We've Got New Key Art :)

Hey everyone!

I think it's fair to say that as a small studio, finding the time and budget to focus on things like key art and a fancy Steam page, when you're hard at work actually making a game, is challenging. With that in mind, I'm incredibly pleased to announce that we've managed to find an amazing artist in Daniele Lieske who has brought our vision for Clanfolk to life.

Key art (especially gorgeous key art) plays a huge part in gaining Wishlist's, folks viewing and visiting your Steam page, as well as capturing the imagination of those you're hoping to entice. We loved the principle of our old art (a family returning back to their homestead) but it simply didn't reflect the quality we were searching for.

What Daniele has so brilliantly captured is a focus on family, harvesting and your homestead, but also the looming spectre of winter. Having the scene divided by lush landscapes and barren snowy fields, with abandoned snow-bitten buildings in the east is exactly what we were after. Afterall, we all know most won't survive the winter...

Below you can find the early stages of the process, alongside our final version. We hope you love it as much as we do!
Second Draft (With Winter Added)

Third Draft (More Fidelity)

Final Art
As always, be sure to join our Discord, let your friends know and don't forget to Wishlist us!

Massive update released for the Clanfolk Demo!

Clanfolk Demo Upgrade Released

Hi everyone,

I am thrilled to finally update the Clanfolk Demo with all the new content that I have been working on. I want to give special thanks to the Discord community for tirelessly testing the beta versions over the last few months and providing great suggestions.

Please consider stopping by. We have a very friendly community, and I am on there daily taking notes :)
https://discord.com/invite/U6yztRSTxX

New World Building Controls
  • When starting a New Map, players can now choose to spend points to change the amount of Mountains, Lakes, Forests, Grassland, and Wildlife on the generated map.
  • Points need to be balanced, so highly increasing one slider, will mean a tough choice on what other ones to decrease.

Custom Clan Builder

  • After the map has been generated, you are now able to set up a family tree for your Clan to define the relationships between Clan members.
  • The Clan builder provides pre-built scenario family trees as well as a custom option where you can build up your Clan from a single baby, progressing time until they are a senior.
  • When building your Clan, you have initially have 2000 coin. This can be spent on Clan members (250 per member), on starting supplies, or be saved for later trading.
  • Each Clan member will have their own set of Quirks and Skills that develop as time passes in the Clan Builder.
  • Like/Dislike/Skill Affinity rework.
Each person will like one job, dislike another, and be good at a job. This will let you get a sense for their usefulness at a glance within the Clan builder.
  • Character Re-Roll added for that one lazy/wrong skilled Clan Member
(For a progressively increasing coin cost)

Quirks

  • Clanfolk now develop Quirks over time.
  • Quirks are situational behavior modifiers. For example, many children are afraid of the dark. This would mean that their rooms should be lit for better sleep.
  • Quirks can also be passive, for example having a high metabolism.
The Clanfolk eats more but also moves and works faster.
  • The quirk system is currently in a proof of concept phase with many more to come.

New Character Art

  • New Human art by a professional artist with many component variants to make each Clan member look unique!
  • Added a new character art system is highly mod friendly
  • Characters now are made of 15 layers
Bodies: Torsos, Heads, Hair, Eyes, Eyebrows, Beards, Mouths
Clothes: Hats, Hoods, Shirts, Jackets, Pants, Cloaks, Underwear, Plaid

New Creature Art

  • All Creature art has also been replaced to keep a consistent look.
  • New creature art is historically consistent with 1300's Scotland creatures.
  • The Coo has also been added. (Highland Cattle)

New Music
  • Two new songs from Michael Pflug our composer from SPAZ 2/Golftopia.
  • A flute song played by the Clanfolk in the mornings and evenings for fun
To be expanded to even more instruments to get a whole band going.

Contextual World Click

  • You can now click on any tile in the world and get a list of contextual options for it. So click on grass, get the harvest option. No more digging in the jobs menu to find what you need.

Meet the Neighbors

  • Surrounding Clans from different Biomes have been added!
  • Neighbor Clans will send Workers, Traders, and Visitors.
  • Workers: Can be hired for a daily coin wage
May end up joining the Clan if treated well enough.
  • Visitors: Will come seeking a warm meal and a bed for the night
Higher satisfaction will lead to improved relations with their Clan
  • Traders: Will bring Trade items from their Biome with the quantity and rarity based on relations with your Clan.

Desire Paths

  • The Desire Path system allows Clanfolk to slowly break paths in the grass over time as they move through an area.
  • These paths become good hints on where to build future roads.
  • As paths become more established, tall grass will be damaged, but the Clanfolk's movement speed will increase.
  • This increased movement speed will also make the path more desirable to Clanfolk and well established paths will slowly emerge.

New Clothing Sets Added

  • All Clothing has been added to the demo!
Sack Cloth, Hide, Leather, Wool, Linen variants.
  • Since it is Summer, only the linen clothing will be desirable for wearing, but since the Demo saves will work in the full game, having warm clothing ready to go for Fall and Winter is a smart move.

