Happy one year anniversary of Death Trick: Double Blind!
This has been a long year for us and we have been busy since, but this is a good time to look back at this game.
It was our first time creating a game world and characters from scratch, turning them from silhouettes to character sprites, to animations and CGs; turning them from vague age and job descriptions to fully fleshed-out characters with their own backstories, desires, fears, and hopes. We weren't just writing a case, contradictions and alibis, but also all the minor, memorable moments in their lives: the pebbles that sunk into the water, the ostrich racing on the highway, the doodles on a set of tarot cards, the engravings on the old puppet sealed away into a box... And the end of a golden era.
During the two and half years of production for this game, we spent every waking moment with these characters in our heads. And it might sound a little silly, but they felt incredibly real to us. I found myself doing things like sending a vintage outfit video to Jenny saying "Hattie!", or coming up with a silly pun and immediately yelling out, "Chip!"
By the time we finished the game, it was like these characters had become my dear friends, and releasing the game felt like a goodbye to them. And going back to this game again feels like a melancholic reunion. We know they will always exist-- if only briefly, on the screens of every player who decides to jump into the story.
When we were making this game, we often imagined and joked about who they'd become in this modern era: where they'd be, what clothes they'd be wearing. So, here's a little Modern AU art for you all. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for playing Death Trick: Double Blind.
