John Romero's Doom 2 level raises over €25K for Ukrainian relief

March 7, 2022: John Romero's new Doom 2 level for Ukrainian relief has raised over €25,000 so far.

John Romero is one of PC gaming's most legendary figures, and he's out here continuing to create new levels for his most famous works. Sigil released in 2019 as a free, unofficial fifth episode for the original Doom, and now Romero has released a new, paid Doom II level supporting humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.

The level is called One Humanity, and it's available for €5.00 (about $5.80 USD) on Romero's website. Every penny, as Romero explains on Twitter, goes to the Red Cross and the UN Central Emergency Response Fund. You'll need to make use of a modern Source port of Doom II in order to play the .WAD file.

The new Doom 2 level for charity was announced and released on May 3, and now just four days later, John Romero has announced that their efforts have raised over €25,000 for Ukrainian relief - which is around $27.3K USD or £20.6K GBP - and the count is still going up.

Doom Shinobi mod is basically a new Ninja Gaiden

It seems like every day there's a new Doom mod that completely blows away our understanding of what Doom mods can achieve - from open-world apocalypse to Golden Axe. Now the Doom Shinobi mod threatens to add Doom to the best sword games on PC, as it turns the shooter into basically Ninja Gaiden 4.

The new Doom Shinobi mod is out now and can be downloaded from ModDB. Creator edypagaza says they aimed "to bring and experience a new gameplay style for players" and they have definitely done just that. While there is some similarity to the third-person melee combat mod for Doom II, that's based more on weaponless hand-to-hand combat.

Doom Shinobi, on the other hand, is all about awesome and ridiculous swordplay. The mod adds a traditional ninja blade, a ridiculous Final Fantasy VII-like broadsword, and throwing weapons like shurikens and kunai knives. Players can unleash multiple combo types and even magic powers against the demons. It really is quite insane.

If there's one thing the original Doom games aren't short on, it's fantastic mods that completely change the experience. New Doom mod Siren is a creepy new survival horror take in the style of System Shock, F.E.A.R., Prey, and Aliens - and there's a new demo to try out now.

While id Software tried its hand at a Doom survival horror game with Doom 3 nearly 20 years ago, the more recent games like the fantastic Doom Eternal have put more emphasis on action over creepiness. This leaves room for modders to make their own horror takes on Doom, something they regularly deliver on.

Siren is a new mod made by creator Dithered Output and has been in development for at least two years - and the latest 0.6 build is playable right now in a new demo. The modder says that they aimed to create "an experience closer to an Aliens game but with the variety and gameplay benefits the roster of Doom monsters brings".

Doom II mod Ashes 2063 is now a standalone free game

One of the more ambitious modding projects for Doom II has become its own standalone free game. Ashes: Afterglow now includes two full episodes of post-apocalyptic, Mad Max action, and it's available for downloading if you've ever wanted to drive around through the ruins of Atlanta on a motorcycle with machine guns on it.

Ashes: Afterglow is one of the most convincing throwbacks to '80s B-tier action movies I've ever seen, and it began life as a total conversion mod for Doom II, although it's grown a lot over the course of the past six years. Lead modder Vostyok says it's inspired by Doom's action, the big open Build Engine levels of Duke Nukem 3D, and the vibes of the Stalker series, and you can see that all on display in the trailer below.

You'll have to scavenge and fight your way through the ruins of an America devastated by a cataclysmic nuclear explosion in Atlanta, locking horns with raiders, mutants, vicious animals, and supernatural enemies borne out of the ambient radiation left in the wake of the disaster.

When it comes to demons, we all love a bit of ripping and tearing - usually in the form of some good old Doom levels. But with the classic FPS game's fixation on ranged weapons, sometimes we can't help but wonder, "what if we could do this manually?" Fortunately, now there's an incredible Doom II mod that lets us do exactly that: beat up demons using Marquess of Queensberry rules.

Spotted by PC Gamer, Doom Fighters is a Doom II mod that shifts the perspective to third person and makes it into a straight-up brawler. You don't get a shotgun. You don't get a pulse rifle. You definitely don't get a BFG-9000. It's you, the Doomguy, and your two fists against every pinky demon and revenant that Hell can send within punching distance.

Modder edypagaza has added a 3D Doomguy model, which is important since you'll now be looking at yourself from the new third-person perspective all the time. You get light and heavy attacks, and can pull off cool moves like flips and roundhouse kicks - the trailer below even shows the Doomguy doing pro wrestling moves, grabbing zombiemen by the armpits, spinning them around, and then hurling them into next week.
