An Update From Bex

As many of you may have seen, I recently made a big announcement on Twitter. Naturally, I will be taking some time off to be with my family and I wanted to make sure I keep the Path of Exile community in the loop as to what to expect from us for the next while.

I expect to take six months of parental leave, but may be able to return earlier. I suspect it's likely that I will be periodically checking in behind the scenes to make sure things are running smoothly.

As we mentioned earlier this week, we're expecting to post our 3.8.0 announcement around August 20th. While I might not be taunting the community from my Twitter or clouding our subreddit with silly gifs, you'll still receive all the normal announcements and teasers you would expect around an expansion launch.

Natalia, one of our other Community Managers, may already be familiar to you as the person who frequently writes and posts Path of Exile news. She does a tonne behind the scenes and I feel very confident with her scheduling news and teasers in my absence. She will also be working with Chris and the rest of the community team to ensure that significant community concerns that may arise are heard and addressed.

Hartlin, one of our game designers and producers, frequently posts on the subreddit and will also be keeping an eye out for community issues for the team to address. You may see him posting to address hot topics and server RIPs, etc.

As always, Chris will be overseeing everything and ready to guide the team in any decisions that need to be made. As you know, he's also notorious for causing mass hysteria so I trust you'll be in good hands.

Unfortunately, taking leave also means that I'm unlikely to be able to attend ExileCon. This is going to be super weird! I was very much looking forward to meeting everyone there and I'm so sorry that I most likely won't be able to make it. I've heard the team's plans for the convention weekend and it sounds like you'll have so much to think about that you won't even notice I'm not there!

Thank you so much to everyone who shared their well wishes and support to my initial announcement. I was extremely blown away with how many caring messages I received. It's going to be really strange to be away from the community and I will definitely miss being part of everything here for a little bit but I will be back! Side note - if you think you might need something from me over the next few months, particularly if you're a streamer, please get in touch ASAP!

What We're Working On

We're over half way through the Legion league and we're incredibly happy with how much the community have been enjoying it. As you continue to complete your personal league goals, we wanted to give you a heads up about our upcoming timelines.

As we mentioned, on August 17th PDT, we'll be hosting the last of our ExileCon Race Event Qualifiers! This race will dictate who our fourth and final challenger will be in the ultimate showdown at ExileCon later this year.

Around August 20th PDT, we're planning to announce our 3.8.0 expansion! The broad scope of this release is a new challenge league (whose name is not on the list, but should be), various improvements to older master content (things like making Sulphite and Betrayal state shared between all your characters in the league), some systems changes we're not yet ready to hint at (which should improve some areas that the community have given us vocal feedback on (not trade)) and all the usual new items, archetypes, gems and so on that you expect from a Path of Exile expansion.

We expect the Legion league to end on PC at 3pm September 2nd PDT. For console players, the league will end when 3.8.0 goes live.

Our tentative release date for the new expansion is September 6th PDT. Keep in mind all these dates may change as we get closer to release but things are looking good so far. We will keep you posted as these dates approach to let you know if anything changes.

The Grinding Gear Games ExileCon Qualifier Event

Over the weekend, we ran the third of our ExileCon qualifier events where players competed to be the first to kill Atziri. Congratulations to the winners of this event! We look forward to seeing you at the ExileCon finale in New Zealand!

We're pleased to announce the fourth and final qualifier event for the ExileCon race finale. On August 17th at 2 PM (PDT) we'll be hosting a race event with a VIP ExileCon package as the grand prize. This means the winner will be flown to New Zealand, invited to the VIP dinner, have their accommodation and convention tickets paid for as well as participate against the other three finalists in the ExileCon race finale.

Players will compete in a Standard Solo-Self Found environment to be the first to kill Kitava in Act Five. There will be a death penalty - if you die, you'll not be able to move or do anything with your character for 60 seconds. This penalty was added because we want to create the feeling of a hardcore event (where deaths basically eliminate you from contention for first place), while not running the risk of accidentally eliminating most of the finalists if they are unlucky at the final event. 60 seconds is a large penalty, so play as carefully as you need to in order to avoid dying!

The event will open for four hours although it's likely that first place will be taken within two hours.

The event is open to all who would like to participate and takes place in a separate event league so that there are no limits to the number of participants who may join. You'll be able to join the event under the character selection screen when it becomes available.

Prizes 1st Place
  • VIP ExileCon Ticket (Access to the convention and VIP dinner).
  • Flights to New Zealand.
  • Accommodation for the convention weekend.
  • Entrance into the ExileCon race event finale.

In addition, the top five kill times will be awarded with a microtransaction package. We'll announce the contents of this package later.

As per other community events, we'll have shoutcasters and a place where you can view the event! More information will be published in the coming weeks, so keep an eye on the news!
