Rocket League best cars explained

What do you get if you cross the fast-paced driving skills of a Fast and Furious film with football tactics worthy of Jürgen Klopp? The answer is one of the most exciting esports around: Rocket League.

Players loved the four-wheeled footie action, and the game's casual and competitive modes exploded in popularity upon its release. Five years on, there's still a strong core fanbase climbing the Rocket League ranks and representing teams at esports tournaments, but the game's recent free-to-play update is set to give the racing game a new lease of life.

Whether you're a rookie or a former Grand Champion, your choice of car says a lot about who you are as a player - but also affects your playstyle. If you thought all cars were created equal you'd be wrong, so we're here to help you understand what makes one car better than another, and ultimately which are the best Rocket League cars to choose.

The best PS4 games in 2020

The best PS4 games are like pizza toppings when you think about it - everyone thinks their choice is the correct one, but really it all comes down to a myriad of personal tastes and preferences that are different for each individual. And then there's always someone who puts pineapple on theirs. Their pizza, that is, not their PS4. Here at The Loadout, we love multiplayer action and excitement, so most of our picks reflect that. We're known for reporting on the biggest esports games, however, some alternative games broke the mould and had such an impact on us that we couldn't not include them.

Even though we're nearing the end of the iconic console's lifespan, we know that the PS5 will have backwards compatibility for its games, so questions surrounding the best PS4 games will continue deep into 2020 and beyond.

The PS4 has such a wide variety of games that there really is something for everyone, regardless of taste or preference. Maybe your favourite PS4 games don't match ours, or those of the biggest streamers, but at the end of the day, it doesn't matter as long as you're true to yourself.

Rocket League and Fortnite join forces for Llama-Rama crossover event

Rocket League's first in-game event after it goes free-to-play tomorrow will be Llama-Rama, a crossover with Epic Games' Fortnite. Starting September 26 at 22:00 PDT (06:00 BST on September 27) players can begin working through the challenges to unlock Fortnite-themed accessories.

Unlike previous events, all the items from the Llama-Rama event will be completely free. Each Event Challenge unlocks a different item that can be claimed from the Challenges Menu. Players that complete all the objectives will unlock the latest Rocket League car, the Battle Bus from Fortnite. A Psyonix developer on Reddit has confirmed that the Battle Bus will use the new Merc hitbox that was added to the game last Thursday.

Fortnite players will also unlock Rocket League-themed items by grinding through the Llama-Rama challenges. Rocket League players will have to remember to claim these items, whereas Fortnite players should receive them automatically. Those of you who have always wanted to represent Rocket League in Fortnite, you finally have the chance. You can get a glimpse of all the new items over on the Rocket League website.

Rocket League is getting a Fortnite crossover event

Now that Rocket League is landing on Epic Games' home platform, we're getting a crossover event to mark the occasion. There are things to do in Fortnite as DJ Slushii is doing a gig on the Party Royale stage, and Rocket League players are also getting some things to do to keep themselves busy.

First things first, DJ Slushii is closing out the Fortnite Presents: Spotlight series with a performance at Party Royale. Basically, if you've played Rocket League you'll recognise the track 'LUV U NEED U'. DJ Slushii's concert kicks off Saturday, September 26 at 14:00 PDT/ 17:00 EST/ 22: 00 BST. Don't fret if you miss it, though, as you can catch it later that day at 20:00 PDT/ 23:00 EST/ 04:00 BST, and the next day at 10:00 PDT/ 13:00 EST/ 18:00 BST.

As part of the crossover event, you can also get Fortnite-themed goodies in Rocket League if you complete Llama-Rama challenges. It's not a one-way thing, however, as you can head over to Fortnite to snag Rocket League-themed stuff as part of the same set of challenges. Plenty to keep you busy then.

Rocket League Season 1 includes new car, Rocket Pass, competitive tournaments

For a long time, Rocket League's free-to-play update was the worst-kept secret in gaming. However, now it's official, developer Psyonix is slowly teasing us with details of what to expect when the rebooted Season 1 drops next week.

If you've not played Rocket League before but are suddenly approaching it with a courteous side-eye because it's free on the Epic Games Store, imagine if you crossed Lewis Hamilton, Virgil van Dijk, and Simone Biles. Yes, it's front flipping, fender-bending, four-wheeled football action. And the rebooted Season 1 looks like a great time to join the fun.

Season 1 launches on September 23 in tandem with the free-to-play update, and the headline act is, as usual, the Rocket Pass. The premium version of the pass costs 1,000 Credits (about $9.99) and instantly unlocks a brand new car, the Harbinger. The new whip can be earned without spending your hard-earned cash, but you'll just have to complete challenges in order to level up your Rocket Pass. There's not a lot of info about the new car yet, so we'll wait and see if it makes it onto our Rocket League best cars tier list.
