Age of Wonders 4 - Wolf 1.2 Update



Ferocious Godir,

I regret to inform you that I was forced to leave after the pack of Lupine discovered I was nothing more than a Halfling in a wolf's coat. Since then I’ve come across a herd of Goatkin, having a picnic in a lush field. These marvelous creatures seem to have a particular taste for nature. I’ve seen whole Trees being consumed without as much as a drop of sweat.

Today’s update, which comes slightly off schedule, aims to tackle some of the feedback we’ve received following the release of Primal Fury and the Wolf Update. Most importantly we’ve decided, after reading through the feedback and looking at what we want from the hero system, to remove the Leadership Clash. We will revisit this later on as part of a bigger look at the roles heroes play in armies and how they develop.

  • Removed the Leadership Clash
  • Implemented AI Hero Recruitment Cooldown
    • The cooldown scales based on the difficulty settings for that individual AI. From 5 Turns on Very Easy to 1 Turn on Very Hard.
  • The Conjure Primal Animal spells will now only appear as research after you completed your first Tome of Magic


AI
  • Fixed issue where the AI would not always commit to a conquering a city after the walls has been breached


Art
  • Fixed an issue with incorrect Lighting being used in Events

  • Fixed an issue with Animation Blending on Mounted Ranged abilities

  • Fixed an issue where, once built, a province couldn’t be swapped to a Farm if the player has Desolate Adaptation or is of the Sabertooth Primal Culture.
  • Fixed an issue where Army Race Customization was not getting saved properly
  • Fixed an issue where the Dragon Ruler Affinity would not resolve correctly


Item Forge
  • Fixed an issue with Polearms in the Item Forge allowing Giant Slayer Infusion while they already have Giant Slayer inherently.
  • Fixed an issue with the Blowgun, Crossbow and Bow in the Item Forge not having the correct preferred attack.
  • Fixed an issue where Item Forge and premade Staves were not getting the correct damage channels.


Interface
  • Disabled the Log Out button while inside of a Multiplayer Session
  • Fixed an issue where Misc Items would always select the first slot
  • Fixed an issue where you could open the Mage Haven info panel on controller while hovering over pantheon heroes that could not be edited.
  • Fixed a crash that could sometimes occur when entering the Create a Bounty panel when there is a Beacon of Unity bounty target.
  • Fixed a crash that could occur due to the Quest Overview remaining open.
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when an outpost was being converted to a city but a player would have the city interface open.
  • Fixed a crash that could occur while keeping the city interface open at the start of a new turn
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when the quest overview was being updated while the panel was obscured/hidden.
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when the quest overview would remain open but hidden if the “Create a Bounty” sub panel was open when clicking a notification/opening a different panel.


Hero Skills
  • Fixed an issue where having the Avatar of Primal Animal would remove Primal Communion if you are a Wizard King or a Dragon Lord.
  • Fixed an issue where Crossbows did not benefit from Searing Weapons


Multiplayer
  • Fixed an issue where the game could get stuck without a combat result screen after replaying the same combat twice.
  • Fixed a common crash when combat ends and the world map is out of sync.


Pantheon
  • Fixed an issue where realms using Presence Traits that add additional cities would all be named Flotsam.
  • Fixed an issue where Ascended Rulers would sometimes get linked up to the wrong default ruler causing them to receive incorrect (visual) settings.
  • Fixed an issue where Ascended default Rulers would not always receive an Ascension trait.
  • Fixed an issue where it was not possible to delete a Ascended Ruler if they were invalid
  • Fixed an issue where the Main Menu would not be visible after a completed game fails to save to the Pantheon
  • Fixed an issue where Pantheon Realms would appear as a Unlockable Reward
  • Fixed an issue where the quest line for the Frozen Realm Frost Queen would not trigger.


Spells
  • Fixed an issue where Unleash Beast would not give the Berserk status effect properly
  • Fixed an issue where Desecrate Structure would not stop if the province was razed or the city changed owner.
  • Fixed an issue where Gremlin Ambushers would only last 10 turns.
  • Fixed an issue where Bind Ancient Wonders would not be removed if the structure was occupied or the city owner changed.


