Dev Log #4 - Gamescom, MIX, Indiecraft, and more

Summary: The Month of August and Beyond!

Dev Log 4 is now here! Since the last dev log, Newcore Games attended Devcom and Gamescom in Germany, bringing the boss demo of 'The Devil Within: Satgat' to even more people! Right after Gamescom came our newest Developer Update Trailer, where we showcased what improvements we are in the process of introducing to the game. We also nabbed 1st place at the Indiecraft awards in South Korea, which is a huge honor for us! What a wild few weeks!
Devcom
Newcore Games attended Devcom in Cologne (Köln), Germany as an exhibitor. At Devcom, we were part of the Indie showcase and had attendees check out our game and chat about gaming as a whole. Similar to a lot of indie game showcases, studios need to apply and make a strong case to be selected. Thank you to the Devcom team for not only selecting us to attend, but also making the whole event such a pleasant experience.

While we did show off the boss demo (as we do at most gaming conventions we attend), this was a little different in that a lot of students came out to talk about both gaming and the gaming industry. This was a lot of fun - not just because we get to talk about something we have so much experience in, but to see a whole generation of future game developers/artists that are so eager to make an imprint on this industry is wildly fascinating. To all of you who asked questions to us, thank you!

While our team was fielding questions at the booth and talking with the other indie developers (check them out here, they are so awesome), our Communications Manager/Business Developer Rob went on the Devcom stream to talk about the game and the background of Newcore Games. If you are interested in checking out the stream, you can catch the VOD on Devcom's twitch here! We are not sure how long the VOD will remain up there, but do check out everyone who was on the stream!
Gamescom
Right after Devcom ended, Newcore Games was busy setting up for Gamescom, one of the largest gaming events in the world. Our game was presented at the Indie Arena Booth section as well as the Korean Pavilion!

At the Indie Arena Booth, we had an arcade-styled booth with fantastic art created by our art team! We realized that with the Boss Demo, players felt like it was a true arcade experience, comparing it to games that they grew up with. This was a huge compliment for us, so thank you to everyone who enjoyed the boss demo!

With everyone taking their shot at Lee Choong, we had a lot of fun seeing how players approach the boss fight. During Gamescom, we had the most clears of the boss demo than any other event or gaming convention that we have been too.

We also had players coming back for more, taking on challenges that Rob had done. Here are a few that people had tried and completed:
 • no potions
 • no weak attack
 • no left/right movement (unless you use a skill)

If anyone reading has some good challenges to try out, let us know!
The MIX Showcase Next 2023
We were granted the opportunity to present our latest developer update trailer at the MIX Showcase Next 2023! If you haven't gotten a chance to check it out yet, please do! We took in a lot of feedback from our growing community and we cannot wait for everyone to check it all out!
Indiecraft
In Pangyo, South Korea, the awards for Indiecraft were announced and The Devil Within: Satgat took home first place! To gain recognition by leaders of the industry in South Korea is always something that we are excited about, so thank you to all of the judges and all of you players who made some noise for us!
Going Forward
With Devcom, Gamescom, the MIX, and Indiecraft out of the way, you would imagine that we would have time to rest. That being said, we have a lot of things coming up in the next few months, starting with our participation in the Tokyo Game Show 2023, exciting updates to the game, and more! Stay tuned for more announcements, try out the demo and wishlist the game!

Dev Log #3 - BitSummit and Future Intentions!

Summary: BitSummit and Future Intentions!

Dev Log 3 is now here! Since the last dev log, Newcore Games went to Kyoto, Japan to participate in BitSummit! We were happy to meet gamers as well as other indie devs, publishers, and game media members as a whole! We are also gearing up to attend the Indie Arena Booth of Gamescom in Germany in August!

Want to learn more? Read on!
BitSummit
Newcore Games went to Kyoto, Japan to attend BitSummit, one of the leading indie game development festivals in Japan. Here, gamers are able to check out the latest in indie games for themselves. This also provided the opportunity for indie devs to meet with one another as well as members of game media.

At the venue, players took on Lee Choong in the Boss Battle Demo. Compared to PlayX4 and IndieCraft, we saw a lot more players fly through the demo and take down Lee Choong! Players also got to try out the game on Steam Deck, which got great reviews and a lot of feedback here as well, so we will make sure to review all feedback before we make changes to the game.

One of the other things about BitSummit is that we got to see many more indie devs, some of whom became closer friends of ours! If you haven't gotten a chance already, check out the list of games that were present during BitSummit 2023! There are so many different types of games for gamers to check out, so we are sure you will find something that you enjoy (like The Devil Within: Satgat)!

If you are interested in IGN Japan's Japanese coverage of our game, you can check it out here:
New Images for The Devil Within: Satgat
We also learned from Bitsummit that we needed to update our main image of the game. While we are fond the original image, our art team developed a really cool image of Kim Rip facing off against a horde of enemies (those of you who played the demo would be familiar with the horde).

