Interview with Jordan Untereiner Technical Game Designer at TDF

How do you determine the ideal length of a race to keep players interested without it becoming too long or repetitive?

➡️ We have 2 types of race, Sprint and Endurance, respectively 7 and 14 laps, which both offer a different experience. Our aim is to create races that demand challenge and concentration, but that don't drag on, which is why the player has the option of speeding up time to focus on the key moments of a race. In terms of experience, we'd like a player to be able to complete a full season in just one evening.

What kind of variations (weather, etc.) do you envisage for the races, and how will these affect players' racing strategies?

Several events come into play to add diversity to the races, starting with the weather, which can vary during the races and impact on strategy. Accidents, too, are often unexpected and can upset the course of a race.

How do you integrate strategic elements (such as pit stops, tire management, fuel consumption) into the game to encourage players to make tactical decisions during races?

Each resource, such as tires, reliability and fuel, has an impact on the race that needs to be managed differently, depending on the circuit, the weather, but also events such as the Yellow Flag or the position of our car.

All these factors have been designed to ensure that vehicle micro-management plays a constant role, and demands constant attention from the player.

What approach do you use to balance the difficulty of the races as the player progresses through the game, to ensure a constant challenge while allowing for significant skill and vehicle upgrades?

Our aim is to keep things challenging as the player progresses, so that the AIs evolve at the same time as the player, as if they were other players. So they too upgrade their cars and invest in their buildings.

Gameplay Deep Dive #3 - Focus on the GT Races

As an emerging team manager, You need to know the particularities of each type of race.

There are two types of races:

➡️ GT races emphasize a balance between speed, endurance, and technical prowess, with drivers and teams employing strategic tactics to secure victory over the course of the race distance, which can vary from short sprints to endurance events lasting several hours.

Firstly, let's focus on endurance races

➡️ Endurance races, exemplified by events like the renowned 24 Hours of Le Mans, demand meticulous resource management over long distances. Teams must balance speed with the conservation of fuel, tires, and mechanics, testing drivers' physical and mental stamina. With races spanning several hours, endurance events require strategic planning and the endurance of multiple drivers.

How do the sprint races work?

➡️ In contrast, sprint races are fast-paced battles where every second counts. Drivers engage in intense duels, pushing their vehicles to the limit in a quest for position. Held over shorter distances, typically 30 minutes to an hour, sprint races prioritize raw speed and quick decision-making over strategic endurance.

In GT Manager, our goal is to provide you with races that capture the thrill of endurance racing while offering a management experience that is accessible.

Each race will strike the perfect balance between realism and enjoyment, ensuring they are both challenging and fun to manage.

➡️ Your race weekend begins with the qualifying session and you'll find yourself immersed in the world of strategic decision-making. Here, the groundwork laid in practice sessions becomes pivotal as you adjust your chassis, engine, and aero setups to maximize your cars' performance.

➡️ Carefully select your drivers for each session, recognizing that their unique skills can significantly impact the outcome of your race weekend.

➡️ Weather forecasts will play a crucial role in your decision-making process. If rain is predicted for the latter part of the race, the dilemma arises: stick with a dry setup or opt for a wet weather configuration at the start? It will be your call!

➡️ From the pit wall, it's essential to keep a keen eye on every detail of the race. This means not just tracking your competitors' speed and tactics, but also staying on top of crucial elements affecting your own team's performance.

➡️ Stay vigilant regarding tire wear and temperature, as they directly influence your race pace. Manage fuel levels with precision, and keep a close eye out for potential engine overheating issues by adjusting your driver's pace accordingly.

➡️ But it's not just about setting up your cars and managing your race; it's about the dynamic nature of the races themselves. Whether you're managing a 7-lap sprint or tackling the endurance of a 14-lap challenge, each race presents its own unique set of obstacles and opportunities.

➡️ From navigating through a sudden yellow flag to adjusting your strategy on the fly due to unpredictable weather changes, every moment demands your attention and strategic thinking.

Interview with Alexis Aksoy, Main Vehicle Artist at The Tiny Digital Factory

Can you tell us about the process you follow when modelling a vehicle in 3D, from conception to completion?

➡️ We contact vehicle manufacturers to obtain a selection of models. Either they offer us a range of their vehicles, or we choose and request specific models that we like and that will be appreciated by the players. Once we have signed a contract for one or more models, we have three options to start production : either the manufacturer provides us with a factory file of the model on which we can work without difficulty.
Or we find a model on the internet which will serve as a basis, also gathering a set of reference photos.
In very rare cases, we develop the model from scratch, which obviously takes more time to ensure fidelity to the original model.

What software and tools do you mainly use in your 3D vehicle modelling work, and why?

➡️ I favor Maya for modeling and Substance Painter with Photoshop for texturing, tools that I have mastered since my studies and on which I have acquired great expertise over time. Although other software offers advantages, Maya remains comprehensive and meets my needs. Current software tends to become more and more similar, thus losing specificity.

Can you tell us about a 3D vehicle modelling project you've worked on that particularly excited or challenged you?

➡️ The Bugatti Bolide was a challenge because initially we only had the model of the first publicly announced concept car, which then evolved into its final version. With only the 3D concept model and reference photos, I had to work rigorously to completely deconstruct and reconstruct the model to faithfully match the final version. And for the uninitiated, yes, there is a huge difference!

What artistic or technical skills do you consider to be the most important for success as a 3D vehicle artist?

➡️ I see a car in its entirety as a jewel of engineering where the sense of detail and observation plays an essential role. Just like jewelry, each charm and aesthetic is reflected through the smallest details, from the curves they evoke to their very history. Every element on a car, whether technical or purely aesthetic, is carefully placed for a specific reason.

How do you collaborate with other team members, such as designers, animators and programmers, to create consistent and immersive visual experiences?

➡️ We exchange frequently to ensure the overall consistency of the game, whether in the behavior of the vehicles in the race or in the graphic aspect of the menus. Despite our small team size, we meet regularly to be efficient and pragmatic in our work.
