Retro '90s horror game Fear the Spotlight returns to Steam after a year

Horror has lost something in recent years, in part because the fidelity of games has massively improved. In the 1990s you would be forced to fill in what you were seeing and experiencing with your imagination, making something far scarier than anything that was actually happening on screen. The most terrifying place to be is inside your imagination which is why classics like Silent Hill and Resident Evil remain compelling, so many years later. Fear the Spotlight is a game that understands this very well, with a retro aesthetic that tugs at the darkest recesses of your brain, and it's finally about to get its full release on Steam.

Release Date Revealed

Hi all,

We're excited to finally reveal the release date for Fear the Spotlight! You'll be able to play it on October 22nd!

It's been an incredible journey. Over the past year we've added so much to the game, and now it finally feels complete. We can't wait for you to experience it.

As a special bonus, we were featured in PlayStation's State of Play! Since this game is our love letter to the PlayStation horror classics that inspired us, being part of an official PlayStation showcase was an amazing honor.

Hi all!

We're still working hard on bringing you Fear the Spotlight later this year on all consoles. We're so excited with what we are adding to Fear the Spotlight and we will be announcing more about the game soon!

New horror game Fear the Spotlight is the '90s hit you need

While modern horror games are growing ever more elaborate, there's still something quite unnerving about that '90s 3D aesthetic. With classics like Silent Hill and Resident Evil using the design and tech limitations of the time to create fear-inducing yet alluring low-polygon worlds, horror fans still hold that nascent era of classic horror gaming in high regard. Putting their keen eyes on nostalgia, the developers behind the upcoming Fear the Spotlight are hoping to craft an experience that captures that same sense of low-poly dread and unease, and from what I saw at Summer Game Fest, they're doing it pretty well.

Blumhouse Games reveals its first release: A PS1-style horror adventure that promises no jump scares

Production studio Blumhouse announced a move into videogames in 2023 with a new division called Blumhouse Games, which it said will "partner with independent game developers to bring their creative vision to life via original, horror-themed games."
