DevUpdate: Playtests

Hello to all the fans of building, modeling, and creating!

I need to update you on the current situation because, even though not much time has passed since the last post, a lot has happened. Really, a lot!

Let me start by saying that last month I wrapped up the first version of the demo. I was very pleased with the result and sent it to a professional tester.

However, my enthusiasm didn’t last very long. A few days later, I received a gameplay recording. That video turned out to be the most emotional footage I’ve ever seen in my life, and trust me, I’ve seen a lot of movies. The death of Mufasa, the opening of Finding Nemo, or Up were all incredibly impactful on me, but none of them could compare to the video showing someone’s first interaction with Outside the Blocks. I’ll admit it openly: during the scene where the tester spent 30 minutes struggling to place a simple window, more than one tear rolled down my cheeks.

The tester’s final review was rather lukewarm. While the visuals were appreciated, many aspects seemed unclear, and several features were never discovered at all.
That was the moment I realized there was still quite a bit of work ahead of me. I made a detailed list of all the problems and minor bugs, which totaled slightly over 30 items. Naturally, I addressed and fixed every single one of them, but the biggest upgrade was yet to come.

I needed to add a tutorial.
Wow! The game needs a tutorial — what a surprise?!
Well, no, it wasn’t a huge surprise. But honestly, I’d been holding out hope for a long time that the game would stand on its own. I always wanted Outside the Blocks to be so intuitive and simple that it wouldn’t require any explanation. I wanted every player to look at the icons and say, “Got it, let’s build some dioramas.”
And surely, there will be players like that! But I didn’t want my reluctance to stop players who prefer to understand something before they start playing.

I worked on the tutorial nonstop for over a week.

A few days ago, I sent it to a small group of people to see how it fared this time. And… it’s hard to describe what happened as anything other than a success! The general feedback seems much more positive:

The game is more complex than I thought it would be based on the video, but that’s because it offers so many possibilities.

There were 2-3 points where the instructions were less clear than they should have been, and a few minor bugs were found. It looks like no major overhauls are needed anymore. I’m moving forward, analyzing, learning, and improving. Hopefully, I’ll be able to release the demo to the public soon.

Keep your fingers crossed, and see you in the next Steam post!

Steam Store Page rework

Hello to all the fans of building, modeling, and creating!

Over the weekend, I gave the Steam store page a bit of a refresh! 🎉

To mark the occasion, I’ve also uploaded a brand-new super short teaser trailer that does a much better job showcasing the current state of the game!

I’d really appreciate it if you could help spread the word across the internet.

I hope to have some exciting news to share with you all soon! In the meantime, it’s back to work for me!

Check out my wife's first Diorama

Hello to all the fans of building, modeling, and creating!

I’m beyond excited to share a special milestone with you today! 🎉 This moment is particularly close to my heart because it marks the very first closed playtest session of Outside the Blocks—and the honor went to none other than... my wife! ❤️

She’s been my biggest supporter throughout the development process, and she just completed her first playthrough. Her diorama creation? An incredible "Abandoned mansion on a dark, rainy night." 🌧🏚️

Watching her build it was a surreal experience — especially since I had to stay quiet the whole time to avoid jumping in with tips! I’m so proud of her work, and seeing her fully immersed in the gameplay was a special moment for me as a developer.

The current build is still an internal test, so it’s not ready for public release just yet. But the feedback from these early sessions is already helping me shape and improve the game. I can't wait to smooth out the rough edges and eventually let all of you dive in to create your own dream dioramas.

Thanks for being a part of this journey, and I’ll see you in the next Steam post!

DevUpdate: Animals

Hello to all fans of building, modeling, and creating!

I’ve got some exciting news to share!
Animated animals are now part of Outside the Blocks! This feature has been on my list for ages, and I’m thrilled to finally see it come to life. Here’s Peter the Pig in his natural habitat (alongside some friends)!

Initially, I wanted them to walk around the parcel, but after a few tests, I found that keeping the animals stationary better fits the game’s vision. Adding full movement felt like it would push Outside the Blocks toward creating an entire ecosystem or simulation, which isn’t the direction I’m aiming for. Instead, precision in placing each element is key, allowing everyone to showcase their own creative ideas rather than random or chaotic scenes.

What I do think fits perfectly into these miniature worlds, however, is giving each animal a choice of animations and poses. The options are limited for now, but I’ll keep working to expand them.

I’m really happy with how creatures bring scenes to life! Currently, I’ve mainly added farm animals, including:

 • Pig,
 • Sheep,
 • Cow,
 • Goat,
 • Chicken!

My goal is to add more animals over time. Next up, I’m thinking of a goose and maybe a couple of woodland creatures — a wild boar, perhaps? Or maybe a moose or a bear?

Are there any animals you’d love to add to your diorama?
Let me know in the comments, and see you in the next Steam post!

The holiday season is a wild time.

Imagine spending days battling to finalize the last features. You’re feeling doubly satisfied because you managed to finish just in time for your long-awaited trip to the mountains. With a big grin on your face, you wander through forests, meadows, and bushes.

Then, out of nowhere, you see it—a beautiful, patch of land. It’s on the edge of a plot, by some fence, in the middle of nowhere... And you immediately know you have to add this as a preset. This is what’s been missing from Outside the Block. You quickly snap pictures and start brainstorming. The rest of the trip is ruined. All you can think about is the clay, the round stones, and the tangled tufts of thin green grass.

You start scheming, drawing diagrams on napkins in restaurants, and jotting notes on your phone. You keep scrolling through the photos, searching for every detail.

When you get back home, you dive into implementing the first version. Then, you sit down and cry because it doesn’t look right. The grass is too thick, the soil’s color is off. You’re down for two days, even though this wasn’t something you needed to do at all.

You feel frustrated for a moment, but then you sit down, make adjustments, and in the end, you basically rework everything. A few days later, you’re exhausted, yet it finally works—just in time for your next trip. Now, though, you realize that trip won’t bring you joy either, as you’ll inevitably spot something new you’ll want to turn into a preset.

I guess true relaxation is just another challenge to overcome…
But hey, at least it gives me new ideas!
