Discover: the Horizon

In this update we’re giving you a look at Horizon, the first real safe spot you reach after pushing through the brutal opening of Permafrost. Robyn Cane built this place on top of an isolated hill, cut off by rivers and rifts, all to keep trouble as far away as possible. No politics, no cults, no power games. Just people trying to stay alive together.

Horizon is where you get your footing. Through small tasks, conversations and trading runs, you learn how to keep your heat up, craft what you need and deal with the everyday pressure of living in the cold. This is also where you meet Mule, the old travelling merchant who shows up often enough that he starts feeling like part of the journey.

What makes Horizon special is how grounded it is. Food is tight, tempers rise, and every bit of warmth matters. Between outings, you can rest here, trade for supplies and figure out your next move without someone trying to shoot you or convert you.

Robyn and Mule return later in the story, so Horizon becomes more than just a tutorial spot. It’s the first place that feels like a home base.

Dev Log 2025 – Strengthening the Core
Core Systems & Performance
We’ve spent a lot of time optimizing how the game runs, from the network layer to internal performance logic.
 • Network communication is being refactored for lower latency and faster synchronization.
 • Performance improvements across the board will mean quicker loading times and steadier framerates
 • Multiplayer is now far more stable, with fewer desyncs and smoother sessions
 • These upgrades also make it easier (and cheaper) for us to add new features without breaking what’s already working
Gameplay Mechanics & Maintenance
The gameplay layer is getting some major love too.
 • The upcoming Gameplay Ability System (GAS), will open doors for richer character abilities and more responsive combat
 • Revised mechanics are now modular, so we can expand systems without massive reworks
 • Improvements to damage, cleanup, and balancing ensure fairer, more predictable gameplay
 • These changes will also make future maintenance faster and safer for the dev team - meaning fewer bugs and faster updates
AI & Behavior
Our AI systems will become smarter, faster, and more reliable.
 • Enemies and allies will respond more naturally with updated network logic
 • Synchronization improvements will reduce awkward delays and AI “freezes”
 • Expect more dynamic, consistent behavior during intense encounters
User Interface & Experience
We’re refining the look and feel of the interface to make your experience smoother and more intuitive.
 • UI rendering performance has been significantly optimized
 • Interface updates are now faster to roll out and easier to maintain
 • Cleaner, more consistent visuals improve clarity and usability
 • We’ve simplified some systems (like temperature indicators) for better readability at a glance
Environment & Weather
The Cold is once again the main Antagonist.
 • Weather systems have been restored and upgraded - rain, storms, and changing skies are back and better than ever
 • New dynamic weather effects influence gameplay and visibility
 • Rebalanced temperature mechanics make survival and exploration more immersive
 • Environmental logic has been refined for better consistency and realism
Quest & Content Systems
Behind the scenes, we’re rebuilding how quests and progression work.
 • A new Quest Chain System allows smoother transitions between missions
 • The quest backend has been reworked to eliminate progression bugs and simplify updates
 • Content management is more modular, meaning faster story and side quest delivery in upcoming patches
 • Quest pointer system has been enhanced, for improved navigation and location precision
What This Means Going Forward
These updates may be technical, but they unlock a lot of creative freedom and help us lay out the groundwork for what’s coming next.
tl;dr
• We can now add features faster, with fewer bugs and less maintenance overhead
 • Every system is more modular, making future updates easier and safer to deliver
 • You’ll see more content, smoother gameplay, and stronger performance as a direct result

Many thanks for your continued support, we can’t wait to see you in game!

Development Update Part 1

[p]Hello survivors,

First of all, thank you for your support and patience throughout the last year. Your dedication to providing critical feedback, suggestions, bug reports and technical troubleshooting during our demo was a literal game changer.

With your help, we have been able to lock in the vision for our Early Access release - we have been in the icy trenches since - focusing on improving the core elements of the game, including stability, performance, and key gameplay foundations.
[/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p]
So, this brings us to the release date.

Permafrost will release into Early Access in 2026

We want to bring the best possible Early Access release build to you - one that’s not rushed, but rather polished and with a solid foundation, built with your feedback, reports, and requests. In other words, it’s for the best. We know it sucks to wait, but hang in there and let the devs cook, it will be worth it.

And, for those of you that absolutely can’t wait to play, we will be hosting a playtest prior to the release. You can already request access on the store page:

[dynamiclink][/dynamiclink]With that news, we didn’t want to leave you without more information on Permafrost’s development, so next week we will be sharing a deep dive into what’s changing under the hood and what it means for your experience.

Many thanks for your continued support, we can’t wait to see you in game!

Your Permafrost Team

6 Essential Tools

[p]

In Permafrost, survival isn’t about luck - it’s about what you carry, and how you use it. Every tool has a purpose. Every swing, every shot, every move can mean the difference between walking away… or freezing where you fall.

We’ve put together a new video showing the tools that keep survivors alive when the world has already ended. They build, they protect, they destroy and when things go bad, they’re all you’ve got left. Watch the video and see what keeps you breathing when everything else turns to ice.
