Play a squad of Heroes trying to get their mines back from dangerous foes. Build your team and pick from a wide variety of classes: Healers, Archers, Fighters, Mages and more. Each new room will test your skills with intense fights and limited turns, and believe me, you don't want to know what happens when if you fail. Only few have returned... Anyway, while navigating through those treacherous mines, collect awesome equipment, upgrade it, sell and buy new one to fit your team and your strategy!

First Demo VS Now

Good day Heroes!

Can you believe It's already D-4 before Forgotten Mines' release?!
So, to show you how far the game has come since the First Demo back in 2022, here's a blogpost to explain and show you the major changes!
First Demo
For starters, I had never published a game on Steam before, but I did some research and knew it needed a good vertical slice. I developed a substantial demo that showcased the game up to its midpoint (but with a lot less content, of course), and despite my initial uncertainties, many of my decisions proved effective and contributed to my current progress. Essentially, my aim was to demonstrate that the game offered lots of content despite its minimalist appearance.

The core mechanics of Forgotten Mines have remained largely unchanged from the project's inception. While numerous enhancements have been added since then, the fundamental gameplay elements were established early on. Essentially I aimed to highlight the demo's extensive content, the distinctiveness of each character class and show that the classes were different from each other. I recall releasing the demo only after creating the Druid, which was the most distinctive class available at the time.
Now
Concerning the most significant changes; the UI was the standout. Until December last year, it hindered both players and the game itself. Substantial overhauls were made to the entire UI, marking it as the most evolved aspect of the game during its development.

Before changes After changes
After the first demo, I received much more feedback than I expected, including from prominent streamers whom I admired and followed. This feedback proved invaluable in shaping the game’s direction. Following a video on Forgotten Mines made by Retromation, I released the first update, addressing the initial difficulty that was deemed excessive. And after a video from Splattercat, the game’s music underwent a significant transformation, evolving from a neutral concept to a more thematic approach, aligning more closely with viewer comments.

But, what I remember being the most critical decisions shaping Forgotten Mines’ would be the turn limit. This mechanic, along with reinforcements and related elements, sparked recurring debates among the players I closely followed—from streamers to testers. But really, I feel that this somewhat contentious mechanic serves as the backbone of Forgotten Mines' gameplay loop. Just like the E.M.M.I from Metroid Dread: the game wouldn't exist without the discomfort these antagonists create.

As you can see, Forgotten Mines wouldn't be where it is now if it wasn't for the players' precious feedback, so if you have any thoughts to share, please do! And a huge thank you to everyone who takes the time to provide constructive criticism!

That's it for today, thank you for reading! I'm looking forward to you playing Forgotten Mines in less than a week!

FAQ Guide to Forgotten Mines

Fancy seeing you here Heroes!

We're getting closer and closer to Forgotten Mines' launch; which will be July 23rd. That's why I've been cooking an FAQ for you to better get acquainted with my lil game! So let's get started, shall we?

What is Forgotten Mines?
Forgotten Mines is a minimalist, small-scale tactical roguelite RPG where you’ll face endless possibilities to customize and strategize your party as you venture to reclaim the Dwarves' Lost Mines.

Use rare gems mined from the mountain’s depths to unlock new gear and classes, crafting a powerful team of Dwarven warriors. Battle relentless goblins, orcs, skeletons, and demons to reclaim what’s rightfully yours.

P.S: For those of you seeking an extra challenge, Descent Mode is a must-try.

What is the story?
Long ago, the Dwarves dug so deep that they uncovered the Gates of Hell, leading to the loss of their mines–the mines of Dorvgrad. You will be playing a party of Heroes on their way to reclaim these mines, after thousands of years of failed attempts. Now it’s your mission to seal the Evil and take back what was lost.

How long will the game be?
It will take you 5-7 hours to finish the game, that's if you get the run right the first time. But it will depend on how much time you take mining, crafting potions, buying equipment or restarting a new run.

Will it be difficult?
It is, indeed, a challenging game, but the roguelite elements will be of help!

Who’s making Forgotten Mines? Cannibal Goose (me) is the solo dev behind Forgotten Mines.

When is it releasing?
It will be released on July 23rd 4:00 pm CET, which corresponds to 10:00 am EDT and 11:00 am BRT!

On which platform will it release?
You’ll be able to play the game on PC!

How much will it cost?
The game will be $7,99/7,99€!

What are the supported languages?
English, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Simplified Chinese and Japanese.

Is there any trailer available for Forgotten Mines?
Yes there is! You can have a glimpse of the game HERE.

Is there a free Demo?
Yes and it is available on Forgotten Mines’ Steam page.

Do you have a Discord server?
Of course, you're welcome to join the Official Forgotten Mines Server and chat with other players and myself.

Where can I write my suggestions/ideas?
Share it in the #feedback channel on Discord, or the Steam Community Hub.
I’m eager to read about any insight you could have!

Mastering the Meta

Good day Heroes,

We've explored the intricacies of tactical battles, leveling mechanisms and other wonderful key themes to master in order to successfully win your run. Let's delve deeper into the world of Forgotten Mines with a very important subject: the Meta.
Currencies
There are four of them: Iron Ore, Gold Ore, Gems and Kingdom Coins. Iron and Gold serve as currencies during the expedition, used to purchase items and supplies within the mines, that is, they exist so the player's expedition is as successful as possible. Gems are used to improve future expeditions and can be exchanged for Kingdom Coins, which are crucial for passive improvements for future expeditions.

Iron is essential for upgrading equipment at the Blacksmith, while gold is extremely important to buy various items in the Shop and Reroll the items you can buy. Gems act as the primary meta-currency, while Kingdom Coins, although seemingly less valuable, are actually the most costly. The idea here was to generate an order of importance between varied resources, similar to the resource management in games like Heroes of Might and Magic III, where each resource has its unique utility and significance.
Amulets
Players must select three amulets from a wide range of bonuses to carry on their run. While some offer situational effects, others are even quite counterintuitive in their possible uses. The truth is, these amulets can synergize with class choices, forming powerful combinations.

I believe that players will discover and experiment with both expected and unexpected combinations, leading to exciting gameplay discoveries (that I can't wait to read about).
Basically, here's what you should know
Forgotten Mines' encompasses three key areas crucial for progression. Firstly, the Magic Shop offers a variety of Amulets that players can unlock and purchase using Gems, each granting unique bonuses that can significantly impact gameplay. Secondly, in the Barracks, players unlock new classes for future expeditions. Lastly, the Guilds will let you invest Kingdom Coins into various Guilds, acquiring new passive abilities that enhance your power with each investment.
Introducing new Meta content
One concern that weighed heavily on my mind was the risk of power creep when introducing new content. I believe it's okay for there to be a certain unevenness, or even a stratification of content: not every Pokémon needs to be Arceus and not everything needs to be Rattata. The key is to establish different tiers with defined limits, ensuring balance and diversity. Based on this, creating additional content becomes a little simpler and more objective. Not to mention that “Arceus” are more expensive and more difficult to obtain than “Rattatas”, wink wink.

Anyway, thank you for reading, I'm looking forward to you trying out the game with its brand new demo!

And don't forget: Forgotten Mines will be available on July 23rd!
