Fear the Spotlight review: Blumhouse Games’ ghost story debut is a promising start

Spooky season is well under way following the successful launch of the Silent Hill 2 remake, but fans of survival horror have more to look forward to this month with the release of Cozy Game Pals’ Fear the Spotlight. The first of multiple projects that Blumhouse Games has plans to publish, Fear the Spotlight is a suitably creepy, teen-slasher style romp that — while not all that scary for the most part — is a strong start for the publisher’s upcoming slate of games.

Fear the Spotlight (PS5) Review

Fear the Spotlight has an interesting background. Initially released in September of last year, it was pulled from the Steam store after receiving an infusion from Blumhouse and its new video game publishing arm. The game was re-released this year, now on consoles, with the addition of the second half of the story and more development time to QA some bugs. As the first of many games to be published by Blumhouse, Fear the Spotlight has garnered significant attention to set the tone for what to expect from Blumhouse’s gaming ventures. But unfortunately I had to suspend my most hard-and-fast rule when playing the PS1-style survival horror, Fear the Spotlight's demo, and I'm still angry about it...

Retro '90s horror game Fear the Spotlight returns to Steam after a year

Horror has lost something in recent years, in part because the fidelity of games has massively improved. In the 1990s you would be forced to fill in what you were seeing and experiencing with your imagination, making something far scarier than anything that was actually happening on screen. The most terrifying place to be is inside your imagination which is why classics like Silent Hill and Resident Evil remain compelling, so many years later. Fear the Spotlight is a game that understands this very well, with a retro aesthetic that tugs at the darkest recesses of your brain, and it's finally about to get its full release on Steam.
