Today we continue our Hero Spotlight series with a closer look at Ketil Whiteye, a mysterious and formidable presence drawn from the mythic tapestry of Glorantha. This character sheet is inspired by the classic RuneQuest RPG format, reimagined for RuneQuest: Warlords, our battle-scale turn-based strategy game.



Ketil Whiteye is a powerful priestess who leads warriors into battle under the shadow of Orlanth’s blade.
Though her skill in direct combat may fall short compared to other commanders, she more than makes up for it with the strength of the runes and Orlanth’s blessing. Ketil can heal and empower her soldiers in battle, turning even the weakest fighters into a force to be reckoned with.

Hero Spotlight: Hahlgrim Ironsword

Today we launch our very first Hero Spotlight, featuring Hahlgrim Ironsword, a character sheet inspired by the RuneQuest RPG format, adapted for RuneQuest: Warlords, our battle-scale turn-based strategy game.
Each spotlight will focus on four heroes, offering a deeper look into the legendary world of Glorantha and its fiercest champions.



Hahlgrim Ironsword is the incarnate of the storm - a mighty warrior who cuts down his foes on the battlefield and a measured commander beyond it. He is the main protagonist of the campaign and a champion of the Talastar. In his cruside for vengeance against Dorastor, he must prove himself both as a formidable frontline fighter and as an inspiring leader, guiding his people to victory.

RuneQuest: Warlords is a turn-based tactics game set in the enchanting world of RuneQuest, steeped in the culture of the Bronze Age where gods and mortals intertwine through magic.



[h3]Warlords gameplay features[/h3]
Turn-based combat
Engage in skirmish battles where players command their armies on grid-based maps. Players can maneuver their forces with precision, launching calculated attacks on enemy troops. Each move and decision can turn the tide of battle, making every encounter a test of wits.



Army rosters
Assemble diverse and formidable armies by selecting units from your chosen faction to create a roster that matches your strategic vision. Each unit is equipped with unique weapons and magical abilities, offering a rich tapestry of options. Some units also provide different loadout choices, adding depth to your strategy.



Momentum mechanics
Momentum adds a dynamic layer to the battlefield. This unique currency is earned through actions in battle or by following faction traits. When a unit reaches its Momentum cap, it unlocks powerful advantages: gaining an extra action point or activating empowered abilities. This system rewards tactical play and encourages continuous engagement, making each battle thrilling and immersive.



Faction trait bonuses
Each faction is designed with unique bonuses that enhance its playstyle. As units accumulate Momentum, these bonuses grow stronger, rewarding players for aligning with their faction's strategic flow. Talastar excels in active movement, gaining power and agility. The Lunar Empire thrives in formations, enhancing resilience and precision. Chaos grows fiercer with losses, harnessing unstable power through sacrifice.



Various game modes
RuneQuest: Warlords offers a variety of game modes:
  • Campaign Mode: Embark on an epic journey through 18 meticulously crafted missions set in the fantastical realm of Glorantha. Each mission unfolds a captivating story.
  • Skirmish Mode: Test your strategies by replaying campaign missions with any chosen roster or face off against AI opponents on multiplayer maps. This mode provides endless replayability and opportunities to refine your tactics.
  • Multiplayer Mode: Engage in thrilling battles against other players. Compete in intense matches with three distinct objectives and various maps where factions clash in epic battles.
  • Hot Seat Mode: Experience local multiplayer by sharing the game on a single device with a friend, almost like having a fantasy chessboard.




[h3]Ability kits[/h3]
Inspired by the rich lore of the RuneQuest setting, RuneQuest: Warlords features a vast array of magical abilities that stay true to the world’s tenets. Each unit boasts its own unique kit, reflecting their deep connection to the gods, their specialization, and their role on the battlefield.

Wind Warp
High Priestesses manipulate the winds, accelerating friendly ranged attacks to deliver devastating strikes to enemies


Flameblade
A common spell cast on sharp-bladed weapons, corrupted by Broo champions for more devastating effect.


Venomous Slash
Wyverns' tail slashes are deadly, with venom ensuring their attacks are exceedingly lethal.


Thunderbolt
Exclusive to faction heroes, this ability allows worshippers of Orlanth to summon a devastating volt of lightning, turning the tide of battle.

The world of Glorantha is vast and immense, filled with countless epics of heroism, struggle, and survival. When we set out to tell a new tale within this universe, we faced an overwhelming challenge: which of its many conflicts and cultures should we focus on? Glorantha is a land teeming with myth, war, and political intrigue, and narrowing our scope to a single region or faction was no small task.
We ultimately chose to focus on the Orlanthi, one of the most dynamic and numerous peoples in Glorantha. Their culture is rich with tradition, their pantheon brimming with gods of war, storm, and justice. But even within the Orlanthi, there are many different tribes and regions—Talastar, Aggar, the Empire of Saird, each with its own struggles and history. After much deliberation, we decided that Talastar best fit the themes we wanted to explore: resilience in the face of overwhelming odds, the struggle between tradition and change, and the ever-present threat of Chaos.

