Yooka-Replaylee 2024 Roundup!

Hello folks!

As we approach the end of the year, I figured I'd collate a bunch of stuff into one place in case you're just joining us or may have missed things!

In June, we announced Yooka-Replaylee was coming! Our remastered/remixed version of Yooka-Laylee! The goal was to go back over the first game, as there was lots of very valid critiques and feedback, both internally and externally, and to try and make it the game we feel it should have been from the start! Having the lovely knock-on effect of setting our bigger teams up with even more knowledge and experience for future projects!

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Here's a list of just some of the things we're doing to make Yooka-Replaylee a more comprehensive experience:

  • Revised controls! Tweaks have been made to abilities to chain together, make everything feel tighter
  • A new camera! No more getting lost behind objects!
  • Obviously, shinier graphics! New character renders and stuff like improved world lighting, reactive snow, grass, water etc to make the worlds feel more alive
  • Revised Quill locations to aid better/more worthwhile exploration
  • An entirely new collectible coin to spend at Vendi, and elsewhere!
  • Other yet to be revealed collectibles!
  • New characters, such as Mark a bookmark who’ll help you warp around worlds, saving the need to constantly run around, and Coinelius, a ghostly piggy bank!
  • A world map and challenge tracker to aid exploration and completion
  • Always expanded levels
  • All moves unlocked from the start
  • New and revised challenges
  • New and improved minion/enemy variety
  • An orchestral soundtrack
  • Probably a bunch of other stuff I forget right now or we haven’t announced just yet!

We've also held two Q&A/interview style videos, both of which can be found below! We'll have more videos with devs coming soon, too!

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

We then also confirmed that Yooka-Replaylee will be coming to PS5, Xbox Series consoles and... Nintendo!

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

This trailer teased some more gameplay footage, while we also confirmed that Steam owners of Yooka-Laylee with get a discount for Replaylee, as well as confirming that we're working to ensure we can offer the same to console owners when we announced the console versions!

In October, we brought the game to EGX for the public to play an early demo of Glitterglaze Glacier! You can watch a side-by-side comparison of new and old below!

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Things have already moved on quite far since this demo in a short amount of time! We've heard some of your feedback about things like the text boxes, and lighting on this level, and we're exploring options around those topics, so stay tuned!

Speaking of the demo, I also sat down with Gavin Price, studio head and game director on Yooka-Replaylee to go into a little more detail about the changes we've already made since the demo, and teasers of some things we're still yet to show, take a look below!

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

That's about all we've got for you this year! We'll be back in the New Year with even more Yooka-Replaylee, more gameplay, more new features and some other exciting announcements!

Let me take this opportunity to thank the community for joining us on this ride, from Playtonic as a whole and myself personally, as the community guy. I joined in January 2024 to kickstart all of our outward communications again and it has been an absolute pleasure to get to know this dedicated fanbase more intimately, to share our vision for the future with you, and to just goof around on social media. Many gaming communities are dedicated, but you folks have a passion for this lizard and bat that is often unrivalled!

Thank you again for your support

Yooka-Replaylee Demo Developer Commentary!

Hello fine people, platformer enjoyers and dare I say it... friends?

I come with glad tidings and a new video for you! I (Steve, hello!) sat down with Gavin Price, Supreme Glorious Leader Game Director on Yooka-Replaylee for a bit of a chin-wag about the game, the progress we're making and some of the key differences both IN this demo that we shared with media and also some of the changes that have happened SINCE this demo was first shown!

Get this in yer eye holes:

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Some of the topics covered while I fumble around with a controller, trying to listen to my boss...

- Coinelius' coins' new colour — Coinelius, the helpful piggy bank and new character edition to Yooka-Replaylee has already undergone a change with his beautiful platinum coins having stolen the golden hues of the Quill because...

- Level-specific Quills — Having given up their golden coat to Coinelius' coins, Quills now come in a variety of colours as they become specific to the level the player is currently in. Why is this? Because our crafty salesman Trowzer has gotten pickier over the years.

-Trowzer's new wares — The role of Trowzer is fundamentally changing in Yooka-Replaylee with a whole new set of wares to sell. What these wares are we are not ready to reveal quite yet.

- All moves from the beginning — In one of the bigger changes to the game, and why the role of our beloved salesman has changed, is that players will have access to the full arsenal of Yooka and Laylee's moves from the start of the game.

- New Pagie pieces collectible — A new collectible has joined the roster in the form of Pagie pieces. Collecting these will unlock additional bonuses.

- Levels available in their "expanded" stage from the start — In another change to the original Yooka-Laylee, levels will now be available in their entirety from the very start.

We'll be showing off some new content in the New Year, as well as bringing you a wrap-up of what we've revealed so far since June in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for that!

Also worth mentioning, that YES, we're going to discount Yooka-Replaylee if you own Yooka-Laylee (On Steam, and working with the console platforms to ensure this too) and YES we are still listening to your feedback on what we reveal so far, I can't promise anything as we're all very busy bees but as the Community Manager, I'm seeing your comments and feeding back everything!

That's all for now, new friends, see you soon!
