RLCS 2021-22 format, schedule, prize pool, regions, and more

Psyonix's reveal of the 2021-22 season of the RLCS couldn't have been more jam-packed with juicy information. As well as the usual - dates, prize pools, and so on - we also got news of some huge expansion into four new regions, plus the confirmation that the RLCS is returning to LAN.

The RLCS 2021-22 season will span from October 2021 all the way through to the end of June 2022, and along the way teams from a total of eight regions will compete for a share of an enormous total prize pool of $6 million. Of the eight regions, four of them are brand new to Rocket League esports, meaning we will have a truly global competition this time around.

The season will include four live events which will take place in various destinations around the globe. There will be three Majors - one at the end of each of the three splits - and a $2 million RLCS World Championship at the end of the season.

The RLCS returns this October with the RLCS 2021-22 season. Doing away with the numbered seasons, RLCS 2021-22 really looks to shakeup Rocket League esports with new regions, a bigger prize pool, and a return to LAN.

That return to LAN includes the prestigious RLCS World Championship, which will be returning as a fully international event that will crown a global champion. While we're a long way off finding out where it will take place, we do know when - the Championship will run for a total of ten days, starting July 22 and ending on July 31.

The RLCS Championship will be split into two, with a Wildcard tournament and the 16-team Main Event. Prior to the Championship, eight of the best Rocket League teams will have auto-qualified, but the remaining eight spots will be contested for in the Wildcard stage. Each region in the RLCS will receive a certain number of spots at Wildcard, and only the top eight will earn a place at the Main Event.

The Rocket League Championship Series will expand its list of eligible territories and regions for the RLCS 2021-22 season, bringing Rocket League esports to pretty much every corner of the globe.

Previously, only four main regions were represented in the RLCS: Europe, North America, South America, and Oceania. For RLCS 2021-22, three new regions are being added to the competition: APAC North, APAC South, and Middle East and Africa. These are all full-RLCS recognised regions that will compete at Majors and earn spots at the end of season Championship.

There is also a fourth Psyonix-supported region, Sub-Saharan Africa, which will not have teams attend Majors but will have the same three-split regional format as the seven main RLCS regions. Plus, Sub-Saharan Africa teams will have the chance to go to the Championship at the end of the season via the Wildcard event that precedes it.

Rocket League targets Sweden for RLCS' return to LAN events

Psyonix has revealed the details for the RLCS 2021-22 season, and there is plenty for Rocket League esports fans to sink their teeth into. Arguably the biggest bit of news to come from the announcement is that the RLCS 2021-22 season will see a return to live international events.

There will be four LAN events across the season - three Majors at the end of each split, and the RLCS World Championship. Psyonix has also confirmed that Stockholm, Sweden will be the location for the first of these events, the Fall Split Major. Unfortunately, there are no plans to have a live audience at this LAN event, but Psyonix says it is a possibility for the other events and that it will "reevaluate" this in 2022. The Fall Split Major will take place December 8-12.

In a press event, Cliff Shoemaker, director of esports at Psyonix, says that "there will be very stringent and strict COVID-19 rules and regulations" for those competing at the event, with player safety remaining the developer's number one priority for the return to LAN.