[h3]The Setting: A Land Under Siege[/h3]


The Talastar Orlanthi are caught in a perilous situation. To the north looms the ever-expanding Lunar Empire, a behemoth of political and military might that seeks to assimilate or crush those who resist its influence. To the south, the twisted, Chaos-tainted Broo launch relentless raids, spreading disease and corruption wherever they tread. Even within Talastar itself, tribal rivalries and internal conflicts prevent a unified defense against these threats. It is a land in turmoil, where survival is not guaranteed and where heroes must rise to forge a future for their people.
It is in this brutal and unforgiving landscape that our story takes place—the saga of Hahlgrim Ironsword, a warrior whose legend will be shaped by the choices he makes and the trials he endures.



[h3]The Hero’s Journey[/h3]


Hahlgrim begins his journey returning home, weary from past battles, only to find his land desecrated by Chaos. The attack is not random—it is part of a calculated series of brutal raids orchestrated by Woowandor, a fearsome and elusive Broo warlord. Vengeance becomes Hahlgrim’s driving force, but this is not merely a story of revenge—it is a tale of duty, honor, and the heavy burden of leadership.



His pursuit of Woowandor will take him deep into the dreaded land of Dorastor, a realm swallowed by Chaos, where reality itself bends and twists in unnatural ways. Along the way, Hahlgrim will encounter allies—other Orlanthi warriors, rival clans with their own agendas, and even unexpected figures from outside his people.



[h3]Staying True to Glorantha’s Legacy[/h3]
In creating this story, we drew deeply from the established lore of Glorantha. Every decision—from the depiction of Talastar’s political struggles to the portrayal of figures like Hahlgrim, Woowandor, Ralzakark, and Hakon the Swimmer—was made with respect for the source material. These are not characters invented from thin air; they are figures who exist within the world of RuneQuest, and we aimed to honor their place in the timeline while weaving a compelling new narrative.

Adhering to Glorantha’s intricate history meant ensuring that our story did not contradict established events or create narrative paradoxes. We carefully studied the lore to maintain consistency, making sure that Hahlgrim’s actions align with the broader world and that his journey feels like a natural extension of Glorantha’s living history.


This is a story of survival, war, and the weight of destiny. Hahlgrim Ironsword’s journey is not just about slaying monsters or seeking vengeance—it is about what it means to be Orlanthi in an age of upheaval, where the very existence of his people is at stake. Every battle, every decision, and every alliance forged will shape the future of Talastar.

[h3]Why Glorantha?[/h3]
Our choice of Glorantha, the legendary world crafted by Chaosium, was driven by its unique Bronze Age setting. Unlike traditional medieval or fantasy worlds, Glorantha is shaped by gods, driven by myth, and ruled by powerful factions locked in constant war. It’s a place where faith is as powerful as steel, and battlefields become arenas of divine intervention and strategic mastery.



Glorantha is a world steeped in myth, where gods shape the land, magic is a force as real as metal, and every battle is part of a larger struggle for power and survival. It’s a world of warring factions, divine interventions, and legendary heroes, making it the perfect foundation for a deep and tactical war game.



Our goal is to capture the essence of Glorantha’s conflicts through turn-based battles that emphasize positioning, unit synergy, and battle mastery. Here you’ll wield god-given powers, rune magic, and divine blessings, which can quickly turn the tide of any battle.



Whether commanding fierce Orlanthi warriors from Talastar, the disciplined legions of the Lunar Empire, or even savage hordes of Chaos, players will see each faction presented in its own unique and stylistic manner.



In our work, we have remained true to the fundamental themes and creations lovingly crafted by the makers of RuneQuest. We took existing creatures and factions and sought to restore their faded splendor while preserving their uniqueness and staying faithful to their original vision.

[h3]What about our first campaign?[/h3]
Warlords of Glorantha is a story of tactical battles set in the harsh times of the Bronze Age. Armies clash under the banners of their gods, fighting for dominance and survival in the diverse world of Glorantha.



Our story follows Hahlgrim, a Talastarian hero from the Bilings tribe, who ventures deep into the cursed Chaos-tainted forests of Dorastor to seek vengeance against the ruthless raider Woowandor, the one who shattered his homeland.
But this is no ordinary battle. As Hahlgrim journeys deeper, he will face twisted Chaos beasts, corrupted warriors, and ancient horrors beyond imagination. Every battle is more than just survival - it’s a test of will, faith, and tactical mastery.



We eagerly look forward to sharing new details about the plot campaign and the latest updates on the development of RuneQuest: Warlords.
