cause much more logical decisions.

    Explanation:
It turns out that our AI wasn't factoring in travel time between workstations when deciding where to go. Instead, it was only considering the "level" of the stations and how many items were already being processed there.

This oversight sometimes led to the AI making illogical moves, wasting precious time in the process. But fear not! We've implemented a fix to address this issue. Now, the AI takes travel time into account when determining its path between workstations.

This fix should result in smoother and more efficient AI behavior, making your gameplay experience even better.

  • Taxis now honk when dropping off reporters coming back to the building.
  • Manually dropping items in storage slots no longer adjusts the camera view to encompass the whole inventory, making it easier to quickly manually drag items without the camera changing.
  • Bigger name pools, reducing the chances of duplicate names.
  • At least one discomfort icon is shown even on max zoom out level.
  • Security can now arrest up to 4 protesters at a time. This is dependent on its level (divided by four).
  • Intro postcards are now always skippable, even on first time playing.
FIXES
• Security Booth Z-sorting issue fixed where a door right next to it could pass through it.
  • Fixed printer next/previous page button (borders) sometimes not visible.
  • Fixed disappearing quest/district picked indicators. Which could happen in rare cases (but this was only visual, not game breaking).
  • Fixed "increased by" expense entry showing 100% increase with 0 value.
  • Fixed an exploit where stashing and unstashing would reset the objects durability value (broken/cleanness).
  • Spelling corrections that were pointed out on Discord.
KNOWN ISSUES
• Total Net Earnings section of the Recap Screen: the calculation behind this section is incorrect and displays inaccurate information.
