This Doom II mod lets you rip and tear demons with your bare hands

When it comes to demons, we all love a bit of ripping and tearing - usually in the form of some good old Doom levels. But with the classic FPS game's fixation on ranged weapons, sometimes we can't help but wonder, "what if we could do this manually?" Fortunately, now there's an incredible Doom II mod that lets us do exactly that: beat up demons using Marquess of Queensberry rules.

Spotted by PC Gamer, Doom Fighters is a Doom II mod that shifts the perspective to third person and makes it into a straight-up brawler. You don't get a shotgun. You don't get a pulse rifle. You definitely don't get a BFG-9000. It's you, the Doomguy, and your two fists against every pinky demon and revenant that Hell can send within punching distance.

Modder edypagaza has added a 3D Doomguy model, which is important since you'll now be looking at yourself from the new third-person perspective all the time. You get light and heavy attacks, and can pull off cool moves like flips and roundhouse kicks - the trailer below even shows the Doomguy doing pro wrestling moves, grabbing zombiemen by the armpits, spinning them around, and then hurling them into next week.

Kicking demons off Earth with a generous application of bullets is swell, sure. A bit impersonal though, right? Thanks to this new Doom II mod, the Doomslayerguy can turn hell's residents into pools of blood with his own two fists. Doom Fighters turns yon classic FPS into a third-person brawler where you can uppercut and chuck baddies all over the place. You can snag it right now or just appreciate the excellent biff baffing demon slapping in this trailer.

This Doom 2 mod replaces the guns with terrible MS Paint drawings

Doom 2 has been out for a long time, and the Doom modding community is still endlessly creative with finding ways to add to, change, or completely remake the classic series of gory FPS games. Other modders have other goals in mind, however. There's a new mod out called 'Doom 2 but the guns look bad,' which replaces all the weapon artwork in Doom 2 with a version that looks like it was made in Microsoft Paint, probably because it was.

'Doom 2 but the guns look bad' doesn't touch anything else in Doom 2, it just makes the guns look bad. Modder TechIguess explains on the ModDB page: "Yup, I literally just took Doom 2 and redrew the weapon models to make them look worse." If you were to judge the mod by how well it accomplishes the goals the modder set out for it, it's a smashing success: all these guns look extremely bad.

Take the chaingun, for instance. Normally it's shown as a series of silver barrels bound together toward the muzzles, with hand-drawn lighting effects showing that it's made of reflective metal. The modded version looks like an icon for a fence.

Send Thatcher back to Hell in this new Doom 2 mod today

Following a short delay caused by Tennent's Lager (actual true story), Margaret Thatcher has returned from Hell to menace us once more. Thankfully, one doomed space marine will stand up and venture into the tenth circle of Hell (aka the UK) to put the reviled British prime minister down for good. Thatcher's Techbase is its name, and Doom 2 is the game you'll need to play this free mod now it's out. It is quite the thing, and even has a custom soundtrack from Paradise Killer's composer.

Here's Doom 2 made entirely out of cardboard (and John Romero)

There's a YouTube channel dedicated to recreating classic games using a very unusual medium - cardboard - and it's more than a little impressive. The channel, named simply Games Made of Cardboard, has captured the essence of a whole bunch of retro titles via this very manual and creative medium, and its creator Bill Thorpe has now unveiled the latest: Doom 2 made of cardboard.

Describing Doom 2's latest port as his "most ambitious and creative project to date" and a "personal tribute to one of my most treasured games of all time", the creator explains that the project took them an eye-watering nine months to complete, adding he's "both happy and relieved to have completed it". After nine months and plenty of hard work - as you can see through the various 'making of'-style videos of it on the channel - it's easy to see why, but the final result is worth it.

The clip below showcases the final thing - Doom 2 as played via cardboard. The classic FPS game's levels are recreated painstakingly, with combat encounters, gun and destruction effects, and even Doom Guy's snarling (and sometimes bloody) avatar faithfully remade. Not to mention, John Romero himself has jumped into the fun, recreating his role as the famous 'Romero's Head' Doom 2 easter egg.