Units
  • Enfeebling Howl from the White Wolf unit and mount can no longer affect friendly units.
  • Mistlings will no longer teleport away when they retaliate to incoming melee attacks
  • Primal Darter can no longer use disengaging shot on the water
  • Fixed Siege Towers not acting during Combat


World Map
  • Fixed an issue where Bind Golden Ancient Wonder would not properly add +50 Knowledge income to the city it is annexed to.
  • Cultural Marauders (Bandit Stacks) can no longer have Primal culture enchantments as they were spawning multiple of different subcultures. We will be investigating this issue and hope to have it only gain one Primal unit enchantment in the future.
  • Fixed an issue where post-combat rewards not being provided properly upon completion.
  • Fixed an issue where random hexes on the World Map would fully heal your army
  • Fixed an issue where armies would not be pushed out of the City Walls when the city was taken over by another player
  • Fixed an issue where the Ritual of Alacrity would remove queue Production
  • Fixed an issue where Traits would incorrectly apply/count Outposts
  • Fixed an issue where non-visibile Reinforcing Armies would not join Combat
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when a unit gets temporarily transformed upon death and then permanently transformed.

Hello Everyone!

It’s been a week since Primal Fury released and we’re happy to see how much everybody has been enjoying the Content Pack & Update. As you might have seen in the General Discussions the new Leadership Clash has been a bit off a hot topic. We’ve read through the feedback and have come up with a couple of changes to tackle the concerns raised.

We’ll be making the following changes to the Leadership Clash:
  • Leadership Clash only applies between Heroes. This means that you can have your Ruler and a Hero in the same stack without penalties.
  • Leadership Clash will now apply to AI Rulers. This applies to any Ruler versus Ruler Combat, in battles against the Independents the effects will be disabled.
  • Hero Acquisition Cooldown. AI Rulers will no longer be able to hire multiple Heroes in the same turn. The duration of the Cooldown will depend on the difficulty of the AI. (Not implemented yet)

It’s important to understand that there’s little time for us to address feedback regarding these changes. We can make changes/tweaks until Thursday 7th End of Day (17.00 CET) so if you have any feedback please give it sooner rather than later.

  • The AI will now suffer penalties from Leadership Clash, however to compensate for the AI really not understanding it very well, these penalties will be disabled when it enters auto-combat vs independents

It has been two days since I joined the pack of Lupine living deep in these forests. They have been participating in a wild celebration of excitement and frustration and I have been witness to it all.

With today’s update we’re tackling some of the most immediate issues that have been reported. You’ll notice some requested tweaks to the World generation as well as fixes for Rulers not Transforming and potential soft locks.

  • Added information about heroes being returned to their original owner on creating an alliance/vassalage between two rulers to the trade options and alliance encyclopedia entry.
  • Disabled the Increase Hero Cap button from showing in the Hero Recruit screen if the Hero Cap has not been reached.

  • Updated the Barbarian Culture description to mention their new Savage Strike mechanic

  • Fixed an issue where low units such as the Slither Hatchling would not show properly in Events

  • Nimue no longer has talking magelock cannons

Free Cities
  • Fixed an issue where the Masters of Creation Upgrade Set would not provide the +6 Materium Affinity Hero Trait
  • Fixed an issue where targeting Rulers through War Coordination would show their Throne City Location on the World Map while not having discovered it

  • Fixed a crash that occurred when the player ended their turn with the “Wizard Tower: Room of Recall” set to dismantle in one turn and the spell casting interface of the spell “Recall Ruler” open.

Multiplayer
  • Fixed an issue where the combat screen would not reopening after leaving a multiplayer game during combat replay
  • Fixed a common Out of Sync that could occur after hotjoining
  • Fixed an issue where a player in classic turns multiplayer would get the Pantheon XP screen before the Defeat Screen if defeated out of turn.

  • Fixed an issue with Presence Traits that give Rulers additional Cities not using Cities of their own Race

  • Fixed an issue where the Pantheon Points would not reflect the accurate amount of Pantheon Points given.
  • Fixed an issue where the Mount Visualisations would not unlock from all connected nodes.

Astral Convergence
  • Fixed an issue where Explosive Manifestation could not be cast in Water Combat.


Chaos channeling
  • Fixed an issue where Golden Horde would not count as a Hostile Action

Enchantment
  • Fixed an issue where the increased damage from Purging Arrows wasn’t working on single attacks


Dreadnaught
  • Overcharged now triggers at the end of repeating attacks
  • Overcharge cannot be cast on constructs that are already overcharged


Zeal
  • Fixed an issue with the Bolstering Matrix granting its bonus twice when using Inspiring Chant to units with Zeal.


Reaper
  • Fixed an issue where Greater Reanimation would not work on non-undead enemy units.



