Free Episode Creator and Steam Workshop support for Chroma Squad

The indie superhero TV show studio simulator is now more meta than ever!

Today, we announce the release of the free “Episode Editor” update for the Steam version of Chroma Squad on PC, Mac and Linux.

The "Episode Editor" free update to Chroma Squad allows players to create and share their custom Episodes using the Steam Workshop feature. The editor is very powerful, allowing for complex episodes including custom dialogue, cutscenes, battles and more. There is full Documentation available for the editor, as well as a video tutorial.

The game’s designer Mark Venturelli also included a brand new Chroma Squad episode called “Mark’s Wedding”, designed to slot right into the main campaign’s 4th Season. Fans can play the Episode and also use it as a guide for what’s possible with the new Editor.

Steam Workshop: Episode Editor BETA now available!

Hey everyone,

Today is a very exciting day! Remember when, way back in 2013, Chroma Squad almost reached our Kickstarter stretch goal for an Episode Editor?

Back then I was just a backer like you. A few months later, I was brought on board to help the Behold Studios team in making this dream come true! Slowly, throughout the years, we kept improving the game, surprised and motivated by how much love it got from you, our fans.

You never forgot about Chroma Squad, so neither did we! Last year we saw the “Director’s Cut” free update, with lots of much-requested features such as the New Game+ and controller support. And today we are officially releasing the Beta version of our Episode Editor!

What can you do?

With the Episode Editor you can create episodes as complex (or even more!) as the ones in the game. You can create your own stories, dialogue, fights, giant robot battles, surprising twists and “funny” puns. Oh boy, I wish we had this tool back in the day - it would have made development so much easier!

But it is here now, and it is yours. It is still rough around the edges, and we need your help to test it and to tell us what we can do to improve it.

The only major limitation is that you cannot add your own media such as sprites and sounds (yet!), and you also cannot add or manipulate special objects in the environment (such as the bombs from Season 5 or Monster Portals). Apart from that, the sky is the limit - you have access to all maps, bosses, enemies, characters, sound, music, and special effects from the official Chroma Squad campaign!

You can create adventures that slot in the regular campaign, or create stand-alone stories or even campaigns - it’s up to you!

How do I use it?

If you want to create episodes or simply play the creations of other people, you just need to follow these simple steps:

1. Go to your Steam client

2. Go to “Library” and find your Games list

3. Right-click your “Chroma Squad” installation

4. Select “Properties”

5. Click the “Betas” tab

6. On the “Select the beta you would like to opt into” drop-down menu, select “public-beta”

7. Click on “CLOSE” to close the Properties window

8. Wait for the download and play the game!

After launching the game, the Episode Editor BETA can be accessed from the Main Menu on the bottom-left corner of the screen.

Documentation & Tutorials

These are under development! We will share them with you as soon as they are done. In the meantime feel free to ask questions here in the comments, in the Steam Forums, or tweet directly to me @markventurelli or @beholdstudios.

Example Episode

I have created an example episode that I will reference on the tutorials. It is a fairly complex episode, and it demonstrates the power of the Editor. I also think it is pretty fun :) You can download it by visiting Chroma Squad’s Steam Workshop page and Subscribing to it.

I have feedback / I found a bug. What do I do?

Please report bugs directly to us using the in-game tool. Just click on the top-right corner of the screen. Or email us on [email protected].

For general feedback, you can use the comments below, the Steam Forums or any of Behold Studios' social network channels.

Go let your imagination run wild!

Thank you for your love and support throughout all of these years!

We can’t wait to see what you will create.

With love and imagination, anything is possible! Go, Chroma Squad!

First patch for "Director's Cut" version is live!

Hi everyone,

Thank you for all the love and support you've given us since we released the "Director's Cut" super-patch! Also, thanks for the patience - we know there are still bugs to be fixed, and we are working on it. We've seen your reports in our bug report system, as well as on the forums, reddit and even Twitter. Thank you for helping in making this game better! :)

Today we are addressing most of the things you've reported, but there's still work left to do.

Especially, I'd like to talk about two things.

1) If you are on Mac or Linux and have been having problems launching the game, we figured out why - it's actually a Steam patch problem related to us renaming the executable. That's why we were having it work for some people but not work for others.

**TO FIX THIS ISSUE**
- Go to your Library, and right-click "Chroma Squad";
- Select "Properties";
- Select the "Local Files" tab;
- Select the option "Browse Local Files";
- Now, on the game folder, right click "chromasquad";
- Select the "Get Info" option;
- Open the folder Contents\MacOS;
- Rename the file "mac2" to "chromasquad";

Please let us know if this solves the issue for you.

2) If you are experiencing a freeze on the final boss (please avoid spoilers and don't mention the name of the boss on the comments), we have fixed an issue on that fight, but we have failed to reproduce some of the cases that you have reported - we've played this fight over 20 times and it seems perfectly stable on our machines now.

Please let us know if the freeze still occurs for you. If it does, send us a report with your email through the in-game system. We might ask you for your save game file to try and catch this elusive issue.

That's it for today :)

Cheers,

~Mark

**Patch Notes**
Fixed an issue where multiple pop-ups would stack on top of each other;
Fixed an issue where changing resolution in-game would freeze the game;
Fixed an issue where NG++ Bosses had more health and damage than intended;
Fixed an issue with Cloud Saving on MacOS;
Fixed an issue with camera movement not working properly with the mouse;
Fixed an issue where the game would rarely crash when launching the last episode of Season 5;
Fixed an issue where some gamepad labels would show up when playing with the mouse;
Fixed an issue where the mouse cursor would disappear if you used a touch-screen-enabled PC;
Fixed an issue where some Achievements were not working on Steam;
Fixed an issue where the Chromatize button label would disappear after failing an episode;
Fixed an issue where the final boss would freeze on its second transformation;
Fixed an issue where trying to Resume a paused Mecha Fight would result in the game freezing;
Fixed an issue where the Options menu would not close on the Studio screen;
Fixed the "Save My Telly" and "Episodes Hero" achievements;
Fixed an issue where the game would rarely crash on the final Mecha Fight;
Fixed an issue where you could skip an episode in Season 5;
Fixed several other minor bugs;
