Dev Blog #3: Level Up Your Skills

[h3]Dear Sunborn,[/h3]

At their core, RPGs like Second Sun are focused on choices for the player. With their myriad of weapons, load-outs, and quest lines, they invite different playstyles, allowing players to choose the one that works best for them. Skills are another key factor in this modular system: while leveling up and growing more powerful, players can use the Skill Tree to adapt their character to their own strengths & preferences.



Like in any traditional RPG, you can strengthen your Sunborn by relentlessly murdering foes and completing the tasks set before you until you’ve gathered enough XP to level up. With each new level, you’ll get skill points that you can spend on our Skill Tree.

As with many skill trees when leveling up in Second Sun, you can choose between Active and Passive skills.

Active Skills

As implied by the name, active skills shape your actions in combat. From stronger attacks to health regeneration, they can make or break your run, turning a shocking defeat into a successful dungeon crawl. You can load your Action Bar with up to 4 Skills and use your skill points to make each skill more powerful as you level up.

Passive Skills

Alongside the Active Skills, Second Sun includes a variety of Passive Skills that’ll boost your survival chances and make you better at taking down enemies. You start the game with one Passive Skill slot, unlocking up to 3 as you progress.

Whether you prefer to charge headfirst into battle or adopt a more tactical approach, Second Sun’s robust Skill Tree and diverse skill options ensure that your journey is uniquely yours. Embrace the challenge, level up, and let your Sunborn shine!

The Demo is Back!

The festive season is upon us!

It’s been a great year for Second Sun. Since our initial announcement in May, we have been very grateful of the support we have gotten from all of you, and have worked tirelessly to incorporate your feedback into the final version of the game. We have shared a lot of the behind-the-scenes action here in our dev blog and gotten to be a part of cool events such as the October 2024 Steam Next Fest!

Since we are bursting with holiday cheer, we have decided to bring back the Second Sun Demo from the Next Fest! And as an extra treat, this demo is here to stay for now. Consider it our little Christmas present in advance - from us to you.

As we close out the year, we’d like to thank all of you one last time. Without you, there would be no game (or at least not as good a game), and for that, you have our greatest appreciation.

Dev Blog #2: Into The Arsenal

In the past, we have talked about the world of Second Sun, and the influences behind it. Today, we are going to talk about arguably the most important thing in an FPS: WEAPONS! (and how they kill good).

Bullets & Spells

As many of our demo players know, Second Sun has a variety of weapons ranging from pistols and wands, to fireballs and grenades. Rowen is a fantasy world where modern technology lives side-by-side with the magical and macabre, and no aspect can portray this duality better than combat! With magic and bullets at your disposal, the forces of the Dark Sun stand no chance!



Find Your Style

Getting more into the nitty gritty, these weapons aren't just for show! Shotguns, although very powerful, have short range and wide pellet spread, so they are great for close-quarter combat, but less effective in long distance encounters, which might benefit a player who likes to get in close to their enemies. On the other hand, magic, be it ice or fire, is not as fast as a bullet, however, they carry more than enough power to overcome that flaw! So where a Diviner might try to stay away in combat, a Marauder might rush in. If you want to play a style combining both, how you choose to use these weapons and approach combat is up to you!

Keep Your Favourite Weapon Close

With this in mind, at some point in the game, the player will have outgrown the weapon they love so much, and choose to instead utilize something more level-appropriate. But do not worry, for all weapons, big and small, have different versions with different rarities! Really like that fire staff, but its level is way too low now? Fret not, for you may find another at a much higher level.

Besides finding higher level weapons, you may also encounter ones with enchantment slots which can provide even more versatility in how you engage enemies and allow you to reach even greater heights of power. The possibilities are limitless!

Dev Blog #1: Second Sun's Biggest Influences

Now that players got a taste of our demo, we would like to talk about some of our inspirations that went into the development of Second Sun!

Boomer Shooters & RPGs

Inspiration for Second Sun came from many places! Movies, books and TV shows all contributed to inspiring Second Sun as it is today, but those weren't the main influences. We were hugely influenced old-school shooters like Quake & Doom and ARPGs such as Diablo!

When creating Second Sun, the idea was to take the fast pace and visceral combat of an old school shooter, and mix it with the fun factor of looting new items and building your character, and we believe we have successfully merged these ideas into a satisfying game in Second Sun.

Art & Atmosphere
On the other hand, a lot of Second Sun’s atmosphere and art style, as well as the design of the wider world, come from impressionist paintings of the early 20th Century depicting war and conflict. These inspirations not only bled into the world of Second Sun’ art style, but its narrative as well, and their influence can be seen and felt throughout the game.

Play The Second Sun Demo During Steam Next Fest!

Dear Sunborn,

The time has come to heed the call.

Your first trial awaits, and it's your chance to prove you can stand against the Dark Sun. We’re excited to announce that Second Sun will be part of next week’s Steam Next Fest, where you’ll get to dive into the demo!
