Dev Log #6: Challenging the Basics
Hi Villains! Everyone! It's been a while!
Many games follow a lot of established tropes of the genre that are rarely questioned. In Lords of Ravage, we try to change some of the foundations of the Dungeon Crawler genre. For example, one of the main tropes is the squad of heroes that the player needs to take care of. But does it really have to be that way?

By thematically dedicating the game to villains, we opened the option to divide all fighters into followers, whose lives are expendable, and leaders. The latter are the titular Lords, extremely powerful characters whose deaths end the game. To emphasize the difference between Lords and followers, we gave the latter passive abilities that give bonuses when they die, encouraging the tactical sacrifice of units and highlighting their replaceable nature.

Since unit upgrades are a very important element of a Dungeon Crawler, we've made the upgrades affect unit classes. This means that the improvements apply to all units of a certain class in the army, including those that you will hire in the future. This way, we hope to provide an interesting, fresh take on the genre by changing some of its fundamentals.

Game Reworks from 2022/2024

> PLAY DEMO! <

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1830320/Lords_of_Ravage/

Hi, Villains!

Sorry for the long delay between the dev diaries. With that kind of delay, you may wonder if the project is even alive. We are working hard behind the scenes and we've changed the game quite a lot since our last demo:

> UI/UX reworks.

The biggest issue in the old demo was the UI/UX, so that's what we're focusing on.

And we are working on improving and bringing the game to a quality and usable form.

> Lighting rework.

We've spent, a lot of time tweaking shaders, fog, and lighting to make the game as visually appealing as we can.

> Onboarding.

Oh boy, there are a lot of smaller systems in play! You've got combat, edicts, relics, and base building, which sounds fun but can result in one hell of a learning curve. So we're working on making these subsystems unlockable between runs to ease new players into the game.

> More powerful troops.

Compared to the old demo, your troops are way more powerful, at least early on. The average Dread Knight eats regular troops for breakfast. But your activity in the region will surely bring much more experienced troops and powerful heroes.
> Leader unit.

It is fun to have an Uber unit that is capable of winning an entire fight on its own. In the previous demo, Berold died to a bunch of armed peasants. The problem was his health pool and the enemy's damage. We've addressed both, making the Lord-Commander of Dread Knights pretty powerful while preventing him from being the "win button" due to his limited health regen and enemies designed to counter Leaders specifically.

The latter two are especially tricky and are subject to constant tweaks. Your leader needs to feel powerful, but not too powerful to the point of making the army focus non-viable.
