Changes to Rocket League's Competitive Rank System for Better Matches

In specific cases, a player's rank for a certain Competitive playlist in Rocket League may be adjusted upwards to reflect the player’s actual skill.

Rocket League Competitive players,

We’re introducing an update to the Competitive rank system designed to increase match quality. Specifically, this change addresses “unintentional smurfing,” which is when a player is at a rank below their actual skill level simply because they haven’t played a specific playlist in a while.

Since the start of 2024, this change to the system has been tested on small groups of players across all Competitive Playlists. Because we’ve seen a significantly positive impact on match quality and player experience in these groups, we rolled out this change to all players earlier this week.

From now on, a player’s Competitive rank will be evaluated when they’re completing their placement matches, and may be adjusted upwards if the new system recognizes that their starting rank is too low. A player’s predicted rank is based on their rank in other Competitive Playlists. While building this feature, we analyzed skill transference between playlists, and found that a player’s rank can be predicted with high accuracy using their ranks from other playlists.

A rank change will only happen when all three of the following scenarios are true:
  • The player played at least ten matches of a certain Competitive Playlist in the previous Season. (This means the player is “fresh” in the playlist.)
  • In the previous Season, the player did NOT play the Competitive Playlist they’re currently queuing for. (This means the player is “stale” in the playlist.)
  • The player has a rank significantly below their predicted rank for the playlist they’re currently queuing for.
For example, consider a player who was Silver in both Doubles and Hoops two Seasons ago, and now is Diamond in Doubles but hasn’t played Hoops since. When they begin their placement matches for Hoops, their rank may be automatically adjusted upwards.

This change is one of several we mentioned earlier this year for improving gameplay. Have more questions? We’ll try to answer the ones we anticipate in the FAQ below!
COMPETITIVE RANK SYSTEM CHANGES - FAQ

Q: MY HIGHEST RANK IS DIAMOND III. DOES THIS MEAN YOU’LL ADJUST ME TO DIAMOND III IN ALL MY “STALE” PLAYLISTS?
A: Most likely not, as skill transference is not necessarily one-to-one between playlists. Playstyle differences between playlists are taken into consideration. In most cases, players would be placed within a few ranks of Diamond III, but all adjustments are made on a case-by-case basis.

Q: I HAVE MULTIPLE “FRESH” PLAYLIST RANKS. WHICH WILL YOU USE TO MAKE PREDICTIONS, THE HIGHEST ONE?
A: It depends on several factors. Ultimately, the playlist ranks that allow for the most confident prediction will be used.

Q: SO PLAYERS ARE BEING REWARDED WITH A HIGHER RANK WITHOUT HAVING TO WIN MATCHES?
A: In this case, the higher rank is a rank that’s fair for the player, their teammates, and their opponents. We believe it’s preferable to the alternative of players smurfing to win those matches (unintentionally or not). Also, the adjusted rank is determined from existing ranks, so adjusted players will generally not be “rewarded” with a rank they’ve never achieved before across all playlists.

Q: IF I’VE NEVER PLAYED A GIVEN PLAYLIST AT ALL, WILL IT BE CONSIDERED STALE?
A: Yes.

Q: WITH SNOW DAY AND DROPSHOT ALTERNATING EACH SEASON, WILL ALL PLAYERS’ RANKS BE CONSIDERED “STALE” FOR THESE PLAYLISTS WHEN THEY RETURN?
A: Yes, and we believe this will have a positive impact on these playlists, since players will likely be more evenly distributed skill-wise.

(As a reminder, just because a rank is “stale” does not always mean it’s going to be adjusted. The other two rank adjustment scenarios must occur.)

Q: WILL THIS CHANGE APPLY TO TOURNAMENT RANKS?
A: It will not, but we may consider this in the future.

Q: WILL RANKS ALSO BE ADJUSTED DOWNWARDS?
A: No, but we may consider it in the future.

Q: IS PERFORMANCE IN CASUAL PLAYLISTS TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT FOR COMPETITIVE PLAYLIST PLACEMENTS?
A: It is not, but we may consider this in the future.

