Devlog #4 - Spherical Grid, Square Tiles and Planet Sizes

Hi everyone πŸ‘‹

We're back with another Planetiles devlog and this time its inspired by a recurring question we're being asked - how in the world we have a spherical, curved surface and square blocks that wrap around it? 🀯

The short answer is - we sprinkled the planet with the quantum technology from the future!

The longer answer is...

... we experiment a lot with prototypes before you see any game content we share. With Planetiles, our initial goal was to create a thinky tile-based game and explore different genres at the same time. We picked city/settlement builders as we're all avid fans of such games, keeping in mind all the incoming challenges such as wrapping non-bend tiles around a sphere.
Spherical Grid vs Square Tiles
We knew that keeping tiles square will be critical for having a good overview of the map, so we decided to use a special projection instead of a regular sphere. The trick is that as soon as the tiles begin to move away from the center, their vertices are being bent and their Y coordinate is adjusted instead of following the sphere on which they'd be placed normally. Below, you can see this in action:

Below, you can see that the squares are actually not squares - they just have a deformed geometry and we set the deformation grading at a very low level that is only slightly visible. This gif presents fields that are 100% square and the ones that are deformed. Our preference lays somewhere in between:

The idea presented above quite heavily influences players ability to count squares quickly and decide upon the next move. Having squares helps players to navigate through the grid and focus on the important part - structures evolution and solving missions.
Planet sizes
In Planetiles, you'll encounter different planets. There will be a variety of themes, pole caps, weather and of course - the size. Currently we're focusing on 3 types:

Small planet - 360 squares total (9 vertical x 40 horizontal)
Large planet - 800 squares total (16 vertical x 50 horizontal)
Endless planet - no limit as the planet 'unwraps' like a rug

We might add another size and also look forward to see your ideas and suggestions - feel invited to join our official Discord channel and chat about Planetiles.

Devlog #3 - Early concepts and ideas behind Planetiles

Hi everyone πŸ‘‹

We're back with another devlog after sharing the most recent entry focused on cataclysms that players will need to face in Planetiles. Today, we're taking a trip down the memory lane showcasing some of the early ideas and concepts that made Planetiles what it is today. We came a long way from the initial decision to create a game somewhere between a citybuilder and a puzzler and made some visible progress as recently shared on Twitter/X:
Early structures concepts
Once settled on the grid-based 3D sphere that would become a future planet, we wanted to create an atmosphere of a remote, friendly and welcoming planet to help players relax. It was challenging to pick a proper color palette and art direction but we finally decided on cartoon-like, melancholic models that carry a bit of retrofuturistic vibes here and there - especially the built structures.
In search of a color palette
Below you can see some of the early screenshots from Planetiles as we had lots of fun playing with art direction, visual style and color schemes. First up, we experimented a bit with the general theme and colors looking for a perfect fit in presenting an eerie but welcoming planet, that initially looked a bit different:
Satellites design
How about the satellites? You probably saw one orbiting your planet and we had couple candidates before picking up the final design. We're opened to actually having them all available in game as separate unlockable skins - who knows! If you like this idea, let us know via discord. πŸ’¬
Ice cap and pole types
Every planet has a north & south pole and we also researched some of the alternatives of the most popular solution - the ice cap. In Planetiles, players will encounter planets that are covered in snow, however we're also working on couple other ideas, teased below.

That's it for now but stay tuned for more work-in-progress content as we continue to work on Planetiles. There is still a lot to unravel so make sure to share your feedback, impressions and ideas - we're always checking them out and prepared a separate Steam Discussions section for this occassion. You can also chat with us on Discord. Don't forget to wishlist Planetiles if you like our upcoming space haven builder!
