EA will announce a remaster in "the coming months" (it's gotta be Mass Effect)

A Mass Effect trilogy remaster is coming. No, EA has not yet announced it, but reliable industry insiders have continued to report on it, and the publisher continues to tease a major upcoming remaster. In today's financial results report, the company even puts a soft window on the 'mysterious' remaster's announcement.

EA says that "over the coming months we expect to announce the launch dates of additional fiscal year 2021 title releases, including an EA Originals title and a remastered title." EA's fiscal year on March 31, 2021, so that would put the remastered title out sometime in the next five months.

Early reports suggested that the Mass Effect remaster would likely launch by the end of calendar 2020, though apparently the developers delayed past their initial targets and pushed the game to 2021 in an effort to provide more substantial improvements to Mass Effect 1. EA has said that their big remaster would be launching in fiscal 2021 all along, and it looks like it's still on target to hit in March.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition remasters original trilogy, coming early 2021

Korean ratings site has listed Mass Effect Legendary Edition

The Mass Effect remaster is looking real after receiving a rating in South Korea

The rumoured Mass Effect HD remaster has become a bit more tangible now that the Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea has just rated Mass Effect Legendary Edition.  VentureBeat reported on its existence back in May, but EA has kept it zipped since then. As is so often the case, though, a publicly available rating has given it away.  Mass Effect Legendary Edition is included in a large list of games that have recently been classified in South Korea (cheers Gematsu). You can download the list from the website, and you'll find it listed at 52. With just a single rating, it suggests that the games will be collected rather than available individually, which isn't surprising.  A recent attempt to replay the trilogy has convinced me it could do with quite a bit more than an HD makeover. Mass Effect 3 was lauded for big improvements to the action, but now it feels just as unsatisfying as the rest, with none of them having particularly engaging fights—just ones I wish I could get through faster. It was actually after facing wave after wave of Cerberus goons in Mass Effect 3 that I finally packed it in, killing my replay.  Some combat tweaks and a shiny upgrade, though? I'd consider making a new Shepard for that. With EA still not spilling the beans, however, we'll have to wait a bit longer to find out the extent of the remaster.

It looks like we're closer to getting that reported Mass Effect trilogy HD remaster people have been banging on about. The Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea has posted a rating for an unannounced title called Mass Effect Legendary Edition (thanks, Gematsu). At the time of writing, it's still there so you can go and check it out for yourself.

This wouldn't be the first time a rating came before an actual reveal. A rating popped up on the same website for Need for Speed: Hot Pursuits' remaster a few weeks before EA revealed it. We also caught wind of Silent Hill 4 coming to PC digitally a day before it happened because the rating popped up on PEGI. Rating sites are in fine form this year, what can we say.

If you've been out of the loop, back in May, Electronic Arts revealed during a financial earnings report that it had plans to release an "EA HD title" before the end of the fiscal year, which is March 31, 2021. As reported by GamesBeat, that referred to an HD remake of the Mass Effect trilogy. There was some hope that we'd see it this year, but GamesBeat additionally reports that a mixture of the first game's original state and slowdown brought about by COVID-19 has delayed the remastered trilogy into next year most likely.
