Stormgate update fully overhauls the Starcraft 2 spiritual successor's campaign

I dream of the day we hear about Starcraft 3, or a new Command and Conquer game. But while two of the genre's fundamental linchpins remain quiet, we've seen a real RTS revival with the likes of newcomer Tempest Rising, a fresh Age of Empires 2 update, and the returning Commandos Origins. Stormgate could one day be at the front of that charge, but the free Steam game's initial launch was met with a rather lukewarm reception. As it nears one year in early access, however, developer Frost Giant Studios has made various improvements, and now launches the "biggest leap forward for Stormgate yet."

Stormgate 0.4.0 Update

We’re excited to finally share Update 0.4.0, our biggest leap forward for Stormgate yet.

From the very beginning we set out to create an RTS experience that evolves over time - one that grows with you. With this update, we’re taking a major step toward that vision, and it all starts with a complete Campaign overhaul. We’ve rebuilt the first 6 missions from the ground up with new interludes, new VO, new art, and even new hero customizations to tailor your personal Campaign experience.

With the new Campaign, we also bring new unit models for various Infernal and Vanguard units, all new Hero and NPC models, a complete rework of Amara’s abilities in Campaign, checkpoint save/load improvements, new Campaign post-game stats, and other quality of life features.

Please note that this is a preview of our launch Campaign for testing purposes and not a finished work. If you have been waiting for the completed release of our Campaign before experiencing our story, we recommend that you remain patient and check back in when it’s done.

That said, there’s plenty for all Stormgate players to see in 0.4.0 outside of Campaign. Check out several all-new unit models, the new AI improvements in Custom Games, the visual upgrade for Infernal Shroud, plus various balance changes, bug fixes, and more!

Starcraft 2 spiritual successor Stormgate shows off major campaign rework

Frost Giant Studios has finally lifted the lid on its Stormgate campaign rework as the free-to-play RTS from former Starcraft, Warcraft, and Diablo developers attempts to turn around a rocky launch response. The single-player story mode was one of the most heavily criticized aspects of the strategy game's early-access release, with users bemoaning its placeholder presentation and underwhelming objectives, but it's now been dramatically overhauled and given a new lease on life.
