Dev Blog #6 - Testing, testing, testing!

Welcome back for another dev blog!

Today we have some exciting developments to talk about, specifically related to the gameplay and upcoming trailer.

Playtests

For the last month, we've been knee-deep in gameplay testing, with regular players, friends, and other game designers to give us their honest feedback. The good news is, we've been blown away by the results! It's been incredible to see Project Planet come to life and we can’t wait to share our progress with you all!

Based on the feedback, we don't expect any major changes to the gameplay will be necessary. However, we recognize the importance of making the game crystal clear to our players and we'll be spending the coming months perfecting what we already have. This gives us confidence in the direction of the game, and we expect to be able to announce a release date soon!

Gameplay Trailer

Last time we talked about recording the Gameplay Trailer. Today we’re happy to share that it's coming together nicely. We expect to have something more substantial to share in two weeks, but for now we’ll leave you with another sneak peek:

Dev Blog #5 - Gameplay Trailer Behind The Scenes

Welcome back for another dev blog!

Time flies! It’s already been two months since we officially revealed the first Project Planet teaser, which means it’s about time we released our next trailer! As mentioned in the last Dev Blog, we’ve already started working on the Gameplay Trailer, and today we’ll give you an exciting first look!

Gameplay Trailer

Although we believe that our Reveal Trailer effectively depicts the setting and graphics of Project Planet, we understand that you are eager to see the gameplay in action. To provide you with a better sense of the game, we’ve started working on the Gameplay Trailer which will feature in-game footage as well as a group of friends playing the game in a typical party game setting.

Because Project Planet is such a unique game, condensing all of its various elements into a brief trailer is quite challenging. Our goal is to effectively communicate the core concept of one Earth player facing off against five Humanity players, as well as the game's branching narratives, the social party game atmosphere of playing on a couch with friends via mobile phones, and the competition among Humanity players to emerge as the sole victor.

Figuring out how to effectively showcase all of these elements in a one-minute trailer required a lot of our brain power, but we think we managed it quite well and expect to be able to share the results in a few weeks. We can’t wait for your feedback!

Behind The Scenes

Of course we want to do more than just talk about the trailer, so it’s time to share some behind the scenes footage!

Last week we transformed our living room into a studio and recorded the footage. The trailer will become a mix of in-game footage and real-life footage. Check below for an impression behind the scenes, and be sure to let us know what you think about it!

Alright, that’s it for today. Be sure to follow us on our social channels for more content!

Dev Blog #4 - Event & Next Focus

Welcome back for another dev blog!

Today will be a shorter one, as we’re working hard on a new gameplay trailer and preparing the game for more playtesting with new players.

Board Game Night @The Arcade Hotel

Last time we talked about the upcoming Board Game Night at The Arcade Hotel, which was a huge success! We got to play the game with many board game enthusiasts and received a ton of useful feedback. Thanks to the hotel for having us! We might be back later this year.

Next focus

With the event behind us, it’s full force ahead with Project Planet’s development. One of the most frequently heard feedback was how not all the game features are immediately clear to new players. In the upcoming weeks, we will be working to further improve the clarity and add info buttons that players can tap for more information. This way we can avoid forcing you through a boring tutorial, while still explaining the game mechanics. Let us know what you think of this idea!

Our second focus this month will be the next trailer. While our reveal trailer mainly showed the visuals and setting of the game, our second trailer will give you a better idea of the gameplay itself. One of Project Planet’s biggest strengths is having fun together with your friends, and this trailer will show you exactly what that would be like!

Alright, we’ll wrap it up there and go back to work. Be sure to follow us on our social channels for more content!

Dev Blog #3 - Events and podcasts

Welcome back to another dev blog everyone!

Today we’re excited to announce we’ll be attending multiple real world events in the near future! This means we’ll be talking about the game and our studio on podcasts, and some of the lucky attendees may even get a first shot at playing the game!

Board Game Night @The Arcade Hotel

First on the agenda is a Board Game Night at The Arcade Hotel in Amsterdam, the world’s very first video game hotel, where guests can relax from their travels with all sorts of consoles and game areas, and even an entire arcade hall! The hotel prides itself on having the family feel of a hostel with the amenities of a fully serviced hotel.

The event will take place on January the 28th, and is a regular meetup of board game enthusiasts.Since Project Planet has a digital board game experience, we were invited to demonstrate our game and play it with the audience. So if you’re in the area and interested in getting some hands-on experience with the game (or if you simply like board games), sign up here and we’ll see you in a week’s time!

Podcasts

We're also excited to share that we're taking our love for the game industry to the airwaves by appearing on some of the top podcasts out there, one of which being a new podcast being launched by the same Arcade Hotel. We also have some other exciting developments in the works, but we can't reveal all the details just yet. Keep an eye out for our next Dev Blog for more information, as well as a first look at all the different Disasters in Project Planet!

That’s all for now. Be sure to follow us on our social channels for more content, keep an eye out for updates on the podcasts.

Dev Blog #2 - Gameplay

Happy New Year everyone!

It's time for another Dev Blog, and this one is a bit longer than usual.

We've shown you videos and screenshots of the Disasters in Project Planet, but we know you're curious about the gameplay. The team is hard at work creating an extensive gameplay trailer that should be ready later this quarter, but until then we wanted to give you a small sneak peek into the gameplay today!

Finding a group to play with

To start a game of Project Planet, gather some friends or if you’re still looking for those, find players on the #looking-for-group channel on our Discord. You can play with up to five other people, and any roles that are not filled will automatically be played by AI.

Project Planet is best enjoyed together on a couch, but if you can't all be in the same place, no problem - just stream the game to your friends using a video streaming service

Filling the lobby

Ready to play? Follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Project Planet website on your phone, tablet, or other web-enabled device.
  2. Enter the Lobby Code and choose a username.
  3. Press "Join Game" and wait for everyone to select their preferred role.
  4. It's game time!

So what’s the gameplay?

Now that the game has started, it’s time to put your survival skills to the test. First, Planet Earth chooses a Disaster to challenge humanity. Earth can add insult to injury by piling on a wide range of Incidents and Crises, destroying the planet’s Ecosystems, increasing global Pollution, and rapidly reducing Humanity’s Population.

Meanwhile, the other five players need to guide their way through a series of impossible dilemmas. Each decision can affect everyone’s scores and determines the path humanity takes, leading to endless potential scenarios.

There can only be one winner

While Project Planet is a 1v5 multiplayer game, there is only one ultimate winner. If the Population is reduced to zero, Planet Earth wins. If humanity survives, the player with the highest score wins. This means you'll need to balance your decisions for the good of the Population with those that benefit your own score. While it may be tempting to prioritize your own score, remember that going down the selfish route can lead to conflict with other players and even Humanity's demise.
