Wanted Dead or Alive #3: Please meet Lady Valerie 🗡️

Greetings, friends!

It's good to see you for the third issue of "Wanted Dead or Alive". After introducing you to the Soulslinger and Death in the last two weeks, it's now Lady Valerie's turn. Like the Soulslinger itself, Lady Valerie also works as an envoy for Death.

So, lear the stage and raise the curtain for Lady Valerie:

Valerie - or as she emphasizes Lady Valerie - was once a poor woman called Diane Roux, begging for food for her and her daughter on the streets of Paris. But Diane died unexpectedly, and her desperate efforts to return to life and help her child ended in tragedy as she accidentally damaged the dead soul of the very daughter she meant to save.

Horrified and heartbroken, she made a deal with Death to atone for her sins ... though the scars of her spirit would always remain. Now reborn in Death’s service as Lady Valerie "the Huntress", she works as one of Death’s most dedicated and lethal agents.

Outwardly cold and reserved, Valerie is professional and focused almost to a fault, holding her peers at arm's length; only after Soulslinger offers her sincere friendship that she begins to defrost. In truth, she harbors deep pain and guilt over what she did to her daughter, and the fact that there's nothing she can do to fix it.

Her guilt also drives her to be particularly protective of helpless souls and aggressive towards Cartel warlords.

Next week's "Wanted Dead or Alive" issue will deal with one of the main enemies that the Soulslinger will have to fight in limbo: The Cursed King. And in the week after that Soulslinger: Envoy of Death will finally release into Early Access. Exciting!

So long, friends. Have a great time!

The Loops of Limbo #2: Fight, die, upgrade, repeat 🔁

Heya friends!

With less than 20 days until the Early Access release it's right on time for the second issue of "The Loops of Limbo"! Today with a topical issue: I've seen that Soulslinger is often described as a first person shooter - and true, that's basically what the game is. But not only that, as Soulslinger: Envoy of Death is a roguelite FPS.

You don't need to explain how a first person shooter works, do you? Run, aim, shoot, stay alive. As easy as it gets. And that's where the "roguelite" apsect comes into play. And exactly where "easy" ends.

In the "Well of Tears" the skills of the Soulslinger are constantly improved

Soulslinger is a run-based game in which you will die often. Very often. Because that's exactly what the game is designed around. Though dying ends your current run and causes you to lose most of your temporary buffs, there is also the "meta-progression". You collect resources that stick with you even when you die and you can spend them on permanent upgrades that make you stronger in the long run.

Our core design philosophy with Soulslinger: Envoy of Death is to respect the player's time as much as possible. This is why even a 5 or 10 minute run can yield significant progress, you can work towards getting that next upgrade or crafting that new equipment that you wanted.

In the "Workshop" you can unlock and upgrade weapons and relics

The game's story also progresses even when you die. NPCs react to what you've experienced in limbo, give advice on how to proceed and sometimes, new details are revealed.

Next week, in the third issue of "The Loops of Limbo", I'll tell you more about the buffs and powers available in Soulslinger and how they can be combined into powerful combos.

Stay tuned and talk to you then.
Ede out.

Wanted Dead or Alive #2: Are you ready to meet Death? 💀

It's good to see you, gunslingers!

And welcome to the second issue of "Wanted Dead or Alive". After you got to know the Soulslinger last week, this week the focus is on his "employer". And since the Soulslinger is a gunslinger in limbo, he is on a mission from none other than Death.

So, let's hear it for none other than Mr. Afterlife himself:

Cold, calm, neutral, and implacable, there is nothing human about Death… for better or for worse. The ruler of Haven and the afterlife, Death rules with an impartial and unemotional hand, letting good and evil souls alike find peace in the Gate, the final destination of all souls. He recruits many of the stronger souls as Envoys of Death, sending them out as his enforcers and tasking them with rounding up souls bound for the Gate… and exacting punishment on those who would disrupt the cycle.

Harsh but fair and endlessly patient, Death offers neither compassion nor judgement to those in his care; he takes his duties seriously and is a cold but respectful master to his Envoys.

Next week's "Wanted Dead or Alive" issue will deal with a character that you might have already met in the Soulslinger: Envoy of Death demo: Lady Valerie.

So long, friends. Have a great time!

🤠 The Loops of Limbo #1: From Sci-Fi to Afterlilfe

Greetings, friends!

It's Ede again. I would like to use the coming weeks until the Early Access release of Soulslinger: Envoy of Death not only to tell you more about the most important characters of the game. Nope, I will also use the "The Loops of Limbo" to tell you more about the evolution of Soulslinger - from the idea to the Early Access release.

Let's get right into it with the very first issue "The Loops of Limbo #1: From Sci-Fi to Afterlilfe":

Back in early 2021, Soulslinger: Envoy of Death originally started out as a sci-fi roguelite. It would've been set in a mysterious cave on an alien planet and you would've descended deeper and deeper into the cave until finally you've uncovered all its secrets. The problem was that as soon as we started working on that game concept, Returnal was released and it looked eerily similar to what we were making, down to the dark sci-fi setting and mysterious story.

Our publisher and I started talking about what we could do instead and I clearly remember when the publisher said "okay, tell us your most unique idea". So I dusted off my notes and looked at all the game ideas that haven't been realized so far (or, in some cases, never will be) and I thought "hmm, this idea of a gunslinger in the afterlife, trying to find his lost love is something that could work well for a roguelike".

There were already some game mechanics worked out for that particular concept, so I've presented this idea to our publisher. The rest, as they say, is history. And part of the next issue of "The Loops of Limbo" in the upcoming week.

Stay tuned and talk to you then.

Wanted Dead or Alive #1: Meet the Soulslinger! 🤠

Howdy fellow gunslingers!

As announced together with the Early Access release date (December 14 ːsteamhappyː) for Soulslinger: Envoy of Death earlier this week, it also marked the start of a series of update postings here on Steam that will introduce you to the game in more detail. And some of those are named "Wanted Dead or Alive".

In five short episodes until the Early Access release, we will introduce you to some of the characters from the game, starting of course with the protagonist himself: the Soulslinger.

The man once known as Jake became the Soulslinger, a gunslinging protector of souls that would fit with the twisted Western world that Limbo has become. Though still possessing memories (or, at least, lingering threads) of Jake, Soulslinger is an older, "damaged" version of his past self due to his soul’s trauma, a version that’s carrying more pain and scars: a little more wary, quiet, harsh, and sad. This actually makes him better suited for this lawless afterlife than he would have been before - and despite his new layer of trauma, his core goodness and warm heart are still there.

He and his wife died in a car accident, and he only accepts the fight against the cartel on behalf of Death in order to be reunited with his wife one day.

Next week's "Wanted Dead or Alive" issue will deal with a "character" from the game who doesn't really need to be introduced: Death himself. But we will do it anyway.

So long, friends. Have a great time!
