Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is my personal game of the year so far. Sure, Bloodlines 2 is just around the corner and, as a VTM enthusiast, I'll probably enjoy it, but it's hard to find games that are truly remarkable. With its forward-thinking spin on turn-based action and its masterfully crafted setting that seamlessly entwines dark fantasy with Sandfall's French roots, there's nothing else quite like Expedition 33. Its story is powerful, brought to life by an all-star cast; its world is haunting and merciless, yet there are flashes of hope. From start to finish, Expedition 33 is a masterpiece, and it's further proof that a small studio with a razor-sharp vision, when left to its own devices, can create something truly magical.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is getting a whoole free update with a new location, boss battles and threads

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 developers Sandfall Interactive have wheeled out news that the RPG'll be getting a free update which'll include a new location for its party to explore, more boss battles, and some extra costumes. The studio are teasing that there'll be other stuff packed into this update, which they say is designed to act as a thank you to folks who've delved into the Belle Époque Frenchness.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's lead writer had apparently never played a video game before writing it

There is a belief that appears to crop up within the games industry that to work in it, you must be wholly aware of everything in it. You must live, breathe and die by games! That doesn't always result in interesting games though, sometimes it's actually quite useful to have outsiders come in to bring other perspectives. Admittedly that occasionally results in writers from the film industry waltzing in thinking it's a one-to-one transfer, which is admittedly not great. But other times you get Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, whose writer, as it turns out, had not played a single video game in her life before writing it.

Following up an award-hoarding hit with a sequel is a tough gig - innovations and new content may upset those that worshipped the original, and the expectation bar will always be set sky high. Hades 2 has faced this very challenge, but Supergiant has given it plenty of cooking time in early access to create what appears to be the perfect roguelike sequel. With version 1.0 arriving tomorrow, September 25, critic reviews have just come flooding in. With an average of 94 on Metacritic, Hades 2 is not only being scored more highly than its predecessor, but it has now shot to the top of the aggregator's 2025 chart for PC games, surpassing GOTY frontrunner Clair Obscur Expedition 33.