Let us know what you think about the new image! We are in the process of coming up with a few different designs, so we hope you continue to check out the new art work we have ready for you guys!
Prepping for Indie Arena Booth at Gamescom
With BitSummit done, Newcore Games is preparing to attend the Indie Arena Booth 2023 at Gamescom! We are excited to be a part of the Indie Arena Booth and cannot wait to bring The Devil Within: Satgat to our European fans!

We will be in the Indie Arena Booth area, so stop by and give the game a try! You can also have a chat with us from Newcore Games if you feel so inclined. There are a lot of great games that are going to be at the Indie Arena Booth!
Going Forward
July was a great month in getting to know our players from Japan. We also made great strides in what we want to improve upon in The Devil Within: Satgat after hearing feedback from everyone we met at BitSummit. We also have a lot of things that we are looking to improve and add, so stay tuned for future announcements!

This summer has been busy but extremely productive for us, so from us at Newcore Games, thank you for your continued interest. If you haven't already, try out the demo and wishlist the game!

Dev Log #2 - Steam Next Fest and Indiecraft

Summary: Indiecraft and Steam Next Fest Recap!

Welcome to the second edition of Newcore Games' developer log (the first one is on the website here)! Here, we talk about the things that Newcore Games has been up to with The Devil Within: Satgat. These are somewhat long reads, so there will be a summary at the top!

Since the last dev log, Newcore Games has participated in a few other events, like Indiecraft in South Korea and in Steam Next Fest, and is scheduled to participate in more! Netting 2nd place at South Korea's Indiecraft and landing near the top of Steam's Next Fest platformers were huge accomplishments for us at Newcore Games! Let us know what kind of topics you would like for us to cover!

Want to learn more? Read on!
Indiecraft
Newcore Games entered 'The Devil Within: Satgat' into the Indiecraft competition held in Seongnam, South Korea. This competition aims to find indie games that have been developed in South Korea and see which games have the most interesting themes, mechanics, and more.

An offline event showcase for Indiecraft was held, where indie game enthusiasts would be able to play the games that participated. Much like at PlayX4 in South Korea, the build the players were able to try out was the Lee Choong Boss Battle Demo. This boss fight was challenging for players, but overall they enjoyed it and the difficulty of the demo!

Not only did the players enjoy the game, but we found that the judges liked 'The Devil Within: Satgat' as the game was able to take home 2nd place at Indiecraft! Newcore Games was honored to have been able to participate in the competition and be recognized amongst some great and novel games that we are sure will be loved by players.

If you are interested in some of the Korean interviews that we had about the game, you are welcome to check them out here:
Prepping for Steam Next Fest
With Indiecraft done with, Newcore Games was getting ready to launch a full demo version of The Devil Within: Satgat. We announced that a new demo will be available during Steam Next Fest, which included cutscenes, a tutorial stage that sets the stage for the story and gets players used to the mechanics, and then all of stage 1 that includes the Lee Choong boss battle.

The month of June was broken down into different segments of exposure. The 2 weeks were dedicated to press/media previews, then from June 19th onwards was when the public were able to try out the demo.

The first two weeks were a whirlwind. With media outlets reviewing our game, PlayStation and IGN posting our new cinematic trailer, and influencers playing the full demo for the first time - we experienced a huge uptick in people noticing The Devil Within: Satgat. Suddenly, just typing in 'Satgat' would lead players to the game on Steam, which is a huge development! Thank you to everyone who helped bring The Devil Within: Satgat to the forefront as well as providing your feedback!

When Steam Next Fest started, the public were able to get their hands on the demo and give it a try themselves. A lot of the reviews that we got during the first few days were great: there was a lot of information on things that we can improve, things that players liked and disliked, and more. With this, we decided to try and fix some of the big issues that players brought to our attention (June 21 Patch)!

However, this fix unfortunately caused an unrelated issue, where in certain circumstances the game would indefinitely load. Players let us know right away, which we genuinely appreciated. Luckily, the team was able to have that fixed in the update of the next day (June 22 Patch).

Overall, the reception of the game was great and the feedback that we have gathered is going to help us polish the game even more. There were pain points that we expected, but also learned more about how a wider range of players approach games like ours. There is still more to improve, so we will continue to gather feedback on the demo! Please do send whatever ideas or suggestions that you may have after playing!

Steam Next Fest is such a great outlet for games to really present themselves to the public, a public that genuinely wants to try new and interesting games. Thank you to everyone who gave the demo a try!
Going Forward
The month of June allowed our studio to learn a lot of different things that are going to help us improve as we go forward. We gained more experience in running an offline event (stay tuned for more information as to where 'The Devil Within: Satgat' may show up!) and gained valuable insights in digital exposure through Next Fest. We also established our Discord, Steam, and Social Media communities/communication channels.

We have a lot more planned in the coming months, so from us at Newcore Games, thank you for your continued interest. If you haven't already, try out the demo and wishlist the game!
