Project Planet - Earth vs Humanity News

Dev Blog #16 - First week of release!

Welcome back for another Dev Blog, the first one since Monday’s game launch!

Today we’re covering the amazing time we had in the first days of the release, changes coming in the first updates, and we’re revealing the final winners of the community meme contest.
Release

Monday was a dream come true for us. With lots of people tuning in to Twitch to see the official release (VOD here) and going from Popular Upcoming Releases to New & Trending on Steam within a few hours, it far exceeded our expectations for our tiny indie game. Thanks so much for all your support!

Next Updates

While we’re trying our hardest to enjoy the moment with the great reception and all the new players finding out about Project Planet, it’s also time to look to the future. We already have two updates in development, one being a smaller update with mostly bug fixes and improvements, and one being a larger content update that will introduce the much anticipated Asteroid Impact disaster to the game!

The smaller update will be patch 1.0.2 and is expected to be released within the next week. Some of the changes included in this build are:
  • A new reconnect system for the master device, to prevent players from getting locked out of their game if the master device loses connection for a short amount of time.
  • A variety of balance changes.
  • Fix for a bug that would cause an AI Earth to always select the Virus disaster.
  • Multiple fixes to small bugs and game stoppers.

Next up is Update 1.1, the first large update that will introduce the Asteroid Impact disaster to the game, as well as a rework of the Crisis. This should make the Crisis less punishing for the Earth player if it’s unsuccessful.

If you want to help us test this new update, be sure to join our weekly community dev stream on Fridays, or join one of the many streamers that have received early access to this content. You can find these streams under Events tab and #livestreams channel on the official Discord.

Community requests

We were also overwhelmed by all the great feedback and suggestions we received since the launch. We’re currently gathering a list of all the requests, and setting priorities to integrate these changes into the game. It greatly helps us determine what players want to see added or changed, so please keep ‘em coming!

A few examples of improvements or suggestions from players we are currently looking at:
  • Game translation into other languages and subtitles
  • Twitch integration (so Twitch chat can collectively influence the game)
  • Mod support for players to create their own scenarios
  • (Adjustable) turn and notification timers
  • Skip function for news videos and items
  • Borderless windowed mode
  • And many more!
Meme contest: final winners!

Today we’re also announcing the final winners of the community meme contest!

A big congrats to Blue_Star, Raiking and Conradillac for taking home 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively! They will be awarded a free game key or be featured in-game in a custom news item, according to their choice. Congrats!

Update 0.12 is live!

We just released update 0.12! This introduces lots of new and improved gameplay features, like a complete overhaul and clearer communication of how Ecosystems and Pollution allow Earth to unlock new questions and Incidents, as well as some balance tweaks and minor bug fixes.

Full changelog:

Changes:
  • Players now receive a turn notification screen in the colour of their role on their mobile device to warn them when it’s their turn.
  • Reintroduced the options button in the lobby. This time without game breaking bugs.
  • You can now remove players from the Lobby and select a new party leader on the master device.
  • Added Game Credits to the main menu
  • Added two new unlockable Incidents to Planet Earth.
  • Earth’s unlockable Incidents are now unlocked at 67% and 33% Ecosystems and Pollution, instead of only at 50%.
  • Earth’s Incidents that are only available when Ecosystems or Pollution is under 66% or 33% will now be available immediately after meeting this condition, instead of only after Earth used another Incident. (Senzi, you’re welcome)
  • Unlocked questions and Incidents now show the unlock criteria, and a red outline and fill colour to more clearly differentiate them from regular questions and Incidents.
  • Updated the Ecosystems and Pollution’s score bars on the master device, to more clearly communicate the unlock criteria for unlockable questions and Incidents.
  • Replaced the role names with player names in the Stage Results and Game Over screen, to make it clearer which player won (role icon still shows which role won).
  • Earth’s Influence Scores question at the end of each stage now has a different background image to make it stand out.
  • The Game Over screen now has separate SFXs and music depending on whether Earth or Humanity won.
  • Improved the names and wording for Nemesis, Stage Results, Crisis Results and Game Over awards.
  • Earth now has a unique Nemesis screen, showing which player had the most positive and negative impact on the Population, Ecosystems and Pollution (combined).

Balance changes:
  • Slightly nerfed Public and Industry in Hurricane disaster, while buffing Media and Earth.
  • Slightly nerfed Earth in Virus disaster.
  • Slightly buffed World Leaders and Media in Locust Plague disaster.

Bug fixes:
  • Fixed an issue where Earth wouldn’t always have three Incident options to choose from. (again welcome, Senzi)
  • Fixed an issue where the music would stop playing when a News Video would bring the Population below or above a threshold where another song starts playing.
  • Fixed an issue where the Earth Influence choices in the first tab of the Results Screen would show outdated icons for -8 Population, Ecosystems or Pollution.
  • Fixed an issue where the Crisis could trigger in the background of a News Video.
  • Fixed an issue where “Power” was called “Influence” in the Power tutorial popup.
  • Fixed multiple incorrect News Item voiceovers.
  • The Crisis timer on the master device and mobile devices are now more in-sync.
  • Many minor fixes to texts and scores.

Dev Blog #14 - New trailer, new update & more!

Welcome back for another Dev Blog!

Today we’re talking about our brand new trailer, participating in the Dreamhack Beyond Indie Summer Showcase and attending Gamescom, our Update 0.12 and our ongoing community meme contest!
Release date reveal trailer

Right after the last Dev Blog we revealed our brand new “Release Date Reveal Trailer”. It features an updated version of our Gameplay trailer with (in our opinion) much better pacing, and is the trailer we’ll be using for the last marketing push towards our release date.

September 25th is rapidly approaching, so if you haven’t already, watch the new trailer and get hyped!

Update 0.12

We also have some exciting news for those playing the demo or closed beta right now, as we plan to release Update 0.12 soon! It’ll have a lot of nice improvements, like clear notifications on your phone when it’s your turn, more tactical Earth gameplay, and lots of balance changes.

For the full list of changes, keep an eye out on the update 0.12 release post that’s coming when the update goes live in the next couple of days.

Dreamhack & Gamescom!

Recently we participated in the Dreamhack Beyond Indie Summer showcase, where we were featured on their Steam page for a full ten days! We saw a lot of new players join the Discord and an increase in Wishlists, and took the opportunity to have lots of livestreams which also allowed us to become Twitch affiliates!

We also attended Gamescom and spoke to lots of potential partners to get the game to more players in the future. So keep an eye out for more exciting news in the future!

Meme contest!

Last but not least, we still have our meme contest going on in the weekly community night streams over on Twitch! As mentioned before, we are now Twitch affiliates, which means the streams will be even more fun than before. We also have a large list of Twitch streamers playing the game live soon, so keep a close eye on our Events tab on the official Discord server for more information.
