Events, Events, Events!
AN EVENT-FULL FEW MONTHS
Hi everyone, Alex here.

We’ve had a busy few months! As well as keeping on top of development we’ve also been showcasing Mythwrecked at a number of physical events, some of them close to home, some slightly(much) further away.

We’ll step through a few in a moment, but first I thought I’d talk a little about why physical ‘IRL’ events are still important to us.

The rise of online events has been incredible for developers around the world so you might wonder what benefits showcasing an indie game at a physical event might hold. Simply put, there is no replacement for watching someone play your game over their shoulder (possibly through your fingers) and then having a chat with them about it afterwards.

You can quickly gauge how excited they are about the high-level concept and also see whether there are any parts they’re struggling with when they play the demo. It’s super handy to get a feel for where the game’s design can be improved to allow for a better experience not just for them, but for others too.

Without further ado let’s take a look at a few of the events we’ve showcased at recently!
WASD x IGN (LONDON, ENGLAND)
Mythwrecked has been shown at numerous physical events before by our publishers, the lovely folks at Whitethorn Games. They’ve been doing an amazing job of showing the game off stateside at PAX, GDC and beyond!

However, WASD x IGN in London was the first time I’d personally showcased the game publicly myself. Showing off a game you’ve been working on at an event can be a strange mix of excitement and mild terror but I needn’t have worried, the game went down a storm.

We were fortunate to have great booth neighbors and the event flew by. We even had a surprise visit from Elle Osili-Wood, the actress and presenter who lends us her vocal chords to voice Mythwrecked’s player character and unlikely hero, Alex!
SXSW (SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA)
The Mythwrecked dev team is spearheaded from Scotland, so we were really excited when we were invited to showcase the game on the other side of the world, at Sydney, Australia!

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to take the time out to attend the event personally so Australia still remains on our bucket list of destinations to visit. We did however have amazing support from a student volunteer Isaac. They did an incredible job managing our booth, sending us feedback and got to attend the prestigious event for free and rub shoulders with the developers.

There were loads of really amazing indie games showcasing there. Even though we couldn’t attend, some developers we knew from social media sent us some photos of them visiting the Mythwrecked booth! Above is the fantastic Jair McBain (above) from the Summerhill Team. We even had prestigious neighbors in the form of Saltsea Chronicles by Die Gut Fabrik who were kind enough to send us a snap.
SCOTTISH GAMES WEEK (EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND)
That brings us to our final event, this time a little closer to home. Last week I attended Scottish Games Week at the spectacular Dynamic Earth venue in Edinburgh.

We moved up to Scotland a couple of years ago so are relative newcomers to the area, which made it even nicer when we were invited to showcase Mythwrecked at a two-day event celebrating the Scottish game industry.

It was a great chance to meet other Scottish developers and make some new friends (we again found ourselves with lovely booth neighbors, this time in the form of the Farewell North game and its creator Kyle).

It also gave us the chance to road test our new Greek beach blanket we used to make the Mythwrecked booth a little more cozy! We’d seen the Gladieaters team theme their table space at WASD x IGN so we were inspired to do the same and bring a bit of Greece to Scotland.

For the second event in a row we also brought the Steam Deck as a second playable device. Mythwrecked is running buttery-smooth on it and folks love to take it for a spin if they’ve had the chance to try one yet.

Animal Crossing meets Hades in non-violent story sandbox Mythwrecked

During a hectic afternoon at WASD, I find myself marooned on a mythical island. Polygon Treehouse's Mythwrecked is a small pocket of calm in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the convention floor, and I'm enveloped in the sound of seafoam and a gentle harp as I befriend amnesiac gods, pick through abandoned ruins, and feed dried dates to seagulls. Afterwards, I catch up with creative director Alex Kanaris-Sotiriou to talk myth and modernity.

Dev Blog - Modern Myths
MODERN DAY MEETS MYTHOLOGY
Mythwrecked is set in the present day. You play as a backpacker taking a much needed vacation from the pressures of modern life who is shipwrecked on a mysterious island that is home to some rather strange residents, the long-lost gods of Greek mythology!

In our last dev-blog we spoke about contrasts. When we were coming up with the idea for the game we really liked the idea of someone from the modern world meeting the gods of ancient Greece. It’s a classic ‘fish out of water’ set-up that we found really playful, exciting and couldn’t wait to explore from a story and gameplay perspective.

You know when you have a good idea because your brain will start firing and the ideas and questions will start to flow. We were asking ourselves:-

 • ‘Why have the gods been absent from the world for so long?’
 • ‘How have they changed over time?’
 • ‘What do they look like and how do they act?’
 • ‘How are they relevant in today’s modern world?’
WHAT IS MYTHOLOGY
We’re getting a little ahead of ourselves though! In order to answer those questions it’s first good to look at the concept of ‘mythology’ and its purpose.

Mythology is broad but generally speaking is the stories of gods, their exploits and the origins of the world. You might think these tales of supremely powerful divine beings wouldn’t be relatable to us puny mortals, but think again.

The role of these Mythical stories is actually closely linked to the human condition. They can be interpreted to distill an ancient society's culture, moral code and values. They can be tales of caution (looking at you Icarus) or to inspire greatness. They brought a sense of meaning and comfort to the chaos of the ancient world.

Today, myths and legends fade away from our modern world of technology and science.
MODERNISING MYTHOLOGY’
There have been many modern takes on the Greek Gods across films, comics and video games, everything from Lore Olympus (which is soon to become a Netflix series) to the Marvel Universe’s Eternals (which itself has had a few different versions!).

Each interpretation varies a great deal and it’s this ‘spin’ that gives each creation its own character and message. So what was the thinking behind our take on modernizing the gods of ancient Greece for our next game?
MYTHICAL MAKEOVER
Earlier we talked about myths and their role in bringing a sense of meaning to a chaotic ancient world. Well dear reader, have you watched the news recently? Even after all the scientific and technological advancements we have today, the world is a pretty chaotic place, even more so in recent years. So maybe it’s time for the gods and myths to make a comeback, but this time to give an insight into the modern world we find ourselves in today.

For Mythwrecked we wanted a cast of gods that were kinda goofy, entertaining and ultimately relatable. We spoke earlier about how myths can give an insight into the human condition and the culture of the day. To achieve this it was essential that the player could connect and emphasize with our version of the gods. We want them to be able to connect with them on a human level, rather than looking up at all-powerful flawless beings on a plinth. In short, we want these to be characters facing relatable problems that you want to help, even the grumpy ones!

It is this humanity that we’ve tried to capture with our own take on the gods of ancient Greece and we look forward to introducing them to you next year.
