Ex Subnautica 2 bosses file lawsuit after claims of "abandoned" responsibilities

Friday July 11 - Added a new statement from Unknown Worlds co-founder Charlie Cleveland.


Just when you thought the Subnautica 2 and Unknown Worlds saga couldn't get any wilder, it does. Krafton, the parent company of Unknown Worlds that ousted three key leaders last week, has issued a lengthy statement explaining its decision. In this message, Krafton claims that the trio "abandoned the responsibilities entrusted to them." It also says that the studio's two co-founders refused to return to the development roles they held while creating the first Subnautica to help push the upcoming sequel along.

Subnautica 2 publishers Krafton have accused three recently ousted leads of "abandoning" their duties on the game, suggesting that this is to blame for it being delayed. That statement was almost immediately followed by one of the former Unknown Worlds bosses, co-founder Charlie Cleveland, writing in a Reddit post that a lawsuit's been filed by the trio against the company.


These are the latest twists in an ongoing saga that began with Striking Distance CEO Steve Papoutsis being parachuted in to replace Cleveland, fellow co-founder Max McGuire, and CEO Ted Gill earlier this month. That kicked off a war of words between the two sides, punctuated by a report from Bloomberg which alleged Krafton's call to delay the game was made just before a $250 million bonus was set to be paid to Unknown Worlds staff.

The cold war of words between Subnautica 2 publisher Krafton and the recently ousted leadership of developer Unknown Worlds got very hot today as Krafton issued a statement accusing the former studio heads of effectively abandoning the project, resulting in "repeated confusion in direction and significant delays in the overall project schedule."..
