Lost Records: Bloom & Rage - Tape 1: Bloom review

Most writing tries to avoid cliché, understanding that an overused idea is one that has lost its power. It often feels as if video games take the opposite approach, gleefully piling tropes high upon their back like Labyrinth's junk lady. Sure, they sacrifice the opportunity to say anything affecting or which feels true, but presumably the theory is that reminding you of a dozen other films, TV shows, books and games you like is just as good.

Enter Lost Records: Bloom & Rage, hunched over from the weight of all the teen TV shows and young adult novels stacked atop its shoulders.

Lost Records: Bloom & Rage – Tape 1 (PlayStation 5) Review

I had been keeping my eye on Lost Records: Bloom & Rage ever since I saw the first trailer drop during the 2022 Game Awards. DON’T NOD has been pretty consistent with their games ever since the first Life Is Strange, and even though these kinds of episodic narrative games have fallen somewhat out of fashion as of late, you can always count on them to bring something weird and wonderful to the table.

At least, that was what I thought until I played through the entirety of Lost Records: Bloom & RageTape 1—a bizarrely structured and not entirely well-delivered first act that is meant to set the stage for something bigger, but draws the curtain before the band is even finished setting up.

Now, that isn’t to say Lost Records: Bloom & Rage – Tape One is completely without merit. The bones are certainly here for a good story, and there are a lot of genuinely sweet and heartfelt moments throughout. However, even for a story split into two parts,... Read more

Speaking of music, you can now listen to five different official playlists of music picked by the game’s characters! There’s a playlist for Swann and each of her friends, as well as one filled with music that inspired their punk band, Bloom & Rage. Each girls’ playlist reflects their unique personalities and explores various genres of music, blending songs from their teenage years in the 90’s with tracks they’d listen to as adults in the 2020’s.

Swann’s playlist consists of movie OSTs, dream pop and chill/lofi music. Autumn’s is VGM (Video Game Music), chiptune, and ambient. Nora loves goth rock and punk, and finally, Kat’s playlist is made up of rock, punk, and grunge.
