Three indie games you need to grab during the Steam Summer Sale 2023

Every year I look through Steam sales, and there's always one game that stands out. Normally, this is because it's been on my wishlist for some time and has only just dropped to a value I'd be willing to pay, such as a triple-A game that I'd been on the fence about, or a smaller game that I couldn't justify paying full whack for.


However, as I was looking around the store during this year's Steam Summer sale, I noticed three indie games that I feel deserve far more exposure than they may be getting. One of these games is a self-published effort from a developer releasing their first game, while the other two come from smaller publishers. So if you're looking for an indie game that just hits a little differently, then we have a small selection of games that you should consider.

Pizza Tower looks and sounds like practically nothing else in gaming right now, its wacky '90s Cartoon Cartoon-style animation accompanied by a bafflingly catchy soundtrack—think classic blue sky, turn-of-the-millennium Sega vibes pushed to even greater heights. Of its two primary composers, Ronan "Mr. Sauceman" de Castel came to music late, with Pizza Tower not only being his first professional work, but first publicly available music, period. Catching up with the other main composer, ClascyJitto (also credited as Frostix), I found out that while they've been publishing their own work for a lot longer, they're also still in high school...

It's early days, but 2023 already seems to have a defining breakout indie hit: Pizza Tower, a breakneck platformer that combines some of the best elements of Wario Land and 2D Sonic with an art style like an alternate-timeline's '90s Nickelodeon cartoon. It also sounds incredible, like a 2D platformer soundtrack has no right to go this hard, but Ronan "Mr. Sauceman" de Castel and ClascyJitto (also credited as Frostix) made it happen...

- Updated the "Whoop This!" description to be more accurate.
- Fixed a crash when exiting at the start of the final phase in the final boss.
- Fixed an issue where the final boss wouldn't die in the final hit of the first phase sometimes.
- Fixed an issue where dying at any boss wouldn't reset the per level timer.
- Fixed an issue where completing the final level using the gate, then completing the final level naturally in another save file would disable some objects and end in an unintended way.