Note:
Along with improving matchmaking quality for all players, we know server performance and DDOS match disruptions are top of mind for many of you. We're working towards the needed fixes for these DDOS disruptions, and we’re also mid-stream on changes to our server fleet.

We’ll share more on both of these when fixes and changes are complete. We appreciate the community’s patience while we work on these issues.

  • Volume for this new audio cue is tied to the Gameplay slider under Settings -> Audio.
  • Audio when you or a teammate demolishes an opponent is unchanged.
Timestamps in Chat
  • We’ve added timestamps to Text Chat and Quick Chats across all online and offline matches and modes.

    • Some mutators may be disabled depending on the game mode being modified.
Changes to Item Shop Bundles
  • We’re making changes to how we sell bundles in the Item Shop.
  • If you own items in a bundle that’s currently in the Item Shop, you can now buy the bundle minus the cost of the customization item(s) that you already have in your inventory.
    • If the bundle you’re purchasing is being sold at a discounted price, and you already own one or more items in the bundle, the full price of the owned items will be deducted until the minimum price for the bundle is met.
    • If you’ve already purchased all items in a bundle, all items will show as “owned” and the purchase button will be disabled.
  • All of the above applies to bundles sold for in-game Credits, and not to bundles sold for real-world currency.
SALTY SHORES GETS FESTIVE
Salty Shores is looking a little less… well, salty. The seaside view gets swapped out for stadium podiums and a skatepark as we lay down the turf and welcome the crowds for Salty Shores’ Salty Fest!

Of course, it wouldn’t be a festival without new music. Monstercat artists Mazare and Dead Pony blend a furious mix of EDM and punk rock in this Season’s theme song “Generation Gap.” Rocket League Radio also gets a revamp as Monstercat provides a fresh selection of rock-inspired tracks from Fairlane, Silverstein, Point North, and Story Untold, while Season 15’s Rocket Pass Premium includes two new Player Anthems!
INTRODUCING CHAT TIMESTAMPS
With the frenetic speed of Rocket League matches, it’s useful to look back at the chat and know who said what and when.

That “when” has been missing until Season 15! The addition of timestamps to sent chat messages should allow more tactical communication between players and reduce the likelihood of messages being misinterpreted. The timestamps will be based on how much time is left in the match. Finally, some important context for [3:00] What a save! [2:59] What a save! [2:58] What a save!
ROCKET PASS PREMIUM
Elder Emo? Indie Artist? Or just a punk with something to prove? Whatever side of the mosh pit you find yourself on, you’re sure to find something in tune with your preference in Season 15’s Rocket Pass Premium:

Jump into Nissan Fairlady Z or Nissan Fairlady Z RLE as you rock the pitch fairly and thoroughly. And whether you’re into thrash metal, doom metal, or tech metal, open up the pit with the Mosher Boost and Rock On Antenna!

Your biting lyrics now have an outlet with the SharpTongue Antenna. If your style speaks louder than words, put the Punk Boot Topper on your car. Either way, tighten your look (and then some… and then some more) with the Punked Wheels.

If these Premium rewards are hitting the right notes for you, the Power Chord Goal Explosion will be a beam of light! Crank the celebrations to 11 with the takeover Vol. 11 Goal Explosion that’ll make the pitch a punk scene.

All the rewards mentioned above are just some of the rewards you can unlock. There are 70+ Tiers of rewards across free and Premium, so keep on rockin’.
TOURNEY REWARDS HAVE NEVER LOOKED SO ENCHANTING
This Season’s Tournament Rewards are looking magical, but we swear they’re legit. Take a roll of the dice with the 1D20 Topper and Polyhedral Boost, leave your rivals enthralled with the Spellbound Goal Explosion, or play your cards right with the Jester Decal.
DEMOLITION AUDIO UPDATE
Fast cars, furious riffs, and frenetic boosts? Sounds like a blast. And speaking of blasts, you’ll notice changes to audio clarity for supersonic collisions. Demolition audio has been tweaked so it’s easier to detect whether it’s your teammates or opponents who have just gone up in smoke!
Ready to make some noise and win over the crowd? The festival that is Season 15 runs from June 5 to September 4!
