Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 News

Here's a rare chance to grab Clair Obscur Expedition 33 for just $1

I love the best RPGs as much as the next PC player, but turn-based games usually aren't my thing - I much prefer the immersion of real-time action. However, it didn't take long for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 to quickly become my favorite role-playing game of all time, with an incredible story that is broken up by engaging and flashy rounds of combat. If you want to see why everyone is shouting from the rooftops about this game being amazing, Fanatical is giving you a chance to grab it for just $1 - if you're lucky.

Once upon a time, when I was a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed university student, I wrote a dissertation on L.A. Noire. While my main focus was its portrayal of PTSD in 1940s America, it's the ending that sticks with me most. I, like many, found protagonist Cole Phelps to be thoroughly unlikable, even arrogant, yet the conclusion of his story still hits hard because he's so convincingly written. That sort of high-stakes, shocking storytelling is threaded throughout Expedition 33, one of the year's best RPGs, which arguably goes one step further by frontloading its most devastating surprise.

Please note that this article contains major spoilers for both Expedition 33 and L.A. Noire. Tread lightly, expeditioner.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 needs no introduction at this point, and developer Sandfall Interactive's journey through its creation has been tremendously well-documented. The stunning, surrealist adventure will live long in the memory for its gloriously executed narrative (and my clumsily executed parries). But looking back after five million copies sold, is there anything the team would have liked to have done differently? We spoke with CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche and COO Francois Meurisse to find out.

As triple-A fatigue sets in for some, we're seeing small, often slightly strange indie games take off like almost never before. Schedule 1, R.E.P.O, Peak, and, most recently, Megabonk have all carved their name into videogame history, while some blockbuster titans have floundered. Of course, I'd be remiss to leave Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 off that list - it's my personal GOTY so far, after all. But what are Sandfall's picks? One dev's answer surprised me.
