Former Awesomenauts developers finish the game they were working on when the studio went bankrupt in 2023, and it'll be free for the first 24 hours after release

wesomenauts developer Ronimo Games filed for bankruptcy in 2023, bringing a premature end to an unnamed project it had in development. But a year later, four former members of the studio including the CEO got back together to form a new studio called Rangatang and resumed work on the project, which is now set to launch on May 15—and if you grab it within the first 24 hours of release, it's yours to keep forever...

Nublog #10 | The Road to Nubs!

Hey, you Nub!

This week, we’re diving into the origins of Nubs!, how the game came to life, the inspiration behind its chaotic fun, and the journey of how a simple dungeon crawler was molded into a full-fledged multiplayer arena game.

So sit back, grab your favorite snack, we've got a story to tell.

Once upon a time in the Netherlands, a passionate gaming studio known as Ronimo Games carved a niche for themselves in the gaming world. Their creations, notably Awesomenauts and Blightbound, were celebrated for their accessibility and competitive depth, captivating players worldwide. This success fueled their ambition, leading them to conceptualize a new project, a whimsical, Zelda-esque dungeon crawler with a multiplayer twist, featuring quirky characters embarking on grand adventures, wielding unconventional weapons to vanquish formidable bosses.

However, as the project progressed, unforeseen challenges began to surface. Plans shifted, obstacles mounted, and circumstances beyond the team's control created an uphill battle. In the end, the development of the Zelda-esque game came to an abrupt and unfortunate halt, leaving its future uncertain.

Yet, from this adversity, a new hope emerged. Four former members of Ronimo were determined to create something simple and fun and to do justice to the great work done by Ronimo. These were Maarten ( Ronimo's Lead Programmer), Machiel (Ronimo's Core Tech Programmer), Olivier (Ronimo's CEO), and Gijs (Ronimo's Concept Artist).

When they played the game with Belgian developer Glowfish Interactive, they hit it off so well that they decided to join powers and together create the game you now know as Nubs!

This partnership breathed new life into the project, giving the team the opportunity to not only refine upon their original vision but also to salvage and repurpose a vast number of assets from their previous work. Instead of starting from scratch, they reworked existing designs, environments, and mechanics, ensuring that the heart of their original game lived on in Nubs!. With renewed determination, they pressed forward, transforming setbacks into opportunities and crafting an experience that hopefully everyone will enjoy!