New Items Added

  • Bread, Cheese, CuredFlaxStems, Dough, Flax Fibers, Ashed Hides, Clean Hides, Leather, Linen Cloth, Linen Hank, Oat Flour, Clean Wool, Wool Cloth, Wool Hank, Bowl, Dirty Bowl, Brose, Butter, Stew.

New Objects Added

  • Bread Oven, Butter Churn, Cheese Press, Dish Rack, Dish Washer, Dough Table, Flax Dressing, Flax Retting, Kitchen, Loom, Quern, Spinning, Ash Tanning, Bark Tanning, Hide Scraper, Well, Wool Dressing

Going Forward

Now that this demo update is live, my main focus is getting everything ready for Clanfolk's Early Access launch.

Marketing is also going to get into full swing now, and if you can tell you friends about Clanfolk and get them to try the demo, that would be a huge help. Every Wishlist really counts and helps with visibility.

I will be posting to Steam more often, but you can always find me on Discord too. I am very open to ideas on how to improve Clanfolk further and interacting with players on Discord each day has been inspiring.

I hope you will give the demo a try!

Support Our IndieDev Friends! Black Geyser Launches Today!

As a small indie studio here at MinMax Games Ltd, we think it's incredibly important to support other small studios, so we thought we'd run our first cross promotion. Basically, it's our way of shining a line on another game we like the look of, which we think some of you might also like.

If you’ve ever played Baldur’s Gate or Icewind Dale, you’ll feel right at home in the old school Black Geyser. Developed by a small indie studio in Budapest, Hungary, it’s a love letter to those titans of the genre, with plenty of its own twists. Developed since 2015, backed on KickStarter and having entered into Early Access in August 2021, its launch is later today.

Black Geyser is set in Yerengal, a world where dark gods have brought nothing but venality and greed. For centuries, the Devil-god Rothgor has spread fear and terror, waging war upon the mortal races. Eventually banished, the nation of Isilmerald has enjoyed a time of peace and prosperity. Yet discontent has begun to fester once more, and a bloody civil war is brewing between the capital Isilbright and the wealthy mining town of Deron-Guld.

Like any classic isometric CRPG, life starts out at the character creator. There’s 5 playable races (Human, Dwarf, Elf, Feldegug and Rillow) and 13 unique classes, from 4 unique class groups (Priest, Outlaw, Warrior, and Wizard). Each plays completely different from the other and there’s enough here to suit all styles. After tinkering on the attribute screen (time to panic over those points!), you’re dropped into a world that’s plagued by pestilence and mysterious abductions. Without wishing to spoil the story, it’s your job to uncover the hidden legacy of your birth, across a world you’re free to explore.

Since its Early Access and over the last seven months, Black Geyser has taken the time to improve almost all areas of its game. The entire purpose of getting the game into the hands of players as soon as possible was clearly to refine its vision, identify problem areas and put them right. Having delivered over 20 huge updates, including Mac and Linux support, Black Geyser has made sweeping changes. From vastly improved loading times, to clearer player tutorials, improved crafting, new zones, enemies and questlines, the small development team have ensured they've focused on addressing and reacting to key player feedback.

As a CRPG with a large open world with dozens of unique locations, exploring, interacting with NPC’s and managing Black Geyser’s tactical-combat-with pause is key. Just like most party-based titles of old, you’ll need to recruit key allies, discover their motivations, choose your formations and deck them out in any weapons and armor you can lay your hands on, whether that’s from taking on epic bosses, or stealing from a nearby inn (just don’t get caught by the guards).

Black Geyser is undoubtedly a challenging experience, but first and foremost it puts its story and unique greed mechanic at the center. The choices you make will either advance the cause of the Goddess of Greed, or maintain the flame of hope to impact directly on the game world. Yerengal is brimming with content to discover, with varied grim biomes that have plenty of atmosphere that are filled with dangers. If you camp for the night, there’s every chance you’ll be ambushed. If you stray too far from the beaten track, don’t be surprised if you encounter enemies waiting to smash you to a pulp.

With a branching narrative spanning more than 300,000 lines of text and multiple endings, there’s more than 60 hours of content available here, not including all the side quests and secrets to uncover. Scratching that old school itch is the name of Black Geyser’s game, and with future launch plans set to bring pets, strongholds and additional content, its launch this week is only the beginning.

In a few hours time it'll be available on Steam and GoG for $29.99. We wish them all the very best!

Are you ready to be corrupted by Black Geyser’s greed?

Clanfolk Demo - Developer builds a homestead, then sets it on fire (Livestream)

I will be spending the hour playing through the Clanfolk demo and explaining how systems work as well as answering questions in the chat window.

Clanfolk has quite a long demo, so I won't get to all the content, but there will be a lot to see and learn.

I will likely also be setting things on fire from time to time, usually by accident. :)