World Map
  • Fixed an issue where Underground spawning would not take the surface player’s position into account properly on a 2 player map.
  • Fixed an issue where Terraforming Spells would not work on provinces with Small Mountains/Habitable Mountain Provinces
  • Fixed an issue where Primal Animals would wrongly appearing in some Maps
  • Fixed a crash that could occur while the City Interface was open as a Outpost turned into a City

New Forms: Lupine & Goatkin
Two new forms have joined the planes of existence. The beastly Lupine are beings which communicate through barks and howls. Trained in long distance running, they are exceptionally fast and adapt at surrounding and overrunning their enemies. Alongside these creatures of the forests we find the Goatkin. Graceful beings who take pride in their elaborate horns. They are vigorous and strong, true beacons of health with a knack for consuming plants to revitalize themselves.



New Culture: Primal

The Primal culture is animistic and in tune with the environment. Not every Primal Culture is the same, as each culture picks a Primal Animal that they worship. This Primal Animal dominates every facet of their physical and spiritual lives.
  • Pick one of 7 Primal Animals, each linked to a different terrain and damage type
  • Channel the Fury of your chosen Primal in combat for powerful buffs
  • Find the den of your chosen Primal on the world map and channel its power to Terraform the land.




New Tomes
Reach into the hidden powers of Nature with two new Nature Hybrid Tomes. War Bounties
None are safe with the brand new War Bounty System. War Bounties are public (re)quests akin to wanted posters that are sent out by Rulers. These requests target locations of strategic benefit such as Outposts, Cities and Victory Condition Structures along with a hefty reward for completion. Other Rulers can choose to accept a bounty and try to achieve it or they might tempt you into a War for the right reward. Work your way to Victory from the comfort of your Seat of Power through this new Diplomatic system.



Hero Recruitment
We have taken a look at how Heroes are recruited into your Empire and how they interact with each other. In this new version of Recruitment we've disconnected the Hero Cap from cities and gone back a bit to our earlier titles. Over the course of a game your Hero Cap will increase automatically, introducing Heroes to you over time or spend your Imperium to requisition one immediately. Alongside these changes comes a new interaction between Heroes that are part of the same Stack. Any stack that contains more than one hero will be subject to a Leadership Clash, the effects of which result in lower Morale and less Experience Gain.



Necromancy Overhaul
Necromancy has been reworked to provide a more satisfying and enjoyable experience. With changes to Necromancy Tomes, Souls generation and the inclusion of Post-Combat Raising we’ve created a more direct connection between the units you kill and the undead you raise. Raise Skeletal variants of Shield, Polearm, Archer and Battle Mage units as well as Monstrous creations like Bone Horrors and Bone Dragons to form petrifying armies.



Pantheon Expansion
The Pantheon has been expanded with a large update improving Tech, Flow and Gameplay aspects. Pantheon Management has been reworked and Rulers that join your Pantheon are now added to a separate Tab in Faction Selection. From here you can review your Rulers, make changes or add your newly unlocked Pantheon Rewards. At the end of a game Ascended Rulers have the option to pick an Ascension Trait, special traits available based on your Affinity and Tome choices during the game. They will also keep the Race Transformations that they cast and remember the Tomes you picked.

There’s also new content and not just for the Pantheon. The Godir’s Aid event has been expanded with Affinity & Alignment oriented Events to provide more opportunities for your Rulers to join a campaign. A new Hero Loadout, Nature Society Traits and Ruler Visuals have been added to the Pantheon Rewards, but the most exciting is the addition of 6 new Mount Skins that can be unlocked for your Ruler & Units to ride.



Quality of Life and more
The features above are only the highlights of what the Wolf Update has to offer, other big additions have been made to the game. A heavily expanded Free City experience graces your realms with tons of additional Tome Upgrade sets, brand new Culture Upgrade sets and improvements to the Rally of the Lieges. The Item Forge sees a slew of new Infusions that let you create even more varied pieces of Equipment, as well as Dragon Gauntlets for the fashion forward Dragon.

We’ve added new ways to live out your fantasy, for those that spend more time creating factions than playing them. Editing a Factions now provides the choice between Overwriting the existing ruler or making a Copy, which is key for when you want to update your Factions with Custom Throne City Names and Faction Biographies. To help you keep your Fantasy going you’re now able to toggle the visibility of any Unit Enchantment or Race Transformation that you’ve cast. Now venture out into Realms that you let create for you with the new randomize option and crawl through forests filled with Webs, Mushrooms and what not.
